Motions of no confidence in the government from Sf are becoming a bore. They are turning a serious mechanism into a cartoon caper due to the overuse of it to score pity points and jab the finger.
Money is not the same when it comes to government spending. I'll explain, there's money the rest of us earn and owe and then there's government throwing numbers around and wasting. Look at the NCH. Look at the varying cost of the rail link to the airport. Look at MM pulling 3bn out of his arse pocket for refugees. Then we have the latest 25 year lease agreement we'll be paying investors for social housing. So, IMO, 3bn or more toward the mica won't raise any eyebrows.
Nice way to send the government off on their summer holidays.

And as homeowners people understand that they shouldn't be out a single cent as this was a government (which is ultimately responsible for the regulatory scheme that failed) incompetence. I don't claim they would win seats but they would get enough votes to cause concern for sitting government TD's.
That thrashing around is on cost only. Mica campaigners seem to want 100% in all cases and hang the cost, that is unsustainable. We are all after what matters to us at election time, that's human and the empathy in this case is driven by just how much of a bill we can tolerate.
Even if there are candidates in Donegal they will need to have some level of ability about them. Pretty much anywhere else they are very likely to lose deposits.
Those who have an 'I'm alright Jack' attitude (and there are plenty) will not care but I think there would be enough with empathy to have an effect. The government are thrashing around on this issue for a reason, they know this.
And in Donegal you could be right, maybe even in Mayo but not in Laois, Wicklow, Waterford or anywhere else. And the price tag matters a hell a lot. All politics are local as they say and mica is just not local enough.
How much do think a voter in Dublin North Central cares about a place they have probably never been to or about a problem they may not understand all that well and where people may get up to €400K per house?
It's called empathy, Irish people in the main have that and the price tag would not matter. To build your home and be let down by regulators who fucked up, can be understood by everyone. McHugh knows this, that's why he is gone.
The €3bn price tag would resonate far more. It's a single issue and if it were a Save our Hospital that would be more cross-community and could get a few votes. For many people, rightly or wrongly, mica is a very expensive problem in Donegal. It's not going to influence their votes in most other parts of the country.
I disagree. As I said this issue resonates with people who struggled hard to pay for their homes, they would get support across the country.

€3bn says they actually wouldn't. As an issue it would only resonate in those parts of the country where it is a widespread problem and that final bill does away with any other argument. Hard to gauge the effect even there, especially with competition from other opposition parties. As others have suggested Donegal might be a good place but there'd be intense SF competition.

Being from Donegal I would say anyone who is going to vote number 1 for a Mica candidate wouldn’t give a preference to any ff or fg whereas they probably would for SF, be more inclined to anyway.
In the scenario where a mica candidate runs, 3 sf, 1 mica, and/or independent(Pringle) or 1 FF is the most likely outcome IMO.
The word is a shinner might lose out because of a split of the votes with the mica party. I think another one issue party will go the way of one in four.
