Does "vriesmays" already speak again with a forked tongue..................
Private investment has always been key to this proposal. Essentially a private company is set to get a Government grant for about 60% of the cost of delivering this project.
Time now for the private investors to come forward and drive this on.
It could be a nice mixture of passenger, cargo and servicing hangers,I did hear of Dublin airport looking to build a T3 building but are at complete full compacity as it is and they would look at moving out the hanger area they have there.maybe waterford could benefit from that as well if the runway is extended
"D'Day" for Waterford Airport again! Seems like every few months is D Day at this stage
I think now they could consider taking up paragliding over the Irish sea. It would save money they will never get and they won't need a runway.
Reports that the €8 million has been secured
thank god, i assume if the airport closed, we d also lose 117?
I struggle to see how the airport would close. Sligo has been operating for years with no commerical flights and is home to R118
Unless it's just a case Waterford has more overheads and would need to cut it's cloth further (which obviously wouldn't be good news for any staff out there)
Political interference is the only thing that would result in losing R117 in my opinion
Rumour has it they're moving the airport up to Nenagh. After all, Waterford has to learn how to share.
Said Big Phil!
Happened to be in the area and swung by the airport for a look- it’s definitely looking worse for wear now- not painted, not well kept. I guess with so little revenue there isn’t the money or need to keep it up. Also the pay parking removed. A shame to see for what is a fine facility
Hopefully some positive movements in the coming months!
News and Star reporting €8 million secured.
further movement towards privatisation of public transport infrastructure, what could go wrong! should be interesting to see how this develops though
Various Govts have tried to walk away from this airport for years, commissioning reports and demanding private investment. Surely if someone takes it up and makes a go of it, that would be better than letting weeds grow over it. It might also provide some alternative to the omnishambles that is the state run Dublin Airport?
again, and understandable statement, but we truly need to be very careful with effectively handing over public assets, a lot of the time, it actually doesnt work out in the public interest in the long term, and after all the bullsh1t, we some times tend to be forced to purchase these assets back, using the public purse, and at extra cost to. strict conditions are rarely included in such events, we tend to get overly excited about the private investment saviors, but.........
dublin airport is due to many complex issues, public spending has been severely curtailed over the decades, and its now starting to catastrophically fail, and then of course, covid has turned the whole industry upside down and inside out, its not just due to the inefficacies of the public domain, and damn are there too many to even mention, but whats rarely spoken about are the severe inefficacies of the private sector, we ve convinced ourselves the private sector is god, and is impossible to be so!
Sure this is a privately owned and run airport which appears to be set to benefit from another tranche of public investment.
I would be optimistic in the sense that you have both public and private investment planned here. Private investors will surely be looking for a profit out of the place, which is no harm at the end of the day if it means that the place will be run efficiently.
Hopefully €8m of private investment will cut it with the cost of everything going up.
Yes, lets end up with another Galway Airport, that would be better. 🙄
...but does efficient profiteering ultimately mean lets screw over everyone as much as possible, for as long as possible, such as the labour force, maintaining low wage inflation and poor working conditions(contracts), then when it goes t1ts up, fcuk it, maybe this is whats occurring in dublin, maybe! maybe theres an issue with this approach, maybe!
of course not, lets just make sure we ve crossed our t's and dotted our i's, before getting giddy over the folks with the fat wallets, whos long term interests may not align with our long term interests and needs!
Main thing is the signs are positive, the airport has huge potential and was busy when Aer Arann used to fly to London, Manchester etc. If they can secure Ryanair or Aer Lingus with a few decent destinations it will only go from strength to strength. If Knock airport in a rural bog in Mayo can be successful there is no issues with WAT being even busier.
😀😂🤣.... I feel a song coming on....
Good news and I agree with you but… John Cummins is nowhere to be found on this. Usually, he is claiming credit for everything. Also, we have Micheál Martin AKA Mr Cork and sod everybody else as Taoiseach. You can be sure he is against Waterford airport expanding and has already refused to give support for the government funding. All does not bode well for the government funding piece.
is this finally good news!!
What does this mean? Has the runway extension gone out to Tender?
doubt a tender is out that quickly….I’d say at least a year away and with the impact of the Ukraine invasion probably 2/3 years away
And the small matter of the government coughing up their share
When can we realistically expect to see flights from Waterford ?
...or will it happen at all, tis a risky strategy....
Does anyone know if there is a way of checking / list available of government or semi state co’s contracts / tenders……if so it’s probably the best way do keep an 👁 on any progress with the airport developments
