I love the original but to be honest i think this is actually a better film. I saw it a second time in the cinema and thought was better 2nd time around,
can't remember last time i went twice to a film in cinema, maybe The Dark Knight.
James Tolkan played one of the best characters in the original top gun.
They should have brought him back for a cameo.
Would have been a birthday present, turned 91 last week.
"They should have brought him back for a cameo."
They did... kinda (with Ed Harris)
Can't have charity cameos for everyone in fairness.
I used to watch the original quite a bit when I was younger and, while fully realising it was a cheese-fest, I enjoyed it a lot. However I recently watched it again before Maverick (as I previously mentioned) and it was a bit a struggle to get through it tbh. There's no doubt in my mind, the new one is a much better film mho.
There are already talking about making Top Gun 3.
After making over a Billion dollars at the box office they probably need a very good reason NOT to make Top Gun 3.
I wouldnt be interested for sure and i was gagging for this film since last year. It was a one off film and I dont want more of it.
But you would still go and see it. That’s what matters.
Im sure a % will and it may even be profitable, I couldnt see myself bothering though, the itch was scratched. Military airplane movies are very constrained and at this stage you could almost write the films once you hear about it. Apart from Cruise the rest of the characters were blocks of wood and utterly forgettable
The Maverick editor, Eddie Hamilton, is on the latest Empire Podcast; we've all heard or read they filmed a colossal amount of footage but he stated there it was just shy of 814 hours! To paraphrase what he said, Apocalypse Now (also famous for a huge amount of footage) was ~1.5 million feet of film; Maverick was the equivalent of 4.5 million feet - astounding 😲
He was really interesting and as you would expect an excellent film knowledge. The story about Colin Firth originally being cast in X-Men first class was interesting.
Only used the 10/10 shots...and it showed in the film to be fair!
Agreed!
Apparently Lewis Hamilton was offered a role as one of the pilots in this film but he had to turn it down.
I can't imagine how that would of worked with Lewis in Top Gun it would have changed the whole dynamic of the film.

Searched Top Gun yesterday to see if there was any news articles with updates on streaming dates only to see it's still in some cinemas. Jaysis I'm getting impatient now, they've had Memorial Day, 4th of July and Father's Day and are well over $1bn so I think it's times to get it online. Looking at some comments online the people still seeing it are ones seeing it for the 5th or 6th time!
Yeah, it's still flying along. Last I checked it entered the top 50 and I wondered if it could make the top 40...
@Theboinkmaster called it on that one! 🙂
It's now 13th in the top 50 Top Lifetime Grosses, $1378m worldwide ($673m USA, $704m World):
For the next positions, it would need about:
into top 10 - 138m
11th - 73m
12th - 25m
i think they are saying digital editions available august 23rd? Cruise had a veto on when it could be released so i guess he wants us all in the cinema.. it will be interesting to compare the cinema experience to the home experience.. its definitely a movie that shines in the cinema
I hope we get extended aerial footage when it comes out on blu ray.
Those scenes up in the air with the advanced fighters... I just don't know how they'd work as well on a smaller screen.
Wasn't a big fan of the original, and this was practically a retread of that with a passing of the torch to the next generation. Cheesy and corny but the flight scenes were very well shot. It could have been something better, maybe a bit darker, but I don't think Cruise wants to do much acting anymore beyond playing Tom Cruise in collaborations with his buddy writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, and flashing that smile. I'd love to see Cruise do a David Fincher movie, like how he used to work with PT Anderson, Scorsese, Michael Mann etc but it seems like the days of him making brave choices are long over. I can't say I was disappointed by the movie because it's exactly what I expected it to be. I'd prefer a Days of Thunder sequel tbh.
Aug 23 in the US. Haven't seen a date for us yet.
Sky cinema have it in for 5 days time
Cruise will likely make over 200 million from this
jaysis, thankfully that didn't happen
I'm picturing something like this
Just watched it on TV there, definitely not as good as in cinema. The surround sound wasn't as good as I expected. Still a great movie though!
Finally got around to watching this last night.
Thoroughly enjoyable film, visually it looked outstanding.
Kosinskis films are always beautifully shot. The practical effects are a stark, stunning contrast to the seemingly endless stream of Marvel-type CGI drivel which Hollywood has been churning out for far too long.
Some nice nostalgia, and the soundtrack was nice.
The Final mission was a bit far fetched but thats nit picking.
They should have released it on digital and physical media at the same time.
Was that just a cameo or did beckham have a big role that film ?
Just a cameo, only in it for that scene.
is it still in the cinema?
