It would be absolutely hilarious if Truss lost. Just about the whole cabinet has backed her now, so she wins and things go on as before, only more extreme, if Sunak wins, a new cabinet and somewhat of a reset.
Truss was terrible under moderately difficult questioning by Kay Burley. Really poor.
Sunak performed reasonably by comparison. There may have been an element of throwing caution to the wind when holding a losing hand, but tried a few new things - standing up for all of the audience interaction, bouncing about, bundle of energy, instant answering of questions.
There was a vote at the end. Kay Burley made a mess of asking the question - veering between 'who were you more impressed by?' then changing it to 'who are you likely to vote for?', clearly two separate things. Then the push button technology failed and it went to a show of hands, so all very unsatisfactory. But it was clearly around 75% in favour of Sunak. And these are Conservative party members.
It has had little or no impact on the betting markets though. Minor dial change at best, there was 8/1,9/1 Sunak available at tea-time and the best is now 7/1 But that's small beer.

Sunak is clearly intelligent and a very capable politician (by Conservative standards).
I'm fascinated by the idea of Truss as PM. She's clearly a walking car crash - not quite at Nadine Dorries levels admittedly, but pretty bad all the same. But Tory standards have fallen so low that I'm not sure people will even notice how weak she is.
yeah I was aware of it, though there is more to Truss' affair than what is in the public domain but I cant post it here. I was more interested in the info coming out of the Foreign Office, vast majority who work there would be Labour voting Londoners so you can only imagine how sick they are of dealing with Brexit, they are exhausted after years of implementing policy that they hate and voted against.
Another little tidbit I found out was during the height of the pandemic lockdowns the Home Office had a plan involving the army drawn up to shut down the motorways of the UK to stop people travelling. My mate told me it hadnt yet been decided whether or not it was going to be implemented but regardless of their intentions then the Domnic Cumming/Barnard Castle scandal happened and becasue Boris backed him instead of sacking him any notion of the plan was shelved. Officials in the Home Office felt it would never get public buy-in becasue Cummings was let off the hook. Boris would have been aware of all this at the time, him backing Cummings took an option to prevent the spread of the virus off the table.
Wow.

The President of Rwanda Paul Kagame is a big Arsenal fan and he splurged £40m of public money to sponsor the sleeve of their shirt with the Visit Rwanda logo. Arsenal taking his money caused controversy at the time as the Rwandan economy was in trouble. He also regularly uses the Rwandan government jet to fly from Rwanda to London to watch Arsenal play and the red carpet is rolled out for him at the Emirates Stadium. He's been President for 22 years now and theres no sign of shifting him. A family member of mine met him about twenty years ago, in his early days as President he used to let tourists come to the palace in Kigali and he would meet them and give a little speech about rebuilding Rwanda after the civil war and genocide.

The DailyFail would be right up the street for the type of critical thinkers that support him. The majority of the top comments on the articles on their sites are still coming from Russia.
As always the biggest help to the Tories won't be themselves but the nasties that are so prominent in labour, especially in the activist base of the party.
The Tories just have to be less nasty, less snobbish, less arrogant than Labour, appear even barely competent.

Well this is kind of my point, he'll be chucking a hand grenade into debates from time to time but he doesn't have a strong enough set of beliefs or fundamentally care enough about politics to become a significant influence in the manner of Tucker Carlson.
