I didn't think she said anything too wild tbh.
How dare you, we do not like Marty!!
Country folk like him though, the type of people who tend to smell of cabbage.
The more attention that's brought to Marty's atrocious commentating the better. His spiel before the hurling final was nauseating.
The irony of Murph giving out about people who “**** on sports commentators” and then gives out about Marty Morrissey commentating on sports.
If it had of been a male sports star it would have got more attention.....yeah because they're more famous. She had the chip on the shoulder alright. Think eoin tried to pull her up on one or two things without outright calling her out on them.
Anyone sit through the Brittney Griner episode? Eoin let that that reporter talk a lot of shít without pulling her up on a few things
I'd agree, he does have his own mind and does have his own opinions, that's grand but he never says anything interesting , I've nothing against the guy I'm sure he is sound, he just isn't engaging as a "pundit"
In relation to your opening paragraph, I'd disagree entirely with everything you said. I've never heard him deliver any insightful or interesting comments that would differ from the general take on topics. Like you said it's all a matter of opinion, but I've skipped over far more contributions from Richie than anyone else on the pod. Just find him bland to the point of irratation.
TV money works around 800k per club per season. Emma Hayes is on 200k as Chelsea manager, that's 20% at least gone on one person's salary. Never mind bonuses etc
I like Richie's contribution to the show and thoughts on football. He has his own mind and forms his own opinions in a way that is different to the usual podcast/newspaper crew. While he was a footballer he tries to view things for what they are unlike many reporters who get caught up in the circus of group think and clichés.
The vast majority of football journos have the job because of their language ability, which in someone like Ken's case its brilliant, he's hilarious and he's willing to entertain with his talent. But Ken, like most of them live in a world where their opinions don't matter so it's just entertainment for adults. Some, like Wilson, lean heavily on the contrarian mode, or like graham hunter use the tabloid thing of flattering the readers intelligence, Delaney does that itk thing. Richie could never be any of these.
Former players usually go for the in my day mould but that only really works if you've been a great. Richie wasn't. He reached a level just below the very elite that was still far superior to 99.99% of those that try. He had the signs of success but still in the eyes of many was not a success. At the end he had to really rationalise his life and see the wood for the trees. He seems to take that into much of his work and i like that.
Still though, you're free not to be into that.
Outside TV money? Which is how most soccer leagues are funded now? Why discount that here?
I just find his delivery boring, he sends me to sleep, and he seemed to be on for the whole show, 20 mins would have been enough
The attendances are also very low and outside of whatever TV money they get, I doubt any of the professional women clubs make any money.
Talk of pay parity is all very well, but people aren't going to pay £30+ a month to watch WSL - pay is proportiional to revenues.
That's a fantastic deal for Clayton in particular, who is basically a passenger with a bad hairdo 😁
Richie is good at certain topics such as player chair etc but when it comes to regular football chats he's soooooo sloooow and ponderous. I like him but just not on those topics
Would agree with a lot of this. Not sure what exactly people found boring about it? He made some very good points about it.
I watched bits and pieces of women's Euros and it was certainly entertaining in the main. The BBC coverage was akin to Russian state propoganda TV when it came to England, but apart from that I was more interested in it than I expected to be.
There's a lot of shark jumping going on though all the same. Summertime with limited alternatives and a nation of event junkies (not a criticism, it's the same as ourselves) results in the crowds we saw at Wembley yesterday. Seen talk of game changers, calls for pay parity now etc.
Let's see how the interest holds over the next few months.
I thought it was pretty decent by Richie, not sure how popular the tournament was here but I watched a good chunk of the Euros and found it quite enjoyable.
Also, anything which can increase exposure to the women's game can't be a bad thing. Makes a nice change from hearing about Ronaldo
yeah it was pretty dull.
TBH I doubt much of their audience have much interest in the Women’s Euros but they probably felt that they had to cover it.
If they didn't have Ken covering football and whatever else their audience would probably halve.
Real snoozefest today from Richie
I couldn't disagree more - Ken is their biggest draw. The Football podcast is very much Ken's Show and it nearly always gets more listens than the general podcast.
Ya, but I assume that's a separate deal. Murph has a column there too.
True, but equally without Eoin's hosting they'd struggle. And for all his apparent faults, Murph is excellent for GAA and other sports. They all bring something to the table but does Ken do an equal amount as the others?
Doesn't Ken write for the Irish times as well though?
Without Ken’s football coverage they would struggle
Maybe. I assumed that the likes of Premier Sports for Eoin and columns for Ken & Murph are completely separate. Without knowing the ins and outs of the workings of second captains, it looks like Ken & Simon get the best deal...
Maybe it’s like how Paul McGuinness apparently got U2 to agree at the start of their careers that they’d all get paid the same, to prevent jealousy and bad blood when they got successful.
Although presumably Ken, Murph and Eoin get paid separately for their extra curricular activities
I was wondering about that story that came out a few weeks ago that reported that the 5 lads all draw the same salary from the company. I was listening to the radio show on Saturday and it's just Eoin & Murph, with Mark as series producer. And then Mark did the BBC work for the George Gibney pod, so how does that even out I wonder?
