Why would Russia shell a power plant that they occupy 100%?
The line of conflict is nowhere near the plant either
This is proper 'reds-under-the-bed' stuff.
Amnesty holding both sides to the same standard is actually Russia pushing Amnesty to make Ukraine look bad - but yet Amnesty are still calling out Russia and have been banned from the country. 🤔 Sounds more like a delusion on your part
There's a threshold for every scenario, been lots of time for NATO allies to consider and work out plans. As long as the conflict is limited to 'conventional means' I think you're right, just be indirect assistance. Any sort of nuclear escalation though would surely be a threshold for greater intervention. Or possibly some devastating chemical or biological attack. Surely the Russian military know what these boundaries are as well and how far they can push it.
Jesus, nearly half a year into this nightmare and still entertaining fantasies that NATO will launch a full scale attack on Russian forces? Wake up, it's not going to happen no matter what, the assistance will remain indirect but effective, as it is now.
Should just send in the Turks. Remember WW3 over them shooting a Russian jet down.
if it happens that the powerplant takes a direct destructive hit from the Russian's, then all restrictions regarding retaliation should be off the table, including massive strikes against all Russians on the territory of Ukraine by NATO, and that includes Crimea.
I’m leaning towards a low level partisan attack that got real lucky.
On RTE radio 1, a guest nuclear expert said there is unlikely to be a Chernobyl type accident as the Ukraine plant uses different fuel types. He did say local rivers and some kilometres around the plant could be badly damaged - and because it’s a deliberate military attack on a nuclear plant he cannot definitively say it wouldn’t be worse than that.
But, it does seem like Russia could somewhat safely terrorise the world by attacking the plant with little risk to Moscow.
Why do you childishly try to put down the president of Ukraine? The tweet didn’t mention his former occupation yet you do in an attempt to belittle him.
Comedian calls for a strict and immediate international response to the Russian bombing of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant
"I hope so" really, I mean really 🤣
Ukraine is getting the best live intel from the thirstiest enemy of Russia in the USA. I can't wait until it's safe enough for them to tell their stories of how they watched inept Russians line up targets in nice clumps for the sacrifice. It must be driving them insane having to watch all those targets get passed by because they can't intervene. I can only imagine the shock and awe if NATO decided to attack the targets at once. Russia would be blown back to the 1700s.
I hope so. Here's an article on it - How Did Ukraine Destroy So Many Russian Aircraft At That Crimean Airbase? (forbes.com)
There is no doubt it was an attack and a brilliant one at that.
It’s not the likes of me who should be worried and can put up with brownouts or blackouts or lack of heat.
It’s the elderly there should be concern for.
A week or two of low to negative wind output from wind farms.
Winter 2021 it happened for two weeks and spring 2022 same.

Well I considered the other forms of attack first. I'm just thinking out loud here. The two big explosions don't seem to be from a strike. They seem to be secondary explosions - two fuel trucks exploding simultaneously? Hard to know. I would not argue either theory too vigorously 'cos I don't know either way.
@odyssey06: "Ukraine has been notably reluctant to formally claim responsibility in public, though officials are doing so in private." Interesting point.
Surprisingly good article on the state of the Russian economy in the Daily Mail. One thing is clear - the Kremlin are lying on an industrial scale and nothing that they say, nor any figures that they give can be taken at face value.
Why would you even consider an accident before any other forms of attacks? When a large military base situated in or close by a war zone blows up the most likely explanation is an enemy attack.
From the Guardian:
Ukraine has been notably reluctant to formally claim responsibility in public, though officials are doing so in private. That suggests Kyiv wants to preserve some ambiguity about how the attack took place, not least because it will hope to repeat the success again...
The most likely scenario is that the dumps were struck from relatively short range, possibly with a kamikaze drone, in a daring raid by special forces or partisans. The use of long-range missiles has not been ruled out, as the airbase is theoretically in reach of Neptune missiles fired from Odesa, 165 miles away, but those studying the explosion videos have found little evidence to support this.

Yes but at the end of the first paragraph he says "(And contrary to the title, I obviously don’t know for sure)" so he makes light of the title citing cigarette butts. I'm beginning to subscribe to the on-site accident theory. The Uks. have not said it was their operation. Surely if it was they would say so if only to demonstrate to the west that they can win. Also it would be a great morale boost to their troops. But they are not forthcoming. Much as I would like it to be a Ukrainian attack I don't see how they could do it. Unless it was a small attack (suicide drone?) that had the bonus of secondary explosions that blew the whole place up.
Sounds like we should all be chipping in and sending free cigarettes and matches to the gloriously uncareful Russian soldiers ...
He's not joking though
Let’s start with the simplest possible explanation. The Russians had a fuel spill in that area and a cigarette butt set it on fire. I’ve worked loading and unloading 767 cargo planes. I was present when a K-loader (used to load the planes) went over a raised part of the tarmac which tore a hole in the bottom of the loader. The fuel came out fast and spread fast. It is not easy or quick to clean up a fuel spill. We cleaned it by laying down material to absorb it, then sweep that up. Had an ignition source been present, we would have been in trouble. Particularly with a 767 overhead. And this was a really small spill. If an actually fuel truck has a serious spill it would be far more dangerous. I personally feel this is the simplest and most likely cause. Related scenarios would be a grass fire, old leaky oil drums or a mishap loading a munition onto a plane.
He is joking about the cigarette butt. The base was already on fire before those two explosions so they could have been secondary explosions. But what caused the initial fire?
Buy a few extra fleeces for the household to stick on at home this winter. Fingerless gloves are good too for typing. And a caipín to keep the noggin warm. No problem.
But a cigarette butt, well, that's something else entirely.
Any further news on this? I see elsewhere talk of an accident from Belarus authorities.
Interesting analysis of the Crimea attack. (Concerning the simultaneous explosions of the 'fuel trucks' - that could have been caused by ammo exploding near both trucks and setting them off simultaneously)

A windless week. What's that then?
