My elderly aunt who was on holidays in the US about 15 years ago would disagree with you. She fell and broke her leg on one of those conversation pits.
Interesting that when my US relatives were building anothe house since, they didn't put it another one of them.
There are safer ways for older people to get exercises.
Was that Sligo house featured in one of Dermot Bannon's programmes once? Feel that I've seen it before.
The converted church in Portobello was for sale for around €600K during the recession IIRC.
Same thing really though, sunken seating areas.
Sitting in a line facing the wall doesn't really encourage conversation in the same way that the red sofa one does though!
Any idea how many people get injured on stairs or just tripping in a house? Yes an extra risk in a house but it is a minor risk not a pit filled with spikes. There is angular sharp edged furniture that is more dangerous. I have a good few years left in my life where I could cope but the main reason I won't have one is I don't have the space.
Ah would you stop just because you and your mother can climb stairs doesnt mean every elderly person can do it with ease.
Of course steps like in that a conversation pit are a huge fall risk for for the elderly and for toddlers. It is by no means a minor risk. A fall for an elderly person can have serious consequences.
A stairs is a 'needed' risk. You need to go upstairs/downstairs if you have a second story. You don't need a conversation pit.
Fine if you want a conversation pit, everyone to their own but it is an additional hazard in your house that you put there intentionally. As was mentioned earlier, going down or up steps without a handrail isn't fun when you get old.
Whatever, don't get one then. Thousands and thousands of them exist and not injured anyone but if you are that risk adverse and find them not suitable for the occupants don't get a house with one. Other people are willing to accept the risk and like the concept. Some conversation pits are completely soft inside with no steps at but still a possible danger
I don't think you are not buying this house because of the pit but rather the €2mil asking price
That really is stunning. The house is grand but the combination of house and location are superb.
The Sligo place is a bit strange. 2 mill and it doesn't even come with front gates. Normally a 2 mill gaff would be either in splendid isolation (eg the Glengariff one) or surrounded by other 2 mill gaffs, eg, Malahide. But this one is surrounded by a time warp back to 1970s Ireland rural housing. The zoom lens helps with the coastal pics, but out the other side you have Ben Bulben, ignored. And what's with the caravan in the driveway?

The neighbours are too close for that price
That road was done by google in 2010. You can see the red pipping for wires. Could be for electric gate and could be installed now as it is 12 years later.
Ray Im not in the market for buying a house. Im lucky enough to have my own self build in the country that is better designed than that house. The only thing I dont have is the sea view. Thankfully I dont have a conversation pit as my disabled and elderly friends and family a very welcome in my home.
While the sea views from that house are spectacular, its mainly because there is plenty of land in the picture.
I lived in a house for a few months that had a sea view and it was extremely boring, there was no land in sight from within the house, not even close shore, and it was rather like looking at grey concrete most of the time, with the aggravation of permanently salted sprayed windows.
Where I am I have spectacular views of rolling hills and woodland, and mountains, and I love it.
When you look at the price per square metre, the house in Sligo and the house in Inchore are nearly the same!!!
710k for 120sqm....5.9k per sqm
2m for for 390 sqm....5.1k per sqm
WOULD CREDIT UNIOM GIMME A LOAN?😁
Its rather lovely, can't argue with it at all...except I could not imagine living there, not my lifestyle at all and my first thought was 'Stepford Wives'.
A couple of pics and the price. I have seen sheds being sold with more pics.
And what is with that website not loading google maps does that happen other people or just me?
I'm guessing the picture below taken from the advert is of two separate houses? If it is two separate houses, take it away ta fcuk. You can look straight into rooms in the other house.
I don't think I'd fit in with the neighbours or the lifestyle. 😁
It’s about €300,000 overpriced! And being nearer to Kilmainham makes no odds. It’s still in Inchicore! Although we do have loads of new coffee shops open since the pandemic which is great if you’re a coffee lover like myself.
You are seriously bothered by a design choice you don't like. Not for everybody as is your house most likely. Congrats on having a house that big and better designed. Of course that is your view
The €710k is way over what it is worth to most people alright, the asking price of €450k was even a bit much IMO but obviously there are people willing to pay that and more.
First it's the fancy coffee shops, then it'll be a burrito bar, artisinal sandwiches, a pizza place and that's it, prices go mad 🤣
If you look it up on Eircode, it's a development of seven houses built in the back garden of the South African Ambassadors residence and their neighbour. Seven houses shoehorned into two gardens. If you look on google maps, they look brand new. An awful sum of money to spend.
Yep. "End of terrace". 1 of 6 houses. For 7 million quid.
Site was the old Chester Beatty library. Bought in the late 90s, sat there and sold for 10m a few years ago.
Nice profit!
Stunning. People will be stunned when they see it.
That's not 2 houses, its 7. What you are getting for your 7m is the section to the left, with the white apex wall section. The area between the first and second chimneys. There are two more houses in the left hand building and 4 in the right. Look at the chimneys.
Nos 1 and 7 -the two ends, have slightly more 'presence' and are a bit bigger than the others so presumably will be the more expensive ones, giving you that essential sense of superiority for your money.
Live close to Bulfin road house myself. There was a house close to me went up at 450k to entice bids and sold for 100k over asking. It was a tactic to get as many bidders as possible suggested by EA. Kilmainham is a lovely place to live as close to city and parks/gardens were a god send during lockdown. 710 is a lot but similar houses renovated to this standard were going for 650k + on Inchicore road. I still think it’s madness but not that out of line with house prices in this part of city.
Same.
I put away the wallet when I realised that 🤣
For €7m I'd want something a bit more private than that.
If I'd €7m to spend on a house, I'd buy something like this and maybe spend about €1m modernising/decorating it and then have €2m in the back pocket as loose change.
Where's the dives in this, this thread used to highlight great rent rip offs in Dublin and other places, bring a bit of reality back into the thread.
