Terrible loss of life, but to me clearly self defense.
I'm very relieved for the accused.
I hope you apologized to them after.
One born every minute…
Most people value their lives a bit more. Many innocent people are beaten to death, how do you know when the beating from the teenagers will stop. Rather the attacker than victim killed.
youd whack em with your keyboard I presume
Sorry what like? Id rather take a broken nose and teeth then stabbing a teenager to death? Hows that ludicrous?
Hahaha
Indeed i did!
Is carrying a knife not an offence? That being said these guys were being attacked all over Dublin but holding a knife is a potential risk.
In the UK they clamped down on all of that knife wielding with mixed results.
As to compensation for being in prison until acquitted - I doubt it.
Just because you are found innocent doesn't mean you get compensation. The state can argue it had enough evidence to take a case.
Did the state leave evidence out or misled the court - No.
The way our justice system works is a jury of your peers decides not the DPP
He was held because he was a flight risk. He won't get compensation
The old north inner city standard 150 + convictions "poor divil broken home" no doubt.
I don't think the injuries would be negotiated in advance.
Its ludicrous because the people being attacked rightly feared for their lives given the history of recent fatal violence in the area.
If a person went on a killing spree of these feral youth gangs the people on here would think its justified, this is the level of hatred your dealing with here. Not too distant from how the way people who commit mass shooting sprees in the US, feel justified. Its like revenge for them.
If they were being attacked thats more reason that he was holding a knife for intent.
Worse even. My phone.
There is something seriously wrong with people who refuse to defend themselves.
Intent for what? He clearly had a knife on him that was used for food prep.
He felt he had no choice but to use that knife to protect himself when a gang of scumbags attacked him and his friend for no reason.
And he successfully saved himself and his friend from a savage beating, or from possibly being murdered.
with reasonable force
lets just hope you didnt register yourself as a lethal weapon🤺
Of course not, I am a delight.
Go ahead and let others beat you up so if that’s what you’re into.
To use the knife to cause damage. Food prep? Was he a chef and delivery driver?
To cut fruit, mangos papayas melons etc. he may have picked that particular knife for defense also, but it's not uncommon to see deliveroo drivers eating between deliveries, the little area beside smock alley in temple bar is practically a picnic area.
I don’t agree with this.
We have been discussing the outcome of one specific case, not some theoretical scenario.
Plus the constant he was a promising soccer player....Christ sake...
i'm a double hard man myself, they wouldn't dare
There is an awful lot silliness on both sides here.
Remember, one punch can kill a person. There doesn't even need to be a "beating."
I accept the jury's verdict, albeit I also see the prosecution's side here.
None of us where there or lived the incident/moment. Bento and the other man were in a dangerous situation, but when Bento brought a deadly weapon into this, so were the teens/Josh.
What stood out for me was Bento producing a knife right from the get go. He produced it against one man on a moped.
He reproduced it after other teens became involved. He used it to stab people, killing one person. The prosecution argued he was acting e hard man and was overly aggressive in the way he went about this. He may well have been, and also, he may well have needed to be.
Bottom line: a boy/teen/child's life is gone. Family devastated. No winners here.
Maybe some folks here should quit the OTT almost gloating talk about this teen's death, as well as refraining from the scumbag labeling
As far as I am aware, Josh never came before the attention of Gardaí. It's wrong that people are using this episode to sully his name. He may have never been involved in something like this before. Like I said, similar situations to this could happen to many teenagers. Are they all scumbags for happening to be/become involved?
We were all teens once. I know I was, and I know I had some hairy moments here and there that could have seen me involved in violence, but I also know that I was never a scumbag.
Let's not try define this teen's legacy/name based off what turned out to be seconds of his life...
Well said. Thats the issue i have with this thread , the absolute sureness that this kid was a Scumbag , one poster referred to his mothers "grubby hands"
Hahahahaha fruit. You arent meant to carry a knife for self defense.
So you've seen the CCTV footage?
Loads of scumbags have never been on gardai radar before eventually they are.
Josh Dunne has been painted as some sort of angel from day 1 of this. He was far from it. He was quite happy to see his friends seriously assault two men and when they vigorously defended themselves he joined in.
Him and his mates involved themselves voluntarily, George Bento and his friend did nothing to them at all.
Karma really is a bitch sometimes.
The difference between "then" and "than" is important in this instance.
Cool bro.
The prosecution said he was acting the hard man and used stills from the CCTV. Once the video was shown to the jury they rejected that argument even for an assault charge. Barristers and solicitors are allowed to lie, sorry, say things that are clearly untrue then pretend like they don't speak English, pretty much all they like in court and the jury saw through the bullshit.
Also, the innocent teenagers went way beyond the 2k limit in place at the time so that they could go to an area that was all over the news at the time for the violent incidents and atmosphere. I'm sure that had nothing to do with why they were there though, probably didn't even know about it the angles.
