The Russians have a lot of air-defence in layers - so you'd be loosing a fair few planes what-ever ,-
Also the Ukrainians have lost a lot of facilities , runways , maintenance refueling ,and munitions - so even if they got more planes from somewhere, they'd still struggle to put them in the air ..
Pilots , they may have pilots but have they had the flight hours recently...
Then you're still up against Russian fighters ...
It'd be great for them to get a shot load of f16 or grippen ,but it'd probably take 6 months to a year to train up their pilots and ground crews
It's interesting how we never see Putin meeting the Russian public. It's very rare to even see him in the same room as a couple of them, never mind up close.

I don't myself think it has anything at all to do with the west's support for Ukraine. Russia has a long-standing tactic of bombing civilian targets and killing people indiscriminately. Sinking Ferries shooting down Airliners ...Syria or Chechnya or indeed wherever a Russian went its the same thing... blanket Terrorism.

Most likely. Also as others have written he’s probably afraid of attempted assassination. Kind of goes to show how the other Heads of State can meet & greet at the plane as well as enjoy a traditional welcoming-snack, whereas Putin has to keep everyone out of stabbing distance and all food is now potential death.
