Why? They've backed down heaps of times already. While I lived in China, there were often reports and news releases by the PLA about responding to US/Australian naval vessels in the South China sea, going so far as to mobilise their reserves, issuing bitchy rhetoric, and... then they backed down. Again. And again.

The Chinese leadership love to posture. The risk is that people will continue to think they're posturing when they actually commit, but as Yurt has said, any military commitment by China would set the whole of Asia against them. While individually none of the Asian nations are a threat to China, combined they provide a wide range of specialisms, and opens China up to warfare on just about all their borders.

Lots of posturing and flexing from the Chinese, but at the end of the day they need to keep selling their plastics and electronics to the rest of the world to keep their head above water. War would be economic suicide for an already troubled economy.

Nobody is scared of Russia's conventional war capacity any more. I don't know what war you're following but they're making a joke of themselves. If nukes weren't on the table, Poland alone could join the fray and send Russia as far back as they would wish to push them.

The truth is America and allies are actually surprised at how well Russia is doing considering Ukraine have gotten the best of western military equipment and training on how to use them. This is the first proper warfare in a long time. America and England were in Afgan and Iraq against ak47's and RPG's. And the old heavy machine gun. They would be humiliated also if the so called terrorists were giving modern western military equipment.

The last proper war America were in was Vietnam and they done terrible there.

Is Pelosi going to start a war between China and the US? In contrast to Ukraine, if China reacts in some way that involves an invasion or military blockade of the island, there will be almost immediate engagement. It's definitely worth watching what the Chinese do. I'd be amazed if they backed down after issuing warnings. What kind of action they take is unknown. My guess is that the US military has its satellites watching the Chinese alerts on the mainland and the same Chinese are watching US battleships moving towards Taiwan.

You're placing an edgelord bet that the PRC can take Taiwan (they can't) and in the attempt, not send their country into a tailspin (the attempt certainly would).

An attempt on Taiwan will see an immediate revision of the Japanese pacifist constitution. Even leaving the US out of the equation, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and a raft of South East Asian states like Vietnam, the Philippines, probably Indonesia will turn their ire on China.

Zero country's in the region will tolerate Beijing turning the Pacific into a Chinese lake.

Pax Americana in the Pacific is overwhelmingly popular. Everyone in the region who matters in the region distrusts China and let the US police the sea lanes and skies to that end.

P.S, Russia are f*cked in the Ukraine. They've exposed themselves as a third rate 'power' and they've copperfastend American presence in Europe for another century (and with the support of Europe in case it needs to be said).

It’s a nice history lesson but what has that got to do with where we are now? For starters, most Chinese probably don’t know the half of their rich history because their god like leader has decided what they should learn instead. So to them all that matters is now.

Except, they do know their own history. It's only the more recent debacles by the CCP that are heavily censored.. but their ancient culture/history is heavily pushed in schools, and universities. There are nuanced differences with western history for the region, but it's pretty much the same except where it intersects with modern politics such as Tibet.

Besides which, the internet has never been completely blocked, and anyone with a wee bit of patience can get whatever info they want sourced from western sites. Also, there's a busy business of importing books from Taiwan, and Korea, which tends to bypass many of the government censorship checks.

As for why history matters, well.. the Chinese understand the difficulties of ruling over a huge territory containing many different ethnic/cultural groups.. so they're not going to be going on any rampage to acquire territory. That's an important lesson from history to consider. They'll take opportunities to nibble at their neighbours borders for any area that already has a Chinese population, but it's unlikely that they would expand beyond that. Modern history has shown the cost of occupying territory of a hostile population, and China has enough problems as it is.

You can appreciate the Chinese mindset by taking into account the historical cultural conditioning that has been going on for centuries, and continues to this day. Confucius is a great example of that, as he's taught in every aspect of Chinese society.. and it's reinforced in how most people behave, or interact with each other. There are heaps of traditional perspectives going back as far as the Ming Dynasty that are still acted out today.. because the CCP saw the advantage in reinforcing the conditioning that already existed, and built upon it. Chinese people are generally very predictable.. until they become emotional. That's when they become dangerous.. and worth stepping lightly around.

Don't disregard history when it comes to Asian societies. We've mostly put our traditional conformity/behaviours/perspectives behind us, but they haven't.

For centuries China tried to isolate itself from the world (apart from some honest trading), the great wall was built to keep the world out.They also once built a great ocean going fleet to explore...and promptly burned it when they found out what was out there!.

China was happy with controlling the Asia region through influence, and the performance of Tribute from their neighbours. They didn't need to expand outwards because they had everything they needed within their own territories, or handed to them from others. It wasn't due to any fear of foreigners.. although the fear of foreign culture was related to the effect on the peasant population, which is mirrored in most Asian nations, including those who were more expansionist.

Modern China wants a return to the old days when they're the Asian superpower, able to bully their neighbours into bowing their heads, and ultimately bask in the praise of being so wonderful. Expanding much beyond their own borders would weaken them too much.. however, they will seek to create allies that are subservient to them, through whatever means available to them.

Any invasion with the current military reality would see tens of thousands of PRC sailors at the bottom of the ocean - and American, Japanese and Australian navies sitting in wait with their thumb up their ar*e having a good chuckle not having to get involved in any meaningful way.

The PRC ability to project power is completely untested and knowing what we know about the PLA, it's as corrupted as the Russian military. Officers are more interested in running side-hustles and property scams than they are an efficient military. They won't be able to keep their airforce in the sky for any meaningful length of time to seriously threaten Taiwanese sovereignty.

Tankies will have to place their sh*tcoin bets on another autocrat sometime at an indeterminate point in the future. Reality doesn't favour them this time either.

As for Pelosi, Gingrich visited Taiwan back in '97 as House Speaker. The Chinese sucked it up then, and if Pelosi lands, they'll have to suck it up now. Launching a military offensive off the back of that will impress precisely zero leaders in the international community, apart from countries bought by Beijing and Moscow. Even sh*ttier pretext for war than Putin cobbled together.
