If being an unaligned country with a large army is no deterrent to Putin's ambitions is it time for ROI to join Nato?
You keep ignoring our legal obligations, regarding other EU states, Francie.
We voted for this.
Are you a Democrat or not?
Anything that can actually cause harm?
Yes Ireland Aided the UK in WW2 with Troops for their army. Not very neutral.
Not politically neutral and not militarily aligned and neutral in war or conflict. Jeez Louise!
Training people to disarm IEDS allows them to create them also.
We are obliged to aid and assist Mark...read the fecking thing. If we wish to join a military defence force of the EU we need to have a referendum...it's called democracy.
You are suggesting that in a war in the EU we can send troops into battle...and you ask me if I am a democrat???? 😁
peacekeepers are involved in war and conflict next. I already linked what peacekeepers can do. Did we decide if jadotville was a military action yet.
Gosh this really is a problem now.
'Peacekeepers' have always been allowed to defend themselves and to take actions to preserve the peace. They are on the side of peace and not on any side in whatever conflict/war they are intervening in. Jeez Louise again.
So peacekeeper are not Neutral they have a side good to see were making ground. If they were Neutral they would stand between both sides and Enforce the peace on both.
The comment about the north was a low blow I apologise.
Which is what I said:
They are on the side of peace and not on any side in whatever conflict/war they are intervening in.
I.E. They are neutral.
Sorry I misread apologies.
No, we are obliged to come to the aid of an EU member, this includes military aid.
Therefore we are not militarily neutral.
If you don't agree with this, then you are not a Democrat.
I agree that we are obliged to send aid and assistance that is within our power to send.
Are you saying that in the event of a war within the EU that the government can send troops to fight on a side in that conflict/war?
At the moment we could send personnel if needed. Also why it would be a good idea to increase the budget to allow us you help your European partners and allies. Weapons wont be the Issue it will be personnel in an EU conflict.
Here's the reality we could increase our military spending 10x and we wouldn't have a force capable of standing up to anyone that has the ability to project power to our little Island anyway, ironically we d be looking to the UK and US for assistance, the latter already uses our airports at free will anyway and the UK routinely defends our airspace.
And even if we dont join if the UK is attacked or under threat its instantly our problem aswell because the likelihood that any force that somehow manages to take the UK is just going go "oh Irelands neutral lets leave them alone" is highly unlikely. We dont have like NATO but the reality is that's the side of the fence we are on, our neutrality is nonsense.
This includes military aid. Anyway, good to see you now acknowledge that Ireland is not militarily neutral.
You didn't read the link I gave you, did you? Because there is a clause just about that.
Well, so far you are not denying that you support the conspiracy theories that it was someone other than the Russians who were responsible for Salisbury, so I think the audience can draw its win conclusions about your relative sanity on the issue.
In that scenario I would suggest Ireland mobilise any able bodied men go to the UK and fight. If a power was able to bleed the UK dry it would be a very very bad day for Ireland. Regardless of anyone's political affiliation. It's pragmatic at the end of the day. The devil you know is better than the one you don't.
NATO ain't happening for Ireland. The people don't want it. Anyone move otherwise is treason.
This country would be wiped out very quickly if sh*t hits the fan. Let's not go getting involved in stuff we don't need to, putting a target on our back in the process.
People are great at virtue signalling for all types of things, but quickly change their tune when the bill has to be paid. Same dopes calling for a "green agenda" a few years ago are now crying about the price of fuel and energy. Similarly, saying we should join military coalitions is all well and good until the puppet politicians come knocking in need of cannon fodder. That'll be you and your kids, not them and theirs. Be very careful what you wish for.
Again, anybody who wants to get involved in the Russia/Ukraine war is free to go over and fight. What's stopping them?
What a load of bollox. They’re literally threatening peace on this island again, f them.
Good man. Go off to die for warmongering elites and puppet politicians who'll never see a battlefield themselves.
Pleb cannon fodder always required. Thank you for your service.
Join NATO: No! Níl! Niet!
Great and when the next big war happens and the global coalition of democratic liberal states are running out of machine gun fodder we can conscript a generation of young Irish people to sacrifice. We are a neutral country despite what MM wants. I'd love to know what shiny glittery prize Ursula has dangled in front of him in exchange for signing away Ireland's neutrality. Make no mistake about it, while this country has huge problems MM will push to sign away our neutrality before he's out on his arse. His career in Ireland is over.
Would ya reckon the lads that went and died in WW2 were "pleb Cannon fodder" hopefully in modern war we can allocate designated safe spaces for the "Woke Elite" that are simply above war.
Being neutral is easy when your on an Island between the UK and the USA.
The good auld I'm alright jack, **** everyone else, should we not be looking to play our part in stopping attrocities tbh it's quite embarrassing we were neutral in WW2.
I'm afraid the days of sitting on our arses nice and safe behind our neutrality while other nations go out and fight for us might be coming to an end. Don't think other nations will accept it either especially since we are in the EU. Why should they contribute if we can just sit there nice and safe and do nothing?
Can't have your cake and eat it too altho that's what alot of the soft **** on this island are used to now so I can only imagine the crying that will be done should they have to endure abit of hardship rather that just watching it on tv drinking there lattes and driving there posh cars.
A clause that says nothing about sending fighting troops and includes the phrase 'within their power'?
We won't be sending fighting troops anywhere without ending our policy of neutrality.
So you did lie again about my 'conclusion' and spun it for your own ends.
Ok,
What other 'nations' have expressed an opinion on our neutrality?
Genuine question as the UN and I believe NATO, have said they respect our policy.
The word neutrality is not commited to paper in in our constitutional or legal framework. Have a dig, you won't find it
Martin is completely correct, and as you observed, it is a policy. And the government of the day is empowered to change policy.
