His putter was stone cold. If he got the birdies on 3,6 and 9 like he should have done, It would have made Cameron Smith and everyone elses task a lot harder. McIlroy's putter let everyone else back in. It gave his opponents the belief they needed to think they could come and have a go at him.

Shooting -2 was below average today unfortunately if you look at what the field shot.

I never said he choked I think he’s playing the best golf he has for years, he should have won this imo had he been more aggressive and went for pins he’d have won, today wasn’t a day for pars . He’ll be back of course but this will sting

Good Open and good win for C Smith, one of the best players in the world at the moment who won the Players in similar birdie blitz fashion.
For the inevitable posts about McIlroy choking or playing badly save yourself the trouble you might as well post ‘I know nothing about professional golf or sport’ He shot -2 with no bogeys and played 17 as aggressively as anyone. C Smith is probably worlds best putter right now.

Funny thing this morning was McGinley saying what's different this week is his putting is great and then he goes and putts nothing today.
Rory choked in the sense that 2 under was poor as regards a winning drive..
Stenson's 63 to win in Troon a few years ago was pretty good too
Disappointed for McIlroy. 2, 8, T5, and now a 3 in majors this year. He played superb golf. Hopefully he gets one again soon.
To be fair, you could argue he choked with the putter today.
He was excellent tee to green though. Am I right in thinking he was 18/18 greens in regulation? Can’t remember he missed. So to only get two birdies from that is really disappointing. He’ll be gutted after that round.

I was watching the hurling but I thought Smith had bottled it after yesterday's round. Was surprised when I switched over and saw Smith had 5 birdies in a row.
Average score 69. So 70 with a four shot lead this morning isn't doing much wrong.
I believe in Hovland sparked early it might have pulled him along to be more aggressive.
Im sorry , he shot a 70 which was below the average score for the day. So what does that mean? Nothing?

He shot a poor 70. If people want to say he chocked then thats a valid opinion. Hovland certainly choked as well. Conditions were perfect, 2under today on the day that mattered vs 16under over the first 3 days. Thats chokestown.
This is it in most Majors (if not all) since the last time he won Rory's name would not be mentioned coming the last few holes or even the final round as sometimes he would be gone by the end of the 3rd. Maybe this will invigorate
Yea I hear you it’s happened me many times, I’m not slaying him at all but do believe he should have been more proactive that’s all, just my opinion, good news for his fans is he is back to his best the last 6 months
I don't know what to make of that. Smith played well, but Rory and Victor especially, didn't play great. Look at their final round scores compared to many of the others near the top.
I don't know if Rory concentrated too much on staying ahead of Victor and forgetting about the others. You have to go down to Kim Si-woo to find the next score in the 70's. It's going to cause Rory a few sleepless nights. He had shot 66-68-66 before today.
