I've finally decided on a machine to get.

Lenovo Legion 5 with RTX 3060 GPU.

Cheapest outlet is manufacturers website.

But it will require a bump in RAM from 8 to 16 GB.

As I understanding this is a commonly done modification.

Where does one typically go to get a reliable job done?

Find the laptop's exact model number. It may not be user upgradable. If it has a user accessible memory slot you can just pick one of these:

It's very easy.

You just need to follow these simple rules.

RTFM - Read The Manual.
Get all necessary screwdrivers ready. Also get a plastic tub or mat for screws (magnetic tray is best but not necessary).
Turn off the laptop. Remove the battery (if possible & directed to do by the manual) / discharge the laptop by holding power.
Find the RAM slots.
Hold new RAM by the upper edge and align the gold contacts to the pin.
Lock it in.

the back of the machine lacks a memory slot. i.e. a user cannot upgrade the machine. @Sugar_Rush you will have to put the machine up for service. The guy that replaced your phone battery might be able to do it. Also, have you checked CPUz report? Are both RAM slots occupied? Or just one?

My mistake, I was looking at an older Lenovo model that had replaceable RAM slots. As-is, if the Lenovo 82JH does not have RAM slots, it MUST be ordered with 16Gb when new - there is no way to add more afterwards!

There is a Medion machine on Amazon for just over 1K right now - Medion Deputy P25 15.6" AMD Ryzen 7-5800H 16GB 512 FHD 144 Hz RTX 3060 Gaming Laptop.

If you buy a laptop with soldered on RAM with the intention to upgrade that RAM later, you might not be too happy when you realise later on.

Normally one stick is soldered and another slot is sodimm. Op if the laptop is coming with 8 gb ram in single channel the buy a second 8 gb stick. If it comes with 16 fb soldered buy another 16gb for the spare slot etc. it’s an easy install but if not comfortable bring it to your phone guy.

I think it tends to be more common on high-end and ultralight because it can save a bit of space/weight. A bit like the way you can't replace a battery on an expensive iphone but you probably can on a cheap Chinese knock-off. (Yes, Lenovo is owned by the Chinese. Bought it from IBM I think)

😆 very true... expansion and upgrades are a bitch. A long time ago there used to be MXM modules to upgrade the GPU but it's just more profitable to sell you a brand new machine... ;) anyway, @Sugar_Rush you need to use CPUz to determine the exact brand and model of your existing memory and find someone willing to crack open your laptop to slot-in the new SODIMM module.

Ordered Tuesday, received today.

Spec checks out so they sent me the correct model etc.

Got it registered so 1 year of customer care and warrenty.

I need to update the memory and RAM for sure though, will go through everything in the next few days and hopefully get that sorted.

My 8 year old laptop has almost three times as much memory as this rig (though no dedicated graphics card and much weaker processor).

For the ram, any ddr4 sodimm at 3200 MHz speed. Then for the SSD, any nvme m.2 2280.

As far as your laptop's storage is concerned is seems to me that it's already an NVME SSD, so no point in upgrading it - unless you want to increase its capacity. Just to be sure you can press keys Windows+Pause -> click "Device Manager" -> double click "Disk Drives" and see if the drive's name has "SSD" in it. If so, you're set.
