You get that cycling and 'traffic' (by which I presume you mean motor traffic) are interconnected, right?
I just think it's odd, that cycling, and cyclists, who make up such a small percentage of Galway traffic, floods this thread with a disproportionate number of re-occurring posts.
All I said was "Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a thread dedicated to improving Galway cycling infrastructure", but that seems to have upset some people. Suppose they'd be arguing in an echo chamber then, and not get the reactions that they are looking for.
Sure continue on. Personally, I just find the thread fairly useless now, as it provides little or no information relevant to me, or the majority of road users in the County
I do seem to remember a number of these traffic threads getting locked previously for going off topic, but maybe rules have changed since then
One can always unfollow a thread. On page 202 now, its a topical thread that is going strong for sure!
I will be keeping on eye on this as live locally to it, will post updates. It needs more access points for it to work for the whole community, but tarmacadam and lighting are at least a good start for Millar's Lane
And again, you do realise the connection between the small percentage of people who cycle in Galway, and Galway's overall traffic problems?
The more motorists who cycle , the less motor traffic there is.
Many of the posters here seem not to want more cycling - they want more motorcars.
More people cycling, and improved cycling infrastructure would be fantastic. That's why I was wondering if a dedicated thread would make sense. I see nothing but benefits for Galway by improving cycling infrastructure, but unfortunately it's not as simple as converting all roads into cycle lanes
I hope people are aware, cycling alone isn't feasible for the majority of people who live in Galway
Anywho, I've said my bit
If we make walking, cycling and public transport feasible for the majority, then we can sit back and watch some of that car traffic evaporate.
Galway City does well on the Walking when looking at the CSO stats - but we could do far better in the newer suburbs of the City
(The thread title should be changed at page no 203)
The cycling enthusiasts obviously want to have their say and let off steam, but this thread often gets bogged down in car vs bike arguments.
Since this forum is now for City and County, I think it makes more sense for a separate cycling thread as I don't see too many posts about cycling outside of the city itself.
There are far more pedestrians and public transport users than cyclists but the cycling fraternity have a far louder voice in this thread.
Maybe time for a new thread.
If we have a dedicated cycling forum, will it take years to get put in place and not end suddenly?
What posts do you see about driving or traffic outside of the city?
Most of the posts here are usually linking an article on something to do with improving PT or cycling or somesuch. WhatTraffic agreeing and then Laviski comes in upset that cars are being pushed to the side and then the usual back and forth starts for a page or so.
Outside of that there's the odd post where someone points out an accident, like the bike in the prom last week. That's about it. Anything else is fairly miniscule.
This forum is so much better without Biko's grubby paws all over every thread moderating the life out of it.
If someone wants to start a cycling thread then do it. If people use it then fair enough. If they don't then that's your answer.
I'd imagine anyone new reading this thread would just presume it's ALL about the car vs bike argument and won't bother posting anything in it all.
I no longer live in town but have an interest in the traffic there daily and in a broader long-term sense. I can't remember seeing any posts about traffic/ road issues outside the city. It's like this thread is invisible to rural car users because of the usual pattern of posting by some. It's a pity as I think there are probably some posters who would have interesting input, but can't be bothered with the bickering.
But sure what's stopping them posting. They're adults I assume, these people with a vested interest in traffic issues. It's not a closed forum. Plenty of discussion happens here. But you can't expect it to be pro car in the times we live in with the societal issues car traffic brings. If that puts people off posting then it's not really any loss?
Personally I don't think these people post because frankly they don't exist, not on boards anyway. The county forum was dead before the merge which showed how much interest there was out there.
Everyone is free to post about any traffic issues they like here, no topic is out of bounds really. But the discussion will usually be slightly more pro alternative methods of transport than the private car. It's not a good v evil thing, nobody needs to be getting offended. It's just the way of the world nowadays.
Don't get this car vs bike argument; this thread has always been way more mixed and diverse than that - but is mainly City based as posters in the main look to be based in the City. Traffic has many forms.
Do please. Works like this are important as is offers people an alternative to sitting in traffic
Decent piece on cycling this morning that went on for quite a while. Kevin Jennings was pretty good. No councillor brave enough to take part though...
Here's some interesting ones related to planning.
Planning permission for a leisure center in Loughrea was refused due to the “car and roads dominated” layout of the proposal.
In Ballinasloe, permission was refused for an estate as to grant planning would pose an intensified risk to the safety of pedestrians and other road users and lead to “unsustainable mobility patterns” in the immediate area.
Those were Galway County Council.
Galway City Council, on the other hand...
A submission by the National Transport Authority (NTA) – seeking to restrict new access points along the Western Distributor Road to ‘cyclists and pedestrians’ only – has been defeated at a City Council meeting.
Councillors voted 12-4 to reject the NTA submission presented in the draft Galway City Development Plan (2023-29) which sought to prevent new access points being provided for vehicular traffic.
The NTA in their submission said that their proposal was aimed at ‘protecting investment in public transport’ and in ‘facilitating sustainable travel’.
Bad accident on the M6
The two-car accident happened at Junction 14 Ballinasloe at approximately 11pm.
Both drivers, aged 30 years and early 70s, who were the sole occupants of their vehicles were taken from the scene to University Hospital Galway.
Ah lads...
been said loads of times, they ain't got the ....
rather hijack a thread to force across their views. Thread should be renamed.
202 page doesn't mean it was always based on cycling posts and their rants.
it did start of and continued for a long time about traffic with regards to motorized vehicles before it became bogged down with cyclist rants. When it did, we lost a good few contributors and more when the site upgrade was a disaster.
No permission needed - feel free to start a new thread for non-traffic related cycling discussions relating to the Galway City and County region.
Who knows, it might get a cycle shop or cycle workshop recommendation every so often.
Back on topic - does anywhere in Ireland scale up bus services to coastal areas during peak season? Salthill could do with much more frequent buses these days.
Council going against NTA interesting, hope the Council will not use it now as an excuse NOT to provide pedestrian and cycling access points on there own to and from the WDR. It would make it easier for residents to get to and from bus stops and local facilities if these were provided. Hawthorn Place and Gort Siar are good examples.
A local activist says it’s vital that we realise that making the streets of Galway safer is for the benefit of everyone – and not just cyclists.
Grainne is the organiser of the Sundays4Safety events, which is calling for action on some of the more dangerous locations in the city’s road network.
She became emotional as she described how her worries for her young son have driven her campaign.

how is traffic this evening?
Interesting, totally agree with her "Red Herring" call out.
Seemed fine where I was, my 4 minute bike commute remained unaffected.
Yeah she was spot on with that.
Also highlighted the farce regarding bollards going up to protect a section of double yellow road but then getting told no when asking for them on poorly designed bike lanes
The best part was straight after this segment, Galway Talks had the "Garda" slot! 😂
The Gardai have allowed illegal parking become the norm right around the corner from station at Coco in Salthill and they do nothing about it.
Maybe they will get embarrassed into doing some about it with segments like this on the local station and in the national Papers.
