IS this another example of the Government getting things unbelievably wrong?
From a couple of weeks ago, I am sure many remember -
Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien claimed the points of Independent TD Carol Nolan could “pose a risk to social cohesion”.
He said: “We will take in as many Ukrainian citizens fleeing the brutal war foisted upon them through no fault of their own as we must. We will not introduce any caps in that regard.”
................
“What she is effectively calling for is a cap on immigration and asylum seekers in this country. Let us be clear. I am calling that out. That is what she is calling for.
“We will not support that. We will not support a cap on Ukrainians coming here having fled a war foisted upon them through no fault of their own.”
It posed challenges, he admitted, but the Irish people realise that. “This is a welcoming country,” he said.
To today
Voters are concerned at the numbers of refugees coming to Ireland and favour a limit on the number of Ukrainians who are admitted into the country, according to the latest Irish Times/Ipsos poll.
.....
A large majority of respondents (84 per cent) to the poll said that they agreed with the statement “There is a limit to the number of asylum seekers and refugees Ireland can cope with”, while 60 per cent said they were concerned that “too many asylum seekers and refugees might come to Ireland”.
According to the current polling, SF is moving towards winning a majority. A merged FF and FG party may stop that. What made the 2020 GE unusual was the number of votes that SF won. Had it the number of candidates to match those votes, it would have won many more seats and the current Dail landscape would look very different. Instead, SF transfers ended up getting many non-SF TDs elected including Greens and SocDems.
In a future GE and with the SF votes holding up or even increasing, the number of SF TDs would be higher than the current number of SF TDs. Consequently, other current non-SF TDs would lose their seats as crucial SF transfers disappear. This effect was visible in 2016 with Labour when the FF and FG transfers on which its candidates depended disappeared along with Labour TDs.
SF is moving towards the percentage necessary to win a majority though those polling percentages can change closer to election time. That does not mean that SF cannot win a majority. There's also your assumption that there will be a GE in 2025 when there are already serious doubts about the viability of the current government with FF members meeting to plan to remove Martin and voicing their concerns about how FG has stomped all over FF. The phrases used to in the meeting might upset your delicate FG sensibilities so I will not repeat them.
SF got the largest number of votes in the 2020 GE. It also ended up with more TDs than FG (37 seats to FG's 35) and almost equal to FF's number of TDs (38). None of the parties "won" the GE and none came close to a majority. You don't know that there will be a GE in 2025. You won't know until after the next GE how many seats SF will have won. On the current polling, SF is moving towards the level of support necessary to win a majority of seats in a GE. That is obviously a problem for FF and FG as the latest poll shows a loss of 7% in support for FFG. Since you are the one talking about odds, how many seats would FG win on 18%?
Regards...jmcc
More army barracks to be used, can't be sure does he have any Army barracks in his constituency 🤔
Are you saying we should stop taking in Ukrainian refugees?
Whatever...such babies.
The real winner is Corruption, Cronyism, Waste etc
Keep them coming lads whats the problem
And the logic of that is that those who win the election are those who go into government.
The others are losers.
I know you will try claim its not because it gives his incompetence and lying a pass, but you should read the comments. Hint* they explain the criticism.
They are just waffling while they drain as much money out of housing as they can. The wheels came off when we start buying houses to use as social and hotels and B&B's became the norm.
A disaster suggests an accident or incompetence. Its a plan and working nicely for them.
Ironically incoming Ukrainians looking for housing might benefit the Irish citizens who have been calling for FF/FG to invest in state sponsored housing for years but getting ignored.
Go on say it your dying to, they hate him cause hes gay.
They hate Micheal cause hes straight i suppose too?
At this point it is inconceivable how much FFG have completely fcuked the housing (and rental) market over the past 20 years. It's just completely FUBAR now. Every aspect of housing is messed up and it looks like the taxpayer will have to spend 6 billion fixing what we already have (Mica + Unregulated properties).
Michael D was holding back when he called it a disaster.
And their feeble excuses will just sicken an already disgusted electorate.
I want to them to stay in power for as long as possible and face up to their failings on a daily basis.
Don't think that's it.
She and Humphries in real trouble politically over this, Meath slowly turning into refugee camp. The meath Chronicle reporting on the Tent city, this is going to get ugly and Tayto Park may even be considered next 😉
Helen can bring a few boxes of taytos.
Has it occurred to you he is singularly bad at his job? I don't like FF or Michael Martin but at least he has shown some competence in leading his troops.
Meanwhile growing tensions, could FFFG just end this misery, do the decent thing a go.
Sorry for the Guff Link, no distress intended.
Housing again but no concern for those in emergency Accommodation of course, the Indo virtue signalling gain.
I wondered will MM, Helen McEntee and Heather Humphries be in attendance to greet the fortunate refugees on their way to Gormanstoen Camp. Delightful looking place, gosh I hope there's some landscaping done for the Ribbon cutting ceremony and photo ops.
One wonders at the motivation.
He's shite at his job and tells lies. Wonder no more.
There is a concerted effort to portray 'blocking houses' as something sinister. To my mind it is a tactic designed to allow a return to the circus that was the Celtic Tiger.
This is what it costs if planning and regulation becomes subservient to crony development and bad unregulated building on inappropriate sites.
A housing crisis is not a charter to return to this.
The fixation with Leo is particularly interesting. From Leo the Leak to Leo the Loser, the constant vitriol directed towards him is particularly unhealthy for those spouting it. One wonders at the motivation.
It remains amazing to me that some people consider that a party going into opposition and seeing zero of its policies being enacted for five years can be considered to have won an election. Government is for winners, opposition is for losers.
Yes you are getting it now. No party will win an overall majority for decades, if ever again. FF were the only party to do it and look how corrupt it made them.
I was going to point this out but couldn't have been bothered, thank you 😉
You show the hypocrisy over these things by refusing to see what is right in front of you in that article. You parse what she actually said to exclude the bit that explains what she meant. Much like the tactic of inventing/misrepresenting things people say here and then ranting about them.
She won the contest for the popular vote, is what she said, it's there in a direct quote attributed to her
Sinn Féin has won the election. We have won the popular vote,
and immediately got cancelled here for saying what was abundantly obvious.
A that old chestnut "Guff" when it comes to links, Polls, opinions, observations some don't like. Blind delusion I call it.
Just a little titbit from a very interesting new Poll this morning, premium article from the IT, one of three articles on a matter I discussed yesterday that resulted a few misguided Jibes.
The Pie Chart on the Right says it all, the pie chart on the left is all that FFFG will focus on of course, but I'll just say this adhering to international obligations doesn't include or require willful neglect of their responsibilities towards their own citizens.
Its like how the FG/Lab government and its drones tried to claim everyone was a Paul Murphy supporter, which wasn't true of course. Its not clever to go after the general public and more convenient to tie them to a politician or party. That way they can say 'you support PBP' then go after PBP and you by proxy. Its tough for FF/FG to wallow in their crony incompetence and even tougher to be called out on it by the public. Thats why currently everyone's a shinner, (sung to 'everyone's a winner' by Hot Chocolate) and also why they spend an inordinate amount of time whinging about social media.
Its not them and their crises thats wrong, its everybody else, who are shinners, so they are just biased anyway. Its a comfort I suppose.
With the way both Martin and Varadkar have treated the citizens of this country they deserve all the grief they get.
Well, MLMD did say she won that election.
Yet how can a party win an election when they are only approx 40% of the way there to an overall majority?
It seems 'winning' changes depending on the party you are talking about. FG never won an election, even though they got 76 seats in 2011, yet somehow magically SF 'won' the 2020 election with 37 seats.
Highly amusing logic by the usual crew.
An overall majority for SF will need them to take in 86-91 seats*. What you are saying therefore if SF fail to win those seats they won't have 'won' the general election. And since we have not had one since 1977, the odds of SF getting one are next to none. So already we can say that SF has lost the GE of 2025. That is your point, isn't it?
*Election commission yet to draw up the new constituencies.
I too would like these links.
Some people just post awful guff about the government and think they can get away with it.
(Everyone's a shinner if they speak out about the holy trinity of Eamon, Leo and Michael)
Here's my guess.
2 of the 3 (Michael and Eamon) were ministers of the government when the economy was driven over the cliff. Yes Nigel, FF who you seem to be fairly supportive of, were knee deep in shady deals, corruption and incompetence which over the years resulted in the country losing its sovereignty and the troika having to be called in. Resulting in mass emigration, unemployment and suicide.
Why are people displeased with them once again, less than a decade later getting their grubby little incompetent paws at the levers of power again?
I think I answered it above.
Leo comes across as a highly dislikeable and hypocritical, child like narcissistic individual.
Sooner FG get rid of him the better for them in my mind.
Sorry Nigel, but you did ask.
