From looking at some of the media coverage over the last week or so, the biggest problem immediately facing FFG is that of student accommodation rather than the Budget. There has been a few pieces about students not being able to obtain accommodation for the new academic year due to some student accommodation being used to house Ukranian refugees and the competition for rental properties is also quite intense. The problem for FFG is that the student accomodation issue is going to affect FFG supporters as well as those of other parties and it may be the straw that breaks the camel's back for a lot of FFG's soft vote. FFG has not been competent on the Housing issue so will it be able to do anything about sorting out the student accommodation issue?
Regards...jmcc
I think housing is an annoyance for them but they refuse to change policies. Thats not incompetence, its willful neglect and favouring private business over the Irish public. The student thing was stupidity though. They really don't plan ahead.
The quote from "All The President's Men" springs to mind. "The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand."
The student accommodation issue, if it is not dealt with quickly, is going to kill FFG in the polls and could even create problems with getting enough votes to pass the Budget.
There are two demographics affected by this particular crisis: students and their parents. The students are going to be even more angry with FFG and will probably not, as a group, vote FFG. The second group is far more interesting because that's where a lot of FFG's support lies and if FFG loses support there, SF could break 40% in the next few opinion polls. That would put SF on the road to a possible majority government in the next GE.
The impact on rural FFG families will be greater than on urban FFG families. They may reconsider voting for their local FFG TDs because this is a problem that directly affects them and their children. If FF and FG lose rural votes and those votes shift to SF then this will be a once in a century kind of upheaval for the electorate.
Hey let's screw the tax payer more. That will work for FFG. I guess they are trying to appeal to SF voters.
It sounds more like a government effort to provide more support to people who are finding all of the energy price changes a huge challenge. It's not a surprise and it's been flagged since the €200 electricity handout earlier in the year. This is more focused and a better approach.
Or they could do some creative accounting. Introduce the windfall tax on the Energy sector. Pass that on to joe taxpayer via payment like last time. This would have a double benefit. The companies get their money back You and I get bills reduced. Said companies then don't need to pass on the tax. Or is that to mad an idea. Gov pays nothing effectively.
Morning all. @jmcc the student accommodation issue is getting a lot of coverage this morning, particularly on Twitter. I'm surprised FFGG didn't see this coming, Simon Harris in particular getting a lot of flack, I'd not be surprised if he calls for a return to online /distance learning to ease the pressure 😉
It gets a lot of coverage every year at this time, especially by the SUI.
I do agree but this year particularly so for a number of additional complications. I can of course appreciate these complications, just really surprised the Government didn't see this coming 🤔 and now scrambling with no obvious or immediate solutions evident.
Yep. It is not like FFG were unaware of the problem but they don't seem to think things through. This problem is worse than the cost of living and fuel increases because it is not one that can be solved simply by thowing money at it. It is also directly affecting voters who may previously have voted FFG. Wouldn't be surprised to see an attempt to postpone reopenings too.
FFG decided to take 50K or so Ukranian refugees and some were accommodated in student accommodation. This was in the middle of a Housing crisis with homelessness reaching new peaks almost every month. There was a serious lack of planning by FFG. The lack of rental accommodation and student accommodation has been amplified by FFG's incompetence.
It was expedient use of a temporary accommodation resource. Lack of housing and rentals is primarily a building issue plus the accelerated exit of small landlords from the market. They can be blamed to an extent for the public side and the overuse of the private sector to house people but that is also a massive council failing.
It was all so, so predictable. I see the 30% tax band proposal also faltering 🤔 FF have been very quite on this & now the Greens unhappy. Tax experts almost immediately debunked the idea as being inequitable, then Leo agrees, it's all very perplexing.
The voters will see it like this: FFG screwed up.
If people keep repeating it, they will. It's all on one big bet on housing, a better scenario for government and a hope of no change for the rest.
The majority of the electorate are working tax payers. FF and FG are losing support. The idea that its all people on welfare looking for a raise is nonsense. Working people are sick and tired of getting rode while services decline and housing becomes a dream.
It was half a great idea. It was poorly planned. Like everything its short term thinking and then delayed reaction to the inevitable.
Now they are back to begging people to take in a Ukrainian or Ukrainian family to spare rooms
Great plan
Taking those numbers of refugees in the middle of a housing crisis was always going to have ramifications somewhere; there's no pain-free way out doing it regradless of how much advance planning the government did...
So you think "FFG" are responsible for planning the Russian invasion of Ukraine or you think we should have planned to ignore the plight of Ukrainian refugees? Really not sure what plan you are on?
FF and FG are responsible for offering Ukranians the most benefits compared to every other country (and alot more than the majority of irish people receive) which has resulted in more of them arriving here.
They are also responsible for the lack of accommodation which awaits these arrivals (which is getting worse by the month)
At least the ones in tents can spend the 208 on extra blankets etc to keep warm/dry once the weather gets bad (or will the taxpayer be paying for them extras too?)
FFG have screwed up and no amount of deflection is going to change that. This is what happens when politicians make policies without considering reality .It is not the fault of the Ukranians. It is all down those wonderful people in FFG.
There's no reason to think SF in government would have made a less generous offer, given their previous record on refugees
Yes but the Shinners is the response to Govt failures
Pathetic and Predicable
It's one policy the whole Dail agrees on, even if some individual TDs might mutter other things privately. In that respect a SF government response would be identical to what we see.
What has that got to do with this Govts failure in planning where to put these refugees especially the ones they knew for months needed moving on for students?
If you want to discuss SF policies do so on the SF thread and stop deflecting
The fact that the numbers would be just as large and they'd face a similar challenge.
So you know that SF or another Govt wouldnt have had a better plan than put Ukrainians in student accommodation and then a few weeks before the college term are begging citizens to let Ukranians stay in their spare rooms as they have no plan to house the ones in student accommodation
Wheres these modular houses we were told about?
Again this is a Govt thread, not an what might have/will/did the opposition do
100% correct.
You can certainly make the case that an SF-led government would be managing accommodation for refugees more competently than the current government, given Eoin O'Broin supposed oracle status on these matters.
What I don't think you can reasonably argue is that SF would be making a less generous offer overall to the Ukranians, given their record on refugees, as you seemed to be implying here
