The Right religious conservatives and who knows who else have today overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the US.
Will this now embolden anti abortionists in this country to fight back?
The US is a cold place for women now.
"Will this now embolden anti abortionists in this country for fight back?
I really hope so. The ugliest and most terrifying scene I've ever witnessed took place down at dublin castle the day abortion was made legal in this country. People literally dancing with delight at the prospect of the murder of innocent children. The people leading this country at the time were there, up on a stage celebrating.........The level of wickedness and evil at work in the hearts of those who would celebrate murder is beyond comprehension. But now it seems the pendulum has swung back in favor of goodness and away from what is evil and I hope that people in this country who see the real face of abortion and what it actually is, will stand up for what is just and right.
The US system isn't a fair referendum, it is now being put back to states governments where many are so ridiculously gerrymandered that it is nearly impossible for those who would be pro-choice to win enough seats to stop abortion bans.
When there is corrupt, minority rule people throughout history haven't liked it. The people of Dublin and Cork would not be happy if every county had 2 votes as a key part of legislating so that the tiny populations of Leitrim and Roscommon had the same vote with a tiny fraction of the population. Out of all the supreme court justices who came to this decision only 1 was chosen by a president who won the popular vote. The US system is broken, that is why people are frustrated.
Centre parties aren’t fascists. Only right wing militaristic ultra nationalist loons like the GOP qualify. You don’t need big govt you need laws and a militarized police and an oligarchy. G. O. P. Vermin.
Abortion has not been banned in the US, they are only giving back to the states the democratic right to have their own abortion law as opposite to having a federal law.
it's the same as we already have in Europe, relax
That will be such a comfort to everyone who resides in a state that just banned abortion.
are there any?
and if/when a state bans abortion, how difficult is it for a woman to travel over to another state to get an abortion? California will probably sell Abortion week-ends all inclusive up until 9 months
You absolutely do need big government, it is what Fascists/Communists/Socialists all have in common....first you need soft control over the population thru media, corporations, institutions and academia and perhaps an army of quasi uniformed violent thugs on the streets to enforce it all...it's why in Italy they have a saying, "there are two kinds of fascists, fascists and anti fascists!!", they'd know!
Laughable - in Florida Republicans are banning maths books and telling people what they can and cant say about their own lives.
It is an absolute myth that the Republicans despise big government, they just despise big government when it doesn't align to their ideology (the exact same as the Democrats)
Yes society really is crumbling. What is happening in the US will return some sanity
It is a federal system. You simply couldn't run a continent size country of 300 million the way you run a small country of 5 million people.
In the EU, there are also votes in which Ireland's 5 million population has the same weight as 80 million in Germany.
It's absurd to compare Dublin and Leitrim to Florida and Vermont.
Absolute self serving GOP lies.
Laughable indeed!!! Florida Republicans are banning CRT including texts that incorporate the theory into school books and Teaching Gender Ideology to kids....the Democrats are losing elections at a fairly rapid rate across the US over the last 18 months for similar reasons.
Florida is the ultimate swing state in US elections, the fact that the current Governor is on course for a unprecedented win this coming November should be putting the chills into the Democrat Party.
I've even seen Irish media describe him as an ethno nationalist, only a matter of time before the usual gang of posters on here start doing the same!!!
That's going to work out well
The Supreme Court has gutted voting rights and allowed the states to become so gerrymandered that it guarantees the abortions will be banned in about half the states.
Also, the 'relax' absolutely hilarious given what has happened over the last few years. 'Relax' is basically what Bernie said when Hillary brought up the supreme court being at risk in 2016 when he was doing everything to undermine her. 'Relax' is what people said when Trump was elected. 'Relax' is what people said when the GOP were packing the court and pointing to the judges were swearing under oath that Roe v Wade is settled law. Now Republicans are calling for same-sex marriage and other gay rights to be returned to the States to decide and for a federal ban on abortion and you're throwing out 'relax' again...
In Florida they banned maths books that contained Critical Race Theory, which is illegal in schools.
To avoid the ban, just print maths books that contains maths instead of ideological messages
You would think the fact that at least two of Donald Trump’s nominees lied under oath about their views on Roe in order to secure confirmation would have some consequences...but in the US I doubt it!
Basket case of a country.
Oh jebus, not this again.
Firstly repealing the 8th did not introduce abortion.
Secondly, if you think people were celebrating and dancing in the street because they could now "murder innocent children" you obviously did not have any real understanding of what was actually happening and the significance of it went right over your head.
Looks like you still don't.
Actually I just have an interest in WW2 documentaries.
oh grow up ffs
thats not what the comparison was at all. if by the original poster's logic (cant remember username at this stage) was that abortion is murder, then surely miscarriage also is, or at least involuntary manslaughter?
It shows given the puerile understanding
Thankfully most people in this country see through this holier than thou bollocks.
Maybe they were expected to do well because of the economy/Inflation, but now this ruling will gave the Democrats a bounce, because even in (some) Red states they wont take kindly to removing 50 years of women's rights and healthcare provisions. I wouldn't be as confident they will do as well now.
The majority of Americans nationally support women's right to choose on abortion and the only way the GOP and hardline conservative christians get to sneak in changes like this, is to pack the SCOTUS with right leaning justices.
I took a quick look at a few of the banned examples, those making CRT a thing are thick as sh*t and need to disappear into the nearest available safe space. It's pretty hilarious that the thickos are threatened by it.
9 months?!...absolute codswallop.
The Republican senators mistresses might be able to afford to fly to another state for an abortion...once again poorer people will be massively more affected. But hey...land of the free and all that bollocks.
Indeed. The Catholic church has well and truly seen to that in Ireland...the mask slipped entirely (if it was even on in the first place).
Nah, they all have guns.
The only thing absurd about it is that the Irish example doesn't come even close to the level of minority rule that is involved in the US Dublin is 17 times the size of Leitrim while the difference between the state with the biggest population and the smallest in the US is 78 times.
It is far more absurd to compare the US government to the EU - they are completely different in structure and power. Where is a bunch of smaller nations holding the power to nominate supreme court judges in the EU who can at a whim demand nations to fund religious schools, tell them they cant restrict open carry of guns, and to take away rights of minority groups?
So it is your view then that Florida Republicans are banning Maths and not math books that contain elements of CRT?
None of the books contained Critical Race Theory. If you disagree with this fact please provide evidence (I doubt you can explain what CRT even is).
Even then it is only 'illegal' because the Republicans passed a law that tried to control school books - controlling the content of school books is big government in action.
It's unlikely there will be much of a Democrat bounce, if any. The ruling was leaked nearly two months ago, and Biden & the party's poll ratings have only declined since. The leak made today's ruling something of an anti-climax.
The Texas law became national news last September and Democrats tried to use it in the November elections, but they ended up losing the Virginia governor's race and almost lost the governor's race in New Jersey. Polls in Virginia showed that abortion was the number one issue for more people who voted Republican than Democrat, even though the state leans blue.
