That last video brings back some bad memories, I used to drive that up to a few years ago, that's idiotic driving. At the end of the day, traffic coming out of Parkmore West was crazy, I know they put two lanes outside Merit/EA Games to help, but all it did was encourage more drivers to take left lane and go around the roundabout and take the third exit to head towards the lights.
I used to work at FKM before it became EA. No lights at the end of road so what you used to have was cars turning left, u turning at the housing estate before the school and heading for the roundabout.
Had to travel to Briar hill a couple of times in the not too distant past and was pretty amazed by what I saw traffic wise. I always wondered why I was hearing about traffic on that road to 'Bóthar Na dTreabh' on the morning radio but now I know. I would not fancy sitting in that every day! https://streamable.com/6h6uaf
Thats the Tuam rd, not BnT but point taken.
Crazy stuff in your parkmore vid 🤦♂️
mad stuff in Briarhill. Rules of the road out the window. Needs bollards. Lots of em
A proposal to use lands at Cappagh Park for a Park n Ride has been sent to the NTA for review
While its not a bad idea honestly I personally think that if it not accessible directly from the R336 then it's not going to be highly used.
That being said, it might be the right impetus to progress the reworking of the WDR to convert it to something similar to the SQR. Otherwise any bus coming from it is going to be slowed going up the WDR
Timing wise, by the time its done you could feasibly drop the car there and have a bus lane all the way to the square as it would go WDR > SQR > Cross City Link
This is not been done for P&R, its for Overspill car parking at Cappagh Park at the weekends. How to get the money is why they are saying P&R
I don't think either idea's justify it to be honest.
True, though in fairness it could fill both requirements if done right
Why not just run more buses from Bearna? or create the P&R there. Would that not be the P&R target audience here?
For WDR - I would start first with permeability onto it from all the estates - reduce the walking distances to get onto it to avail of the buses
That was my point where I mentioned the R336 access. In terms of bus priority provision I don't think there will ever be a bus lane along that road so any buses there would be slower than just staying in the car which wouldn't encourage usage unless parking in the city is made massively more unattractive
No argument there
But residents object to such permeability, screaming 'anti-social'. I recall Hawthorn Place residents objecting to WDR ped access backed up by McNelis, Whiteoaks residents objecting in 2019 to the existing pedestrian access adj school - again McNelis "people pay good money for their houses", and in Kingston:
The Garrai de Brun residents object to a provision in the application referring to a “Potential Future Pedestrian Link” to existing housing developments, meaning them. The residents said they were worried that this could increase anti-social behaviour and led to their estate being used as a rat run by cyclists and pedestrians. https://www.galwaydaily.com/news/plans-for-74-new-homes-in-kingston/
used as a rat run by cyclists and pedestrians.
F me, I've heard it all now
Well, it was mentioned in-thread a few months ago, pay attention!
The driver behavior in the Parkmore video there is shocking, that shouldn't be normal. Place is turning into a real life version of the Canyonero episode of the The Simpsons.
Ah you're right, I recall it being thick then too.
Thankfully the council are committed to increasing permeability, not reducing it. There might be one or two nimby situations but the majority of permeability moves will succeed. Those that fail can always be revisited at a later date anyway
Comrade McNelis is a strange fish.
This linkage has been upgraded since. Nice tarmacadam surface on it now at the School.
Rusheen Woods link has been improved, gap in the wall widened, tarmacadam surface and good street lighting put in as well.
It can be done, Council need to do this everywhere - where existing linkages exist, improve them, dished kerbs, street lighting, surface treatment.
Makes the case then in the surrounding area's to get out the con-saw. Very cheap as well.

A week or twos work for 2 lads in hard hats to modify 4 concrete walls.
These are NOT laneways behind peoples houses - they are connecting footpaths to each other.
This pedestrian access model already exists in the older area's of Galway City Salthill, Shantalla, Newcastle, Renmore and Mervue
Agree that the access model exists in other suburbs.
But it may be (part of) the reason that some people chose to live in Knocknacarra, rather than elsewhere.
Now,the Knocknacarra model wouldn't be for me. But we don't all have to live the same way.
True, its a more costly way of living as a result for the residents. Lock those residents into a car dependent model.
This is of course is a result of Developer led planning, Galway City Council have failed the people here. WDR corridor is a really good example of this.
+ locking in Kids to that mode as well. Good article in the Irish Examiner this weekend about this from Catherine Conlon.
Good to see GCC Councillors are consistent in prioritising parking ahead of kids being able to travel safely
Car parks at the church and kingfisher and yet it's still not enough for them.
Murrough Ave is basically one lane because of the amount of cars parked along there despite every house having a drive.
Glad Cllr rejected even if it was not for the right reasons, it wasn't a very good proposal from a cycling perspective. Proposal from Renmore Avenue was to just reduce the carriageway width and put in raised crossings. Should be aiming for segregated cycle path the entire length of it. There is plenty of space for it, but it is disheartening to see the lack of leadership on it.
Yeah I made such a submission at the time. Loads of space yet they appear to be doing their best not to avail of it
The next phase of consultation is now open for the Galway to Oughterard greenway, details below where you can make a submission through the website, email, post or in person at any of the 3 events.
Project website
Following the first non-statutory public consultation in February / March 2022, the project has progressed further and Galway County Council, in conjunction with Galway City Council now invite the residents of the local area, members of the public and other interested parties to participate in a second non-statutory public consultation on the Route Corridor Options for the project. Your participation in this consultation is important and we would value any feedback which you think should be reviewed by the project team to help inform the development of the project.
The project is currently within Phase 2: Options Selection, which involves the examination of options in order to determine a Preferred Option. The purpose of this public consultation is to inform the public of the option selection process and invite feedback on the Route Corridor Options.
A series of in-person public consultation events will take place in Moycullen, Oughterard and Galway City between 21-06-22 and 23-06-22:
In addition, all relevant material will also be made available on the project website to allow for virtual means of consultation.
The information will be accessible online at https://galwaytooughterardgreenway.ie/ from Friday 17th June 2022, throughout the consultation period and beyond with submissions accepted until Friday 15th July 2022.
Please submit your views and feedback online or send by post or by email on or before Friday 15th July 2022. Alternatively, please attend one of our in-person consultation events, where members of the project team will be available to discuss any queries or concerns regarding the project.

The Councillors "parking before children's safety" stance in Renmore trundles on
Do you really think that the councillors are doing this off their own bat, or are they not simply reflecting the views of their voters? In which case it would be more accurate to describe it as people preferring driving (and parking) to cycling.
Philip Boucher-Hayes had an interesting item on the radio during the week about surveys which were done in Ireland showing how we tell surveyors that we are all in favour of more environmental measures ... but not in our area.
Aye, nimby-ism
If the parking is just removed, then people who turn up for matches and funerals will just abandon their cars wherever they can - including on the cycle lanes.
The locals and the councillors know this.
The Council keep failing and think the same strategy's with regards consultations work. Create a website, post documents. Add email or online submission. They really should buy a big horse box truck or the like, convert into a mobile information unit; have a 3/4 team members setup in a local area with it for 2/3 weeks and knock on doors - do leaflet drops and engage with the locals per scheme.
Abandoned cars occur at the moment due to the lack of parking provision, laziness and not wanting to pay.
That's not a reason not to put in safe active travel infrastructure, its a reason to properly manage the parking requirements.
There is a load of parking in the area at the church (free) and the hospital (paid) and so on. Granted usage at certain times might run into capacity issues but it is there.
Not provisioning safe infrastructure for use 24/7 due to the occasional football game or funeral which can be accommodated within a short walking distance is bonkers logic.
If its that important that people can't walk a short distance and parking must be allowed on the road then the plan is well and truly screwed unless they go down the route of removing a playing pitch and replacing it with a car park so it results in something akin to Cappagh Park. For a single playing pitch you'd get 2.5 times the amount of parking in the church.
Regardless of which way they go, if they want to properly provision safe active travel infrastructure something has to give. It's not a "have your cake and eat it" situation.
