Im sure if Russia was in an a war of existential crisis it could summon and mobilise a million plus soldiers and many more millions in last ditch home defence like it did during world war 2 but we are a million miles from that( to keep the millions theme going). During the Vietnam war the Americans were deeply affected by the ominous draft to the point where they effectively gave up. It wasn’t an existential war for them either. Russia is in or near that situation now. No one from the more gentrified parts is rushing to the front and they won’t at any stage as long as Ukraine don’t threaten the homeland. This is the problem for Russia. The options for escalation are limited and potentially deadly for the regime. The thing is though Putin has tremendous patience he has played this game for 22 long years and is completely callous to any suffering he causes to anywhere and anyone but himself. He won’t budge one inch from his objective no matter how long it takes. As one commentator put it ,He is pragmatic and pliable about the means but extremely rigid about the outcome.

That is simply not the case. Any country being invaded by its larger neighbour in 2022 would be a huge international news story. This wasn't some minor border incursion, but a full scale invasion designed to topple the country being attacked.

I would assume like most the USA would over play the number of troops and alike to justify the defence spending. Seems to be what's happened in relation to combat effectiveness of the Russian army. You can't really justify spending that amount of cash if no one can oppose you.

Another contributary factor in the falling population figures is early deaths from alcohol. A miserable life leads to excessive alcohol consumption. Life may look bright and comfortable in the Cities, but go in the countryside. and its completely different story. On top of all this, the majority of Putins army in Ukraine was drawn from the republics,,,far from Moscow or Petersburg.......( can't have body bags coming back to the main cities, can we? ), But after 6 mth's, and the return of the survivors to the provinces, and telling everyone what's really going on, that supply of cannon fodder is rapidly drying up.
