Number26/N26 Mastercard/Account now for Irish Residents

As of today www.number26.eu is opening their accounts (Mastercard debit/online banking account with IBAN) for Irish residents.

It has no fees and all management is done via an app, there is a webpage but for some authentications you need the app.

Verification of ID is done via a video chat (which takes pictures of the id documents too).

There are some spending limits (2000€ atm withdraw a week, 4000€ card spending in a month) but it's a free prepaid debit card with it's own IBAN and full account features (direct debit included).

Takes about 7 minutes to open, easy way to a German bank account.

You could consider using Curve as your physical card, attached to N26. Would save you €10 on a new physical N26 card. That's what I do and it works flawlessly.

Has anyone successfully switched their eir Direct Debit to N26 via posting in the SEPA Direct Debit mandate? I sent it in early May and got zero correspondence back and online in myEir account it is still reflecting old Direct Debit details.

I did, but it was summer 2020.

From what I recall, I didn't get any notice it was successful until the payment was taken from my N26 account.

Maybe. Will see in a few days. Online in my Eir still shows the old DD though although maybe it cannot be reflected in their online system. There customer care are woeful and just tell me they don't accept N26 not familiar with the rules or the paper mandate.

Yes only a manager might understand how direct debits work. I found one who did after ringing about 15 times. If you have any issues with the direct debit once it is finally setup you will have to keep calling until you get a manager.

I took them to ComReg for refusing to accept N26 / Revolut SEPA Direct Debits and they do take tham and have to take them. Send your info to directdebit@eir.ie They have a team who look after this.

Was trying to set up a space on my wife's account. Have they removed this now for free accounts? I have 2 spaces I set up a few years ago. We're both on the free account.

Moved all my DD's to N26 last week, now to play the waiting game and see if it works at the start of the month

The move was fine with every provider/employer except Vodafone who wanted an IE or GB IBAN to be entered online. I could have called them oveer the phone with the DE one but instead just entered the card details online so it will be an online payment transaction instead of a direct debit

If you go into a Vodafone store, they can change it to a direct debit with your DE IBAN. Been there done that.

I didn't make the trip especially for that, the shop is just in my local shopping centre where I regularly have to go anyway. I don't think I was longer than a couple of minutes in the shop.

Still outrageous and blatant IBAN discrimination which is utterly unacceptable and outright unprofessional from a large multinational company, showing gross incompetency. There. That's how I really feel 😂

Just a heads up I upgraded my account to Smart and they sent me out a new card, which I believed would be in addition to my existing card as 2 physical cards are permitted.

However they neglected to tell me that my existing card would be cancelled, I was puzzled when certain transactions were refused, eventually I twigged what the issue was.

I've had to update a load of subscriptions now inc Netflix Turkey which was a pain to update.

A simple email would have sufficed "Please note that once you activate your new card the old one is no longer valid".

Other than getting wages paid into N26 how do you top up your account without having to pay a bank an international transfer from IE IBAN to the DE IBAN? I would be transferring € from AIB what would the fee be for that?

You would do an international transfer from AIB. As it would be in euro there is no fee unless you pay for urgent transfer.

There you have it. There is a charge on every transaction. When your salary goes into your AIB C/A there is a charge. Thats the way banking is going.

Has anyone ran into any issues with getting paid wages into an N26 account? e.g. mortgage application, tax, day to day banking issues etc

Like many, very tempted to switch over from KBC to them for all the usual current account stuff.

Probably will just chance it anyways, i'd loathe to go back to BOI and AIB are worse

I'm slowly moving everything over. No issues so far but you need to fill in a paper direct mandate for most companies. A few things left to do and then it's the wages.

SSE airtricity have a backlog of DD mandates they need to go through so even though I filled the form out and got it back to them at the start of the month it won't take effect until next month. All other suppliers of funds in and out seemed fine

Of course! N26 has a bank's license much longer than a Revolut. It's with Germany.

My employer tells me they can't pay me into my N26 account (today was meant to be the first day) as they use the old Account Number/Sort code system when sending wages

I'm thinking I can work around this by giving them my credit union account details and setting up a standing order from there to N26, but before I do, does anybody have a better workaround?

tried to withdraw cash from one of those Euronet ATMs yesterday and it told me my card wasn't valid at the machine. Went to an AIB ATM and it worked fine - anyone come across this? I've only very rarely taken cash out of my N26 account in the past, this was the first time I've had any issues.

That's illegal. Your employer must pay you to any EU EUR IBAN of your choice. It's called IBAN discrimination if they say they won't or they can't.
