Some small but potent storms kicking off around the country. Worth a separate thread as this risk for big thunder and big lightning is there until tomorrow night at least. All parts at risk this evening but east and south main focus tomorrow.
Was thinking I'd missed it because the crappy boards post clock says your posts were an hour ago. Finally remembered a post about that boards glitch and got up and opened the Velux to look out and sure enough. Lots of regular huge inter cloud lightning from that cell to the South East of Bray/Greystones. Not much rain in Bray though. Nothing torrential yet anyway.
Its great that its mostly intercloud because it means I an enjoy it without being paranoid that I'm going to get hit in my attic master bedroom. LOL.
North Kildare Meath border and nothing happening. Pics are CLASS though, keep em coming!
Yes. Looks to be moving out to sea in Greystones and intensity reducing. Seems to be mainly inter cloud.
You guys on the east coast are getting what i got this evening, was brilliant, stay safe recording because there was plenty of fork lightning and have phones charged just incase power goes, i should have done that but didn't
You and me both! The last time I experienced this level of thunderstorm activity was in Virginia in America.
It looks like the lightning is moving further out to see as it approaches Dublin. If it's the case, there may be nothing inland.
I'm loving it, got a ten min video of it too! What a night
My god. Never seen the like of the lightning in Greystones. Near constant flashes for the past 10-15 minutes!
Fantastic ! I can only imagine how loud the thunder was
Cheers. Been a lurker for a while. Had to show off my photos 😂. Taken with a Samsung S22 Ultra.
Tonight proving that it’s extremely difficult to get an inland night time storm. Albeit the one in Meath
Just endless flashes out at sea. Thunder died down a bit in Wicklow town but the light show is something to behold.
An excellent first post! Welcome aboard @Cretin.
Flashes every 10 seconds and constant thunder south of Greystones.
Got a mad notion to head to Clare this evening and video'd that flight from Warsaw pull out of landing in Shannon!!!
Mega! Incoming to Greystones now.
Just spent the last hour watching the lightning out of my bedroom window here in Limerick.
Ahh, thought i caught something from the corner of my eye. Galway city east, elevated
Flash in dublin i see on the radar
Quiet here 4 miles east of Athenry, but fresh flash above kilcolgan just now. Didn't hear the thunder so its some distance away.
Good job I didn't go to bed!
Met.ie update for the south Dublin coast. Started to rain, camera packed, wish me luck!
Some decent fork lightning over tramore bay now in the Wexford direction, serious lightshow
Was sheet lightning north of Navan earlier. Couldn't hear any thunder. Moved off towards an East direction. Tried to rain but stopped as soon as started.
What's in store tomorrow for Meath.
Not a fan of the trajectory tbh for Dublin. Watched plenty of storms be obliterated by the Wicklow Mts over the years. But I'll give it another little while as it looks like the M50 is finally being penetrated by rain now so maybe the shadow is shifting a little. At worst, it'll be looking south for a distant show.
Some brilliant pictures and videos coming in. Enjoy all!
We've seen convergence like that before from the southwest and southeast - a sort of neat trick to overcome our often unfortunate geographical position in a direct southerly. Big ask tonight but hope springs eternal.
It does look promising again now M.T. Hopefully, it can top over the Wicklow mountains, hit the concrete air of Dublin, the sea air and kick off, even a bit further...
Thanks as always for the update! Very much appreciated 🙏
Also in wicklow town, rain starting to come down. Constant flashes north and east of us over the sea. Is epic.
the younger folk in my house have taken some amazing videos so will post them at some point.
Sorry off topic, Thanks MT your a legend, love your daily forecasts
Went biblical here near Rathdrum for a bit. Huge forks across the sky right overhead with torrential rain. Eased a bit now but sky is flashing non stop. It's mainly to my east/south east at the minute and heading north but no sign of it to abate here yet
Would now say looks promising for Bray, Greystones area (about 0130-0145) and possibly Dun Laoghaire (0145-0200), rest of Dublin might have to accept the light show from that trajectory, or maybe the cells will spread and join remnants of inland convection. Coastal cells look intense enough to remain thunderstorms most of the night now.
We were out the other night star watching in nearby hilly area, and could see frequent lightning from cells 50 miles away to our northwest, that was epic even though it was so far away we heard no thunder from it at all.
