The trench run is just sci-fi Dambusters Raid isn't it?. If anything it cribbed more from the Ace Combat franchise, the tight twisting canyon run with a mission failed ceiling and time limit has been in almost every game.
I think it was more enjoyable than the original the action sequences eere grest but i think the romance scenes were just boring and took up too much time and would be painful to rewatch. Is there any other famous fighter jet movies or Top Gun out there on its own?
If we're not counting dog-fight movies from WW2 or earlier, then the only movie that immediately springs to mind is the Clint Eastwood feature Firefox, which he directed and starred, about a web-browser experimental Soviet jet fighter Eastwood's character has to steal.
Saw this during the week and really enjoyed it. Delighted to see that it's doing well at the box office.
There's Iron Eagle which came out in 1986 as well. Not considered to be very good but had a similar budget to Top Gun.
Saw it in the cinema last night. Aerial scenes were outstanding. Rest was fairly muck. Lot of Cruise with his trademark smirky grin. Forgettable characters that I didn't care lived or died. Some seriously cheesy scenes.
That said the jet scenes were so well done I'll give it a pass. Wouldn't go see it in the cinema again and don't think I'd rewatch on TV.
It is one that needs to be seen on the big screen.

I saw Firefox in the cinema on holidays in the US as a kid. My one memory of it was the audience whooping and shouting versions of "kill the commie..." during the dog fight scenes

Just saw Top Gun Maverick it’s absolutely dogsh1te. Knew within 5 minutes it was going to be desperate.
Well actually shite can be used as fertiliser Top Gun Maverick was a congealed mass of micro plastic.
They couldn’t even come up with a decent mission it was just lifted straight out of Star Wars and the script was as dynamic as a rusty off cut of H iron
Cruise actually flew in the jet scenes, far play, but it was 2hrs and 13 minutes of utter shite! 🤬
80s kid here adored top gun and this maverick movie is THE BEST lie back drink a bottle n chill out so so wish life now was as laid back as then bring on Forever Young festival in July 😂😂

How did they find a canyon to practice in that was exactly the same as the one at the target site?
Why didnt they use the cruise missiles to blow up the plant instead of needing the F18s to drop bombs? Or at least to target the SAM site which they knew were there?
Can the F35 not drop precision munitions?
Enjoyed the flying scenes but overall movie was meh
Well the judges on rotten tomatoes gave it 97% and the audience score was 99%. I know rotten tomatoes is gone to shite but an high audience score is normally good. Done well in Cannes also was the rumour. 🤷♂️

They didn't. They mapped waypoints to follow that mimicked the target run. The only similarity is that they did it at the correct height close to the ground, but otherwise in the training they are avoiding fictional canyon walls. As for the other stuff, I actually quite liked that they went the route of explaining as little as possible, so it felt more 'need to know'. For whatever unimportant logistical/political reasons, this was the only way.
Thoroughly enjoyed it myself anyway, it did exactly what it set out to do. Far as the star wars lift goes, I mean, it makes sense - you want two things; flying in tight spaces, and a difficult to hit target. Star Wars wasn't about that attack, that was just something that pops up in the 3rd act and is resolved as quickly -- here we had the full scenario explored and played out with all the training that would be required for it. No problem with an idea being lifted as long as it's explored in an interesting way, which it was here.
Feels like some fellas are getting caught up in plot mechanics, and ignoring the actual content of the film itself.

On the subject of the old dog fight movies, The Blue Max is worth a watch for it's Irish connections - set on the western front in WW1, but actually much of it was shot in Ireland. Flying beneath the viaduct in Fermoy in Cork is a key plot point - which they really did on camera! Pretty impressive back in 1966.

Saw this yesterday, didn’t care much for the first half, was great hearing the original top gun music at the start, loved the original.
second half of the movie flew by and was entertaining, all the new actors are rubbish to be honest.
was better than I expected, popcorn for the brain, not much to think about but plenty of cool stuff to look at.
