Interesting fallout on the climate change targets.
McConalogue is dancing around the topic of reducing the herd. He knows it needs to reduce to make the targets but he wont actually say it. It's priceless.
The chair of the Climate Change Advisory Council said the numbers do not add up. The Act specified 51% reduction in emissions but the new plan only shows 43%. She also has no faith in the forestry plans - she said they already had a plan to increase forestry by 8000 hectares a year but they are only hitting 2000 a year over the past few years.
Is Micheal still in Japan and that why he wasn't about for any press conferences yesterday?
What about Leo? Is he away too or did he do a runner after the deal?
Any sign of Paschal?
Not quite the Headlines FFGG were hoping for this morning, universal displeasure. The contrived past few days hasn't gone quite to plan, they are all looking like fools.
Lots of coverage so no need to add links, Green senators, TDS bitching, government TDs too.
I'm going to blame it on my 0600 hours pre caffeine eyes when I initially read this, but I thought it said "Mary Lou McDonald" and thought, well she would say that, wouldn't she.
Popcorn at my Gaff 😏
Night all
And as you said neither does Pippa. Here comes the summer of our discontent.
Couldn't think of his name, doesn't look to happy 😏
She was appointed to the Seanad by FG.
Most people were quite angry with AIB and how the government made a mess of things.
Regards...jmcc
Guy on the left is Martin Heydon, Minister of State with responsibility for Research and Development, Farm Safety, and New Market Development.
Mary Louise O'Donnell mentioned the Brazilian beef. She also mentioned that if she was a young person she would be voting SF after what AIB tried to do and how the government reacted to it.
A picture can say a 1000 words 😏
Did Leo & MM leg it after the "Breakthrough" 🤔
Look at the face on the fella on the left , Pippa not exactly over come with Joy 😏
Missed that part. Watched some of the show. Two FG (the Indo chap and Marie Louise O'Donnell), one FF (David Davin Power) and two others. No surprises. It is amazing that people can stay awake watching it.
Can someone direct me to this cheap chicken and beef please , I'm being fleeced in Aldi 😁
The Greens are really two parties. There's the hardcore Green element who voted Green even when there was no hope of a candidate being elected. There's also a more naive Leftist element to the Greens. Many of these Leftist Green supporters are either ex-Labour or the kind of people who believed that Greta Thunberg was some kind of genius.
The hardcore Greens realise that it is important to get policies implemented and that requires compromise. The Leftist Greens expect everything to be given to them because they believe that they are right. They have just had a very big lesson in Realpolitik. The Greens were never going to get 30% and even 25% is a win for them.
The European Greens are very Left wing and some of them have their roots in Communist parties. The Irish Greens are quite the opposite and have been described as "FG on bikes". Some of the supporters don't realise the difference between Irish Greens and European Greens. They may convinced to see the 25% as a win. FFers and FGers are going to be very angry with Ryan and the Greens. Some of the hardcore Greens have been around since 2007 when there was a split in the Greens about going into government with FF. In political terms, they will accept whatever is necessary to get Green policies implemented. Ryan now has to convince the Leftist element in the Greens that this was a good deal.
On the Tonight show on Virgin Media culling Irish herds and importing Brazilian beef is mentioned.
Right now we have lots of cheap chicken from abroad being sold here and as Francie says cheap beef is next. Anything to lessen costs is why this will happen alongside the reduction of Irish herds.
If you are a genuine Green this is the day when the chickens of taking the comfy seats come home to roost or it should be.
Still trying to work out the implications for this deal on party support. The winner, surprisingly, may be the Greens. The Turf War hit its support but if this is seen as a win against FF/FG, it could result in a slight gain in support in the next poll. FG might take a hit over this (traditionally the farmer party). FF may escape without as much damage. It won't be a major (>5%) boost for the Greens though.
It may have some implications on the Left as well as some of the smaller parties have not been visible. SF's refusal to be dragged into this FFG mess was smart. (Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.) Though it is very hard to measure in small sample national polls, Labour's support could be damaged from this due to an ABFF/FG/SF and virtue signaller (the Greta Thunberg supporters) vote shifting back to the Greens. It depends on the spin that the Greens put on the 25%. The SocDems might be OK as they are more a social issues/Left party than one where green issues play a major part.
Wonder if John Paul Phelan/FG will resign the whip?
Bingo. Hole in one
Jesus are you blind to the logic. Cheap Brazilian beef will flood the market and local producers won’t be able to compete.
It is as mindless as banning peat briquettes then importing them from Germany and Eastern Europe.
All to give Greens a warm fuzzy feeling as the rest of the Amazon forests disappear. But sure Eamo got 25%. Woo hoo.
Based on what?
Even is we cull 25% of the national herd we will still be producing more than enough meat for the people of Ireland. So why are we importing meat from Brazil?
We are not importing Brazilian beef at the moment. I never claimed we are, I said we would be.
According to the CSO Ireland exported almost €3.8 billion euros worth of meat with a volume of over 1.03 million tonnes in 2020. This includes the following sectors and commodities: Beef worth almost €2.3 billion or almost 518,000 tonnes was exported to around 70 countries.
Why are we importing beef from Brazil? when at the moment we export over 518k tonnes of meat
In 2020 for instance we imported 24k tonnes? the question would have to be why are we importing such a tiny amount while we export such large quantities. Why can't the Irish farmer produce that 24k tonnes of meat? I would expect no reason.
The numbers don't lie. Ireland does not need to import meat from Brazil, never has and never will in the future
Yes, I mentioned the CO2 as some Brazilian Beef will be imported into Ireland.
If we have less beef for the Irish market we will have to import to make up the shortfall.
So a minute ago the EU had a trade deal and you tried to talk about CO2 to bring meat to ireland
Why would we be importing? We produce 530k tonnes and export 470k tonnes of it
Even if we cull the herd we still are exporting the majority of our meat so why are we importing from brazil?
We should be selling Irish beef to Irish customer. We should be growing more veg to sell to Irish customers. We shouldn’t be replying on importing so much while at the same time exporting so much
Scare mongering going on is alarming, especially when the people clearly have no idea what Irish farming is
Indeed, I've seen it first hand.
Curious Brazil is irrelevant in the Agricultural Emissions debate , our 25% reduction is utterly meaningless if other countries are increasing their national herds, already substantially larger than ours and the Irony of the EU having a Trade Deal with Brazil for beef , Smells (no pun intended) of hypocrisy or at least contradictory.
I'm no bovine expert but Do Brazilian cows fart less 😏😁
So the trade deal is scaremongering? The culling of parts of the Amazon rainforest is scaremongering? We will be importing Brazilian beef to make up for less Irish beef being available because herds will be culled.
I have never seen before or since since twisted and deranged carry on.
Like what? I've never seen anything like that. Also it seems to be on your mind a lot and for no reason.
Do you have a problem with them being a gay couple or is it something else? And why keep bringing it up? Maybe talk to someone.
I'd rather discuss the government myself. You seem intent on attacking people and rambling on about Leo being gay. Very unhealthy.
It's more about jumping on people for criticising the Axis of unbelievable. Thread is littered with personal attacks.
The only good thing is this shows them up as the parish pump chancers they are to their prospective employers in the EU.
None of which has happened so it just scare mongering
Well, the EU has a trade deal with Brazil for their beef. So by culling some of our beef herd, we will replace it with Brazilian beef. The Amazon rain forest is been cut down so that more cattle can be raised and also think of the carbon footprint of the beef coming over here from Brazil.
