If being an unaligned country with a large army is no deterrent to Putin's ambitions is it time for ROI to join Nato?
If I was attacked in a pub, you would be reading about an attack that was also in progress in a curry house 20 KM away and be calling the Guards asking if it was ok to help. Once the guards told you it was safe you would be there trying to get all parties to shake hands
Russian jets. Obviously.
Russian jets get sent to mess with the UK. UK jets get dispatched to troll them back.
Irish airspace just happens to be en route for all these shenanigans. Who exactly are we supposed to owe thanks to.
We go from 0. Nothing happening.
To -1. Russia nato bullsht in our skies.
And then are restored to 0. Nato chases off the Russian trouble it attracted, original state of nothingness restored.
So why in the fuk would we say thanks to anyone.
Have we profited in some way?
Let me throw your dinner in the bin. Now here have a new one. You're welcome by the way.
What mess now would that be ?
Local regional power with some relevancy.
Russia enters Irish airspace for the purpose of fcking with a nato country.
The least nato could do is clean up their own mess.
They also mess around off Swedish airspace and waters. Wonder why. Oh they were not in NATO but on Boarder with NATO.
Yeah. They're probably targeting ballyhaunis.
No Ireland Attracts the Jets as were the weak link on NATO's border.
I see this is back in the news.
And I see mention again of how generous the UK is in defending us. Its so nice of them to protect our skies.
... From Russian jets which they fcking attracted in the first place.
imagine this. Your partner is being brutally assaulted in front of you and crying for help.
Francie’s response to her is that he is neutral and won’t get involved, leaving her to the mercy of her assailants, but get this, he expects her to accept his decision without rancor.
By god, when the real heat gets here tomorrow or Monday, heaven knows what will be said.
Imagine giving that country a veto on the use of our armed forces, you would be horrified by that………………….oh.
We are out for a pint bob. If you wanna start a fight with someone that’s your business. If somebody attacks you I will step in and try to stop it snd get youse to shake hands not prolong it.
I can just imagine a night down the pub with Francie.
When it comes to his round - if you are my friend/partner you will accept that I am not going to buy a round and if you don't then you are not a genuine friend/partner.
A partner (equal) would accept your decision without rancour.
If they don’t they are not a partner. They want something that cannot be given.
I think we have to spend money though. We will see if the government follow through
Ok so they will only be "genuine" partners if they accept that Ireland does not want to contribute anything to community values & security?
You absolutely do sit on your laurels with neutrality - come back on this when you spent more than 1% of GDP on your own defence.
Until then just admit that you are a parasite living off of other states.
If they are genuine 'partners' they will respect our desire to be neutral. We don't sit on our laurels in neutrality, we offer a valuanle peacekeeping role which will always be needed
There are two entirely different problems being discussed.
Problem 1). Irish integrity. Ireland’s physical integrity does not necessarily require NATO membership. A good defense force will do the job adequately enough. There are arguments for and against for cyber security, but let’s assume that Ireland somehow funds something suitable.
Problem 2). Ireland’s economic prosperity relies on its trading partners. It is in Ireland’s interest to have trading partners across Europe who are free to trade as they will. It is thus in Ireland’s interest to aid in the protection of the integrity and freedom of those trading partners, especially those who are close trading partners such as those in the EU.
Yes. It’s obvious to anyone that Britain/Nato will take action in our airspace or waters if they perceive a threat to themselves.
Thats is why xxxxxl is being evasive. Think through the fantasy next time maybe.
Ireland wouldn't be able to stop them, but then what do this invading force do next?
How would being part of NATO help in any way? The time it would take to get NATO to respond and Ireland would still have been taken over by this 5k large invasion force.
If not a member of NATO the what are those 5k troops doing next. Their supply lines are longer and more complicated routes than pretty much any there is, unless I guess trying to invade Switzerland without entering another EU / NATO country on the way.
Those 5k troops are cut off from resupply the moment they land, whilst they can do a lot very quickly, as soon as they need something they are out luck.
Why would they invade us? You are being evasive here because the credibility of your fantasy is about to fall apart.
Weak link in NATO's back door large American MN presence. Number of reasons. No ability to defend against the smallest attack.
They are 'wasting' troops anyhow...would be of no concern logically therefore
What would the purpose be invading us? Your next consideration.
Why not attack the UK.. They would be destroyed in moments. they have means of defending themselves. We do not.
Why would anyone attack and waste troops as you say? What would the purpose be?
I'd they are going to waste troops why not attack Britain?
So As I thought were on our own. How do we defend against any number of militant men in numbers invading via shannon. Garda ? Army. Answers on a postcard. 🤔
I think given the choice the Irish people will emphatically reject getting involved with heroes like these.
What countries border Ukraine I will wait. NATO was expanding was the call.
You could conjure up any threat you want but it has to be realistic. If somebody has nothing to lose there is no protection in the world that will stop them.
Not the same, Ukraine is a former Soviet state and has a land border with Russia. It's hysterical to suggest Russia could invade Ireland.
Ask yourself, if NATO are the defender why have they not helped Ukraine other than supplying weapons (which must be paid for)
But your not critically thinking about it. 5k throw away troops could wreak Ireland. Regardless of their ability to defeat the Ukraine. We have nothing to stop it.
Ah here, you think Russia are going to do that for the lols. That's just not credible sorry. Russia are struggling a few miles from home ffs.
