If I heard Patrick gowing from teagasc properly today he said it's costing 2200 euro per cow and her replacement to keep them on farm this year. That's before wages, interest payments, tax, etc. 220k for 100 cow herd. I'd say the days of the poor performers are limited.

Europe signed of on it in the first instance,I don't think a Irish court can circumvent a EU policy directive either, would take years of legal wrangling to get it to a European Court to I reckon, the 220kgs n /ha and the top rate band of 106kgs cow basically means a 40 ha block can carry around 80 cows going forward unless additional land is found, the gas thing I'm finding is co-ops especially Glanbia reckoning this additional land is freely available to maintain/increase cow numbers and the appetite is their from farmers to pay the stupid rental prices you would need to pay to secure it
Why are taisce doing this though, what can they gain by it I presume the government followed eu directive and the dog on the street know that derogation is on its last legs, so it's kind of stupid/waste of money really
The whole thing is a joke. A 40 Ha block can carry 80 cows but if you have outside blocks or maps or no bps 40 Ha can carry 200 cows. And the teagasc signpost program is promoting MP stocking rates of 3+/Ha.
It's only the brave and the foolish that will be left farming full time at this rate.
