As net contributors to the EU we are already paying for- so we get back our own money. Wonderful

Meanwhile, Nicola Sturgeon's move for Scotland to pause Ukrainian refugee sponsorship scheme amid lack of homes: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/11/scotland-ukrainian-refugee-sponsorship-scheme-pause-lack-of-homes

Pausing the scheme would “ensure that those displaced people who are already here, and those who will arrive in the coming months, will be safe, secure and supported for as long as they need, after the dangers they have faced at home”, a government statement said.

    Should Ireland consider something similar?

Small local hotel has 24 rooms and 18 are crammed full of Ukranians no big local welcome, moved in by stealth over night 126 euro per head per night is the rate the hotel is getting. It was a lovely hotel, re furbished & a great family sunday lunch, entertainment and a good bar all now destroyed.

Surely if a local is being refused use of the service this is a very clear case of discrimination?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,199 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

No, it's a private service, they can discriminate all they want and are.

    There you have it.

Talking about it right now. Amendments to The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027

    Another good 5 years minimum.

They won't be in hotels for 5 years. Houses for all.

Integration and Fund being the key words here.

Leo was just on saying we have 100% employment. There's no hotels (hospitality) anymore for tourists as they are all bought up for accommodation for refugees.

So why do we need to integrate these people.

Other than receiving houses and benefits. What are they bringing?

How do hotels survive if filling rooms causes them to be destroyed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,205 ✭✭✭ShamNNspace

Almost the exact same here, large enough county town in Galway, 60 moved in overnight to the only hotel in the centre, what I did notice is that all flags were removed from the front of the hotel save for a small Ukrainian flag, too small for the holder placed in the middle allmost as if they were ashamed of their actions, a real sad state of affairs with the local busybodies, yes those retired ones that are in every town who are well-to-do and with their sons and daughters nicely settled as teachers and Guards and the like along with the out of towners involved in everything from fb groups to tidy towns who can head off to their mortgage free homes of an evening after a hard day virtue signalling , now looking for volunteers well count me out , but one things for sure the hotel under its present ownership will not recieve a red cent of my money... An absolute cod of a country

they are destroyed for the locals, they are in profit great for them but the business that they built up from the locals just dumped over night a giant fcuk you to the locals who had parties weddings drinks dinners there for the last 30 years !!

I've been dipping in and out of this thread for the past few of weeks and as parents of 3 teenagers my wife and I are feeling more than a little anxious about what future Ireland holds for our children. We are both full-time workers, have been contributing for nearly 30 years apiece and know that our children face a very uncertain future with regard to education resources, housing, health services etc. The Irish electorate were not consulted about how our tax is being spent (so frivolously), without any thought for the current or future generations of Irish children. It's all very depressing and very difficult to be hopeful.

Don’t forget that when the refugees get their own homes and the hotelier is looking for your custom again

The Irish electorate were not consulted

Nor should we be. We elect people to make decisions. This is how the govt has always operated

Giving refuge to people fleeing a war is hardly frivolous.

Giving unlimited handouts and freebies to to people fleeing a limited regional conflict (who may not even be coming from that region) and who are travelling across the entire breadth of Europe (and indeed the rest of their own extremely large country) to get here however most certainly is.

Has anyone emailed their local TD regarding this disgrace or is everyone just venting against a wall here?

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

Well as a business it’s full occupancy at full rate and guaranteed income- it’s a no brainer for them

A nice big fat government invoice at the end of every month- that’s how! No questions asked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,568 ✭✭✭✭road_high

100% employment? So why do we still have usc and marginal tax rates pushing 50% above a modest €34k gross salary - I mean if all is as rosy as Leo paints it to be? I certainly ain’t seeing it- are the rest of you?

No.we elect people to make decisions in the best interests of the country and its citizens. Nobody else.

the current and previous government have been acting in derogation of this fact..

Not really the gravy train will end hopefully and then they will be begging the locals to come back ..... & they will give the two fingers. Your core bread & butter business is how you stay in biz for 30 years plus looking after your core business.

“ A good Irish community “ ??what are you saying ? That any family with a non Irish parent are mongrels ? Correct me please if I am wrong . My husband is non Irish , hard working , paid taxes for 40 years here , contributes to the community . Are you actually saying that my kids who have dual nationality are somehow mongrels and somehow less than pure bred Irish

My kids who work hard , pay taxes and pay their own way since they were 16 ?

They all appear to be all for it- so why bother- Carlow Kilkenny constituency here- we have 2 FF, 1 FG, 1 clueless shinner and 1 sandal eating green waste of space-I’ll make my feelings know n at the ballot box. I’ve zero interest in engaging with these people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,568 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Thing is how? How will it end? They’re here for the long haul and there’s nowhere else to put them- hoteliers know this and have the government over a barrel- for the it’s the proverbial “male hay while the sun shines”.

I have, actually a few and Ministers too. Very calm, collected, pointing out serious flaws in the EU Directive.

Enquiried about the Hypocrisy, Two Tier system of supports.

Asked how it was possible for 36 refugees to arrive in my Tiny village, dispersed over three properties (one owner) was their any vetting (young children involved )

Enquired was it true a private clinic set up P/T at a major Midlands hospital as no GP'S in the catchment area could see these Refugees.

Enquired about a private bus service alledgedy being paid for by a government Department

Enquired about the lack of integration, no consultation locally and why local political representatives completely unaware about the Arrival of 36 Refugee's.

Asked were any state agencies involved with their mysterious arrival.

Asked who's paying for the Accommodation.

Asked how is it possible, 10 refugees could be living in one house, wonem and children, one owner, Male and single.

Asked was this a "Temporary" arrangement, given the remoteness of the location.

Asked how was it remotely possible a Tiny P/O was expected to deal with 36 Refugee's collecting SW payments.

    Amongst other perfectly reasonable questions.

Local none party affiliated TD responded and managed to get some clarity after a few weeks. One TD, party affiliated responded, actual came to see me to discuss.

Government TD'S reffered me to numerous Departments /Ministers.

    Government Departments responses,

"We acknowledge receipt of your enquiry and will respond in Due Course" that was 4 weeks ago.

    Hope this answers your question.

Dream come true for the hoteliers. They’re gong to have full rooms even over an Irish winter.

maybe they’ll save that money and give us all cheaper rooms when this is all over

    like **** they will

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,199 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Wishful thinking 😉 as I predicted this not ending any time soon, this is going to cost an absolute fortune.

How many winters - how long is a piece of string? This is a bottomless multi billion euro disaster. It might end when the IMF come back in.

Many of our own on a welfare train as well. Our welfare system is broken, as is our asulym process. This neatly exposes both.
