Some small but potent storms kicking off around the country. Worth a separate thread as this risk for big thunder and big lightning is there until tomorrow night at least. All parts at risk this evening but east and south main focus tomorrow.
Yes I remember that one. We had the streamers forming over the Irish Sea and being blown ashore. We had thunder rumbling on and off for 2-3 days and lots of rain and hail.
Mea culpa. Damn predictive texting. Sod's law and all that.
Fabulous lightning in Cahore, Co Wexford from 11.30pm onwards. Until my sons decided to pull the blinds and put the light on for chats!! They don't share my love of storms! Thunder rumbled on for ages though and heard it again this morning. Downpours were amazing too.
I was working in Dublin. It was an incredible 48 hours. Non stop thunder and lightning for the entire period. It was so dark during the day that the streetlight sensors switched the lights on. Hailstones also. The forks of lightning were spectacular.
Some sparks showing up now (on Blitzortung) around Cork City/Ballincollig?
More than a day, two or three days I remember.
What a month that October was for ‘looking up’.
At the end of there were stunning Aurora displays.

Rumbles of thunder over Cahir, S. Tipp just now.
A very intense little cell seems to have popped up in south east Dublin city, dare I say it, around the Mount Merrion area!
Looks like it? Knowing that area, would love to have experienced that storm! 1963 I think?
More cells firing up over Dublin city. This thread might get VERY busy shortly, if I haven't just jinxed everything!
Downpour in Temple Bar:
Note: Not my photos (...I tried and failed miserably!). Credit to Vlad Bodarev (on Greystones Open Forum).
Some photos from last nights storm in Greystones.
In Ballincollig, can confirm. Lightning Tracker shows the same and I could hear some faint rumbling to the northwest. Started just after I got back from lunch, there was a bit of light rain just before the rumbling started.
It's not too warm today, at 24.1°C, but it's still very humid and muggy, and the occasional light gust of wind is not really doing anything to ease that situation.
The cell seems to be moving north, towards Limerick. Let's see what the rest of the day brings...
Recent lightning showing up on the radar over cork and limerick.
Lashing in Templeogue, Dublin. I thought I heard faint thunder a moment ago.
Wouldn't be surprised to get a spark or two soon from those cells over Dublin. Can see (very tall) cloud tops to them from here in Greystones.
A great looking cell popping up looking in a longford direction from athlone. Hopefully it sparks
Torrential rain across parts of north Dublin city now, will reach the coast soon. Flash flooding likely in places.
9.6mm reported at Dublin AP at 1300. Sure it will end up a lot more with that slow moving shower.
My girlfriend is in work in Dublin 2 and said there was some thunder in the last few minutes! Nothing here in D18, bone dry!
... but don't put those that get it on a pedal stool 😉
N Cork storm really popping
Just to keep on record. A couple of model maps from last night:
UK Met surface analysis at midnight. Cold front approaching from the NW.
GFS midnight analysis 850 hPa map:
And theta e: Surprisingly unimpressive:
and 500 hPa flow:
and 850 hPa flow:
If you compare all those maps, you'll see that wind flow in the lower, middle and upper atmospheres were all over the gaff.
Some nice cells developing over south tipp & kilkenny
Seems to already be having an effect down here in Ballincollig. Cloud formation to the south of me has effectively died off, latest forecast updates have slashed the rainfall forecasts for this afternoon by over 50%. Looks like we're in for another disappointment down here.
Waiting here in Limerick City.
I’m expecting big things come 3pm!
Yes, thunder hear for last 10 mins and rain
Getting ready for a round two in South Tipp, rumbling and rumbling
Same in West cork, can see plenty of high clouds to the north of me, but we are currently sitting out in the sun and it's about 23/24 degrees, very humid but lovely. If we can't get thunder, I'll take sun and heat! In fact, my weather app has removed any trace of thunder or rain until 2am and has replaced with sun/cloud
