The Right religious conservatives and who knows who else have today overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the US.
Will this now embolden anti abortionists in this country to fight back?
The US is a cold place for women now.
That's very unlike an Irish TV journo to point out the failings of Mr Obama
I think the majority in the western world would not consider abortion killing hence why most countries have some abortion rights. Why should i respect someone removing rights from women?
No, I never said that. If it was banned like the person that I was replying to stated that it was, it would be banned on a federal level, which it has not been. They weren't speaking about what happens in individuals states, which you well know.
Seeing how divided the US is now, were this were to happen and Trump re-elected in 2024, I could see liberal states consider seceding from the union.
The American people voted for Trump knowing full well the consequences for the courts in to the future. This outcome is the democratic one, like it or not.
It took every political chip they had that year to pass the Affordable Care Act. If you'll recall more recently last year how long basic infrastructure package spending debate dragged on for, that things can take a long time to pass if they pass at all, and it consumes obscene amounts of congressional bandwidth. They decided the healthcare was the more important hill to die on.
The 8th amendment made sure that this was dealt with properly here, ensuring that the legislation had consent of the people.
Without it, I'd be fairly certain our SC would have had its own Roe v Wade in the early 90's.
Yes, giving the right to life back to the unborn is truly sickening - I also hope someday a feminist will be attracted to me if I keep churning out these statements.
It’s killing a human, there is no doubt about that so consideration is irrelevant. I didn’t say murder as that is a very different definition to killing which is just ending life.
so yes, regardless of the decision, a groups rights are removed.
Who you wish to try attract is your own business, as is a woman's Right to abortion and freedom to choose.
The do nothing President.
Ah now. Obama and Clinton were against gay marriage. It's hardly unique to trump.
Was this ruling started by Trump as President?
Abortion rights,dont fall under healthcare?🤔
The bloke had a mandate, clear majority to undertake massive reform, and achived nowhere near enough to justify the esteem he is held in
Minority rule....
He made sure to appoint judges to the supreme court that would rule on it the way he wanted
Tide has gone out on liberialism, its teetering on collaspe due to the diaster it has caused worldwide
I've no dog in the fight when it comes to abortion, personally I don't like the idea of killing an unborn child however I ain't going to tell someone else how to live, hence I abstained from voting here.
However I just want to ask what you mean by right to choose? Because yes that applies here and in a lot of other countries but not in the US. (Their fucked up systems is another discussion).
I totally understand that the US is a federal union and this will apply on a state by state basis, but the basic point is that they are removing rights which have been in place for the last 50 years (which is a bizarre direction of travel).
trump put 3 conservative justices on the court and swung it conservative.
tbf, McConnell is the mastermind here. He recognised that the GOP had to play the long game and get as many federal judges and supreme court justices in place as possible.
this will allow them to pass all sorts of regressive laws and reinterpret existing laws to fit their backwards worldview.
under his eye....
Never a truer word spoken in advance of today's ruling.....

Gonna be very weird if Supreme Court ends a constitutional right to obtain an abortion next week, saying it should be left to the States to decide, right after it just imposed a constitutional right to concealed carry of firearms, saying it cannot be left to the States to decide
Hopefully we'll see our recent changes in abortion law reversed soon, outright ban across the board ideally.
Not seeing why this ruling makes such an outcome a scintilla more likely
Can we finally stop pretending that the Western conservatives end game is basically the same as the Taliban, albeit a Christian branded version of fascism?
.m
If anyone believed it was a child pregnant women would get child support. And if Republicans cared about the unborn then they wouldn't have the worst stats for maternity deaths.
We will get to the point, as in we will witness that point in history.
But you knew that.
We may also get to a point where the King of Saudi is standing up in the UN chastising the US for their human rights abuses.
Ah the human race, can't be accused of being boring anyway.
Child is probably the incorrect nomenclature, can we say human?
The position of the other side must be respected.
No it does not.
I will never, ever have even the tiniest modicum of respect for what is an anti-woman position that results in women being denied automony over their own bodies and basic health care - or by extension, anyone who holds the view that a woman is of lesser importance than a foetus.
I draw a line there.
Liberals after Trump attempted to subvert democracy = "Trump must burn"
Liberals after Roe v Wade democratically decided = "Democracy must burn"
republicans are pro-birth.
as soon as the baby is born, they'll throw you some bootstraps and tell you to get fu*ked
if they really cared about children, they wouldnt be trying to defund public education, they'd pass legislation to help families and single-parents with child rearing costs etc.
but they're not interested in that.
