The Right religious conservatives and who knows who else have today overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the US.
Will this now embolden anti abortionists in this country to fight back?
The US is a cold place for women now.
LOLs - they're flying out of Cali to Texas in their droves, so much that they thought Biden would flip TX in 2020. What is driving them to leave?
Your sarcastic radar is broken.
Can't afford a baby! Yet today in the streets of Dublin (and other major cities across the western world) we have corporates pouring millions into pride marches through sponsorships and the happy clappy liberals will adore the spectacle as they amass mega profits all while the majority of the workers go paycheque to paycheque to survive.
Not ready for a child! Another bollox argument - we're "empowering" women to think career first, family later, resulting in women leaving it much later in life to give birth and finally give in to her natural instinct to reproduce. That leaving it later bit is vital - it increases risk of the child having disabilities, ADHD and a whole other cohort of issues that in turn put pressure on our health services to cope with - a subject the health services are still learning about. Add to that the government of today will not give two hoots about it either - they will import youth from other nations to make up the shortfall while they collect three income taxes - the father, the mother and the childminder.
Not ready to be a single mother. This is the elephant in the room IMHO and seeing as we're discussing America - where there isn't as much of a social security net for single mothers as there is here in Ireland. What are the driving forces behind American men abandoning American women (or vice-versa) they engaged with and resulted in a pregnancy? Despite the more liberal approach to sex education that has come on in recent decades (some of it very welcomed) the green shoots of evidence surrounding reduced unwanted pregnancies are few and far between.
Finally - if you are of the opinion that children in an "impoverished home" are discard-able through abortion - then it's only reasonable of others to judge you as engaging in class warfare. The poor should be eliminated by encouraging them not to breed. It would serve you well to be reminded that the poor down through history have broke their backs to provide you with the country and lifestyle you enjoy today, warts and all.
Why is it not okay to ask anyone such questions? As long as there is anonymity of course. Surely, even the hard core liberals are interested in finding out why abortions are happening so government policy can be adjusted to target a reduction in the so proclaimed option of last resort.
Biden - another beta male.
I sincerely hope your belief that women who have abortions do so because it's the best decision for them also extends to men who walk away that they do so because it's the best decision for them. All things being equal and that.
Like QR codes to access flights, bars and restaurants and even in some cases to retain a job - where have we seen privacy like that stripped away before, seems very familiar but I just cant quite put my finger on such an example.
But women are the ones that get pregnant. If a man decides he wants to have sex there's absolutely no risk for him that he will get pregnant and carry a child. For women this is simply not true. So if a woman decides not to have sex there will be no pregnancy regardless whether the man is willing to have sex or not. Its a choice the woman has to make every time because the difference between her and the man is she can get pregnant, he cant.
A bit whataboutery but a reasonably valid argument imo. I never agreed with the vaccine mandate in the US. Thought it was an incredibly dumb move by Biden, in a country like the US of all places.
I never said there was.
You said guns were protected.
"I am coming from the POV that each school shooting is wrong. And that if American gun owners were really responsible they would do something to increase gun control. If these are the same people who want abortion clinics closed then they are hypocritical ."
While I would agree that there's probably some hypocrisy there it's an immaterial point to the issue here. If they were consistent in their views on abortion and gun control I don't imagine a pro-choice person would be any more on board with them regarding abortion.
You said "based on social media..." and I was providing an example of the clear nonsense people came out with "based on social media" in the wake of the 2016 election. For everyone looking to move out of e.g. Texas there's plenty of dude-bros and ladies willing to take a chance on not getting raped/being able to go out of state in the fairly small chance of needing an abortion so that they can retire 5-10 years earlier. It's baffling to me after the last decade of seeing what America really is that people still don't seem to get it.
he won once and hit the post the second time so I dunno they may feel third time is a charm?
I wish he would go away tbh for many reasons, but he can take a lot of the "credit" for this ruling which is what will be enough to win a GOP primary and then with the electoral college who knows?
Yeah the likes of DeSantis and Youngkin and fellow red governors in swing states will always be reluctant to imitate the most draconian bills that the red states have so that's a small relief for those states. The southern red states are very depressing because their governors/senators for the most part can govern as how they see fit without worrying about electoral blowback.
True but I did describe such procedures correctly earlier in the thread. Other posters were referring to said procedures as medical and I went along with that nomenclature. Why don't you go and have a pop at them as well?
The numbers you've targeted (emigration to Canada) don't correlate to travel/moving between states. I also don't track why there would have been massive shuffling between moving states over the result of a presidential election. Reversal of Roe meanwhile much more plainly makes this an issue directly impacted by which state and jurisdiction you live in.
Oof, a thousand extra a year. At that kind of rate you could see dozens of people leaving some of the red states.
..
Got a link to something more recent showing that it actually happened?
Maybe if you think about it for a bit ?
You are coming from the POV that all abortions are wrong ...and that American gun owners are responsible , that they have no accountability for the murder of actual children by disaffected youths or nutjobs with an ak47 .
I am coming from the POV that each school shooting is wrong. And that if American gun owners were really responsible they would do something to increase gun control. If these are the same people who want abortion clinics closed then they are hypocritical .
That was my point in essence .
I recognise your opinion but you won't be changing mine either .
Your numbers are off, but yes there's been an uptick.
Aye the blue states are still recovering from the massive depopulation they suffered in late 2016 into '17 as millions of people moved to Canada.
The right to not be vaccinated
The right to ingest narcotics as an adult
The right to stop being pregnant
Body autonomy seems to be a on again off again thing with Americans of a type.
To those of us that grew up in the 70s there is a marked difference, to us the 70s are closer to today than the 50s were to the 70s
A medical abortion is when you take pills as opposed to a surgical abortion. You are talking about a medically necessary abortion. A medical abortion and a medically necessary abortion are not the same thing.
Laid what out?
You popped up and defined how a medical abortion is defined, I then posted the circumstances in which it's required.
Why should I delete anything?
I have already layed it out for you.
What mistake? I was trying to be helpful.
Then you need to edit your post and erase your mistake
Either way, at that stage of pregnancy, there is only way for the fetus to be removed. I can't believe people are so stupid to believe that loads of women are putting themselves through the trauma of labour and giving birth to a dead baby just because they changed their mind and don't want it anymore. It doesn't happen. End of story. The only reason late term abortions take place is because the baby won't survive anyway, or maybe in a few cases, the mother. Those are medically necessary and hugely traumatic for the parents. I think I can safely say that over the history of legal abortions, the amount of women who have chosen to terminate a late stage pregnancy because they don't feel like having a kid anymore is miniscule to non existent.
what’s the point of backing him if he won’t win. I’m not sure the republicans have anyone that could win. Their only hope is if the democrats self sabotage.
Based on a lot of conversations and activity I'm seeing IRL and in my local social media, I can safely project the southern/antiabortion states are going to begin feeling the effects of 'brain drain' over the next several quarters at least. Definitely talk around of moving to safer jurisdictions for women.
For better or worse its because of him their was an extra 3 supreme court "pro life" justices and this is probably the biggest win for the conservative movement in decades. Those who constantly pointed out his flaws regarding his affairs, his clear lack of interest in religion personally always missed the point, the Evangelicals knew all this but were behind him because he promised this and he has delivered his part of the deal.
It probably ensues he gets the GOP 2024 nomination now, all he has to do is to say " I overturned this" and nobody else will be able to compete. De Santis opened up Florida ? So what in comparison.
