GCC getting called out again in the Journal by a local mum, for their inaction on the Salthill area where she cycles with kids on a regular basis
The comments start off sympathetic but the tone deteriorates quickly
Well, it is the Journal so par for the course
...
I live close to a councillor here in Kildare and dropped him a message a few days ago asking about the projects in the county funded in 2022 (see https://t.co/TWx2NnYtVi)
About €5m is allocated for our area and of these none have physically started with some still at design or pre-tender stages.
Even the Royal Canal greenway plan fell on its face.
I really think greenways should come out of tourism budgets rather than "active travel", unless a general use can be shown (eg commuter/ schools/ active travel for daily activities)
I agree. Greenways are nice but they don't help me get to the shops or my kids to school.
I get comments from neighbours like "aren't you good" or "getting your exercise?" No, I'm just getting around.
I do know a few people that would actively use the Waterford greenway to commute - some of them with round trips of over 40km and of these not all would I classify as dedicated cyclists.
So while I see your point, if they can encourage people out of their cars and onto bike, even if only through the "normalisation" of bikes, then go for it. At the end of the day, the money all comes from a big pot anyway and given the NIMBY driven reluctance of local authorities to spend on on decent local infra, I'd rather it spent on greenways than disappearing to reappear as a subsidy to property developers
My local greenway helps me get to the shops, and my kids to the pool in the next town. Just because the routes don't suit you personally doesn't mean they aren't used for utility cycling.
That's great. The proposed one near here (which seems to have died the death) would do very little compared to more footpaths in terms of getting people out of their car, and perhaps would've left people choosing a more direct route on road more vulnerable.
A local mum on the radio talking about the issues with cycling in Galway. Over the last 2 years she's been handing out leaflets, organising protests, writing and emailing the council executive, engineers and councillors. She's stated publicly she's not interested in running for a council seat and to be honest I'd say a lot of the local councilors are thankful
UK
Can you hear it?
UK continuing its decent into a big dark deep hole
it's a weird one. maybe i'm wrong, but i suspect this is intended to placate the party membership, which is famously more right wing than tory MPs; but by the same token, they'd be the sort of people shouting 'i can't even cycle to the shops anymore without the government needing me to have a licence!'
Nonsense article, guardian reporting on a claim by the Mail which was based solely on a few MP comments. It's not a thing, as AJR says, at best, it's a dog whistle getting rereported.
Newstalk picked up on that article in their breakfast show, regarding number plates and speeding.
Since the purpose of speed limits is to protect those impacted by vehicles and since the impact received is quantified by momentum (speed*mass) rather than by speed alone:
50km/h limit * 1,500kg car = 75,000 kgkm/h is momentum permitted for an average car in a 50km/h zone
equivalent speed for a 90kg bike + rider to achieve the same impact as a car travelling at 50km/h is 833 km/h.
I can't see why anyone could have any objection to the imposition of such a speed limit for cyclists tbh.
Somebody should maybe brush up on their basic physics. 🧐🤔
Bikes are not fitted with speed measurement devices as standard. Just to put the other legal point out there. It won't happen as you would have to retrofit any bicycle for road use with a speed measurement device that works directly eg GPS would not be acceptable.
These are just nonsense column fillers to get readers blood up.
I got shouted at yesterday by a motorcylist for riding two abreast. His number plate was deliberately obscured by the tax disc, and I'm pretty sure the Guards never pull anybody for that. So (a) he can go and shite, and (b) I'll know what to do when they bring in tax and number plates for cyclists.
Column fillers in theory, but you can be guaranteed that some will interpret this as a new law having been written into the statute books already.
Next up, a bridge to Scotland
Dublin City Council has said that there has been a 12% increase in pedestrian numbers and a 20% increase in people cycling on Capel Street since cars were removed from the street in May.
The news comes as groups against car-free Capel Street continue to put pressure on Councillors
“This public consultation period will remain open from today for a period of 4 weeks. Since the street was made traffic-free, there has been a 12% increase in pedestrian numbers and a 20% increase in cyclists.”

Daily Mail
Poll of 1,500 drivers by motoring campaign group FairFuelUK found 91% supported cyclists being forced to 'have road registration IDs'.
Another 70% backed them having insurance and 80% supported speeding penalties.
😄😃
The UK is on a path driven by a lunatic wing within conservative party that are currently in full control.
This path has lead them into an economic downturn along with the country's reputation in ribbons.
To survive they along with their media they create culture wars like
*immigrants taking your jobs
*The Irish
*Cyclist v motorists
Don't engage, just ignore and stop adding to Daily fcuking mail site traffic maybe
I think I've mentioned this before, but I lived in the UK for a year 20 years ago and cycled almost every day. I never had a single close pass or a driver pulling out in front of me or anything like that. It really was a pleasure to cycle there. I get the impression that the UK has become a terribly angry place in recent years. I hope we don't go the same way.
I think we're already there as well TBH 🙁
If we're not, we're not far behind.
If not, I shudder to think of what it's like there. UK Motorists don't run red lights like they do here...Yesterday, a cyclist on a mobile phone, who I over took on the right, then kicked my bike when he tried to pass on the left in front of a parked car and accused me of trying to cause hime to hit the parked car in a bus lane. I held my line bur he expectwd me to move out to let him pass on the inside. The guy was then awful aggressive riding along behiind and inside of me (but not able to pass) and ranting. Then over took on the right and tried to put me into parked cars but his bike handling was not up to the intent. He then ran a red light with cars passing left and right to prove the ass he was. The sad thing is, he will eventually have a car and behave the same way in that to cyclists.
