I have become more and more convinced over the years that we need Hate Crime laws in this country - It's very disturbing to read about recent homophobic violent incidences, to see that reported transphobic hate crime has doubled in Northern Ireland but often go unreported here in Ireland. Even though we have no official Irish laws on hate crime - there was an 80% rise of reports on the unofficial hate crime reports in 2021.

All very worrying
Glad it was highlighted in court that this was a hate crime
The man charged with the two murders in Sligo has been charged with the attempted murder of a third man. He received a serious eye injury when attacked by the same perpetrator around the time two other men were murdered.

Great to have a big crowd at this event today. Very moving.
I dont get what your point is.
You'll need a hell of a lot more to impact this kind of behaviour than altering sex education classes.
And I totally don't get the argument. The same people talk about homophobic and transphobic bullying at school, so the kids know full well of the existence of people with those characteristics without lessons about them at all.
These are the kinds of lessons that are needed in primary school imo.
Oh I don't think it is THE answer - It is a part of it.
You'll need a hell of a lot more to impact this kind of behaviour than altering sex education classes. This isn't something that can be solved with idealistic Twitter LGBT ideologies. A heavy hand is needed as they're running amok.
Yes, this attack was aimed at these guys because they were homosexual. But many of these attacks are because a person is seen as 'different' and is targetted for such. The scrotes didn't go out looking for someone gay, they just love bullying anyone who looks at all different to them.
If it had been some long haired young emo kids or metal heads the same thing would have happened. Or a black kid. Or an Asian kid. Or some tourists. The **** are just out to cause trouble.
Hopefully the promised changes on sex education in schools come in soon - I think that could help to begin a cultural shift in attitudes.
Online far right cultures of course add to a lot of hate speech which can in turn promote a culture where hate crime happens more.
There seems to me, going by the number of reports in recent years, of an ever increasing number of thuggish assaults in Dublin city, including murder. These crimes are no doubt perpetrated by the lower social classes on the whole.
Given the account given by the victim, I have no doubt that this was an attack motivated by homophobia. But I have to ask again, why didn't either the Guards or the victim give a description of the assailant/s. Don't they want to catch them? Especially odd of the victim who went into great detail of the attach never once offered a description of the assailant. So either he was advised not to, or he did and the press chose not to report it.
If the powers that be don't get a grip on policing there's going to be a lot more homophobic attacks and general attacks as well.
Actually I don't think the problem can be fixed by policing, it's state policy on the perpetually unemployed that is at the root of the problem, i.e the lower social classes who are running amok all over Dublin city with impunity.
Horrifying to hear another Dublin incident
Very worrying news from UK
What suggests that this was a hate crime?
Another attack verified by Gardai 😢
clearly a crime is not a crime. otherwise we wouldn't have different penalties for different crimes. Assaults and murders prompted by hatred should be treated more severely than crime that are not.
So? A crime is a crime, no?
Instead of Hate Crime how about Super Crime? Or Super Duper Crime? Surely you'll get the folks on board with such linguistics
Motive though is the amplifying factor, eg racism, homophobia
Isn't murder and assault already a crime?
Mod - Off topic posts have been deleted, keep the discussion on topic please which is hate crimes against LGBT people in Ireland
It seems like you have a weird agenda consisting of denying hate crime against LGBT people, if it did happen blaming it all on immigrants and muslims and then deciding even though you dont live in the country to appoint yourself as a spokesperson for gay people in Ieland. Noted that you dont seem to acknowledge LBT seem to exist.
Gay people are not living 'in fear of their lives' in Ireland as stated in GCN.
Oh and btw, stop deleting my posts in this forum.
Their phone number and email address is on their website
Let us know how you get on
I'm afraid that statement is not good enough.
How on earth are we to believe reports from them of homophobic attacks in future.
They have to explain in detail how this happened, otherwise they are not credible.
I'm not going to express any sympathy for something I don't even know occurred.
Yes, looks like someone jumped the gun in reporting before verifying, here's GCN's statement.
Has this been retracted?
Sounds to me like you care more about the perpetrators skin colour and religion than the victim
No physical description of the perpetrators? Said in the article it was 'a man and a woman'.Why nothing more descriptive than that? Surely we need a photofit of these scumbags?
It seems LGBT equality is going backwards in Ireland

No thoughts, sympathy, empathy at all with the victims more thinking that theres an angle on who the perpetrator is.
