Actually the BBC initially had Russia likely to take Kyiv. Others didn't. And that's the major difference between "pro western propaganda" and "pro Russian propaganda". In the west we're exposed to far more different narratives and slants and we have the choice to pick and choose which one, or a mix of them, rightly or wrongly. In Mother Russia there's just the one narrative and other narratives get short shrift.
So Russia is protecting the Ukrainian population and at the same time protecting Europe.

Another contributary factor in the falling population figures is early deaths from alcohol. A miserable life leads to excessive alcohol consumption. Life may look bright and comfortable in the Cities, but go in the countryside. and its completely different story. On top of all this, the majority of Putins army in Ukraine was drawn from the republics,,,far from Moscow or Petersburg.......( can't have body bags coming back to the main cities, can we? ), But after 6 mth's, and the return of the survivors to the provinces, and telling everyone what's really going on, that supply of cannon fodder is rapidly drying up. So not that Putin gives a damn, the war is still becoming more problematic for him as time goes by.
