I doubt very much it it was the plan to take over a Country the size of Ukraine with 200K troops & equipment in warfare. The plan was a surgical strike to take out the Ukrainian Government and replace it with a Russian one. You only have to hold the levers of power to have control ( and historically, this has happened in the past..without a shot being fired ) Putin firmly believed that most or at least a lot of Ukrainians would support his attempts to Russianize Ukraine. Big mistake. Again, he believed that after the Georgia fiasco, when he authorized massive amounts of money to modernize and upgrade the Russian military, that it has indeed been modernized, Unfortunately , he forgot to take into account the endemic corruption that exists throughout Russia. So it has been a disaster, and will continue to be a disaster. Taking a Country and holding it are two different things. Handing out Russian passports and compelling Ukrainians to use Roubles, and changing the signposts to Russian, will not make any part of Ukraine, and that includes Crimea, Russian, except in name. After the atrocities Russians have carried out, do you think that any Ukrainian,( or indeed any right thinking Country) will forgive never mind forget what they have done. And rightly so. They should have learned their lesson's after Afghanistan, when sandal clad tribesmen made life hell for the Russian Army, to the extent that they had to ignominiously depart, a beaten force. And now they are in the same situation all over again, except that this time some of the most powerful Country's on the planet are supporting Ukraine, and rightly so. Slava Ukraine.
