The nitrogen in the urine worked straight away. The bag stuff needs rain to work. Cold nights affected growth here. People in my group have the same issue. Ground is low on nitrogen this year for some reason. All the silage samples being tested are coming back negative for nitrogen. There was a big burst of growth there a couple of weeks ago and fields are tired now.
Ground needs feeding this year with the exceptional growth rates last autumn/this spring, blanket spread here every 3 weeks after the last round the 20th of a may, of a bag of cut sward a acre, it was obvious ground needed more the end of May as growth had dropped back to low 50's and grass was yellowish...
Put out another bag of sweet grass at the time and the place has turned inside out and back growing 80 plus a day
I’ve one of those JFC troughs on an out farm. Replacement heifers and bull drinking out of it. Fast flow so never down even an inch at the most. Single strand of wire over it.
My problem is the bull is pushing it with his head, even when it’s full. Any solutions appreciated
3 x 6ft fencing posts cut in half (or 6 broken ones) drive 2 either side and 1 at the ends. Cut off top at an angle.
Nearly all concrete drinkers at this stage m
I drove down very wide rebars around the corners at tank height, but that was for cows.
Big stone in if you have a good flow or as lads suggested posts all round, altho a bull can make shite of all that. Same replaced all plastic drinkers with concrete, even the big ones weren't enough to stop em playing football
Hate those plastic drinkers
Plastic jfc troughs are to me what Tedder’s are to silage crews …….
Just put a shock around it.
I tried but the cattle wouldn’t reach over it.
Dairy culls going well in the mart atm, were yours just before mine?
How soon after wrapping silage can you feed it out? 11 days done and I could do with attacking it 😪 🙈
Only one way to find out! Dry morning wet evening here, and a wet wkend passed as well. Cold enough this evening for June tho
They are after slaughtering it Mooooo. Growth waaaay back here due to lack of rain. Nice drop on Sunday so hopefully it'll pick up.
The lads that were looking for rain will be happy 🤔🤔
If they're still heating the cows may not be to happy
No they ate every scrap Tony.
Was the heat gone from them after 11 days
Yep just had the one 9 lactation cow with poor feet ….auctioneers having a handy time of it selling stock atm 😀😀some demand for stock…cull cows are flying ….great chance to cull problem cows and get a fair price for them
What kinda money are older cows like her making?
I sold a big crossbreed cow last week 605 kgs for 1380.
Had a few this week not as good, 550 1150, 450kgs 880 420 kgs 750
Weighed 495 made 850 ….had poor feet and sliced a tear when she slipped in shed in spring .straight from parlour to mart ..had a 7 calver who had twins in spring but never got going in last weeks again straight froM parlour 755 kg made 1680
Great time to have a clear out 😀
With that kind of money for culls, high milk price and ending of Glanbia peak milk supply limits, does it bode well for in calf heifer price this Autumn?
With a huge swing to beef Ai this year and heap of sexed semen usage (and the lower conception rates to it)I reckon there will be a shortage of dairy stock in next few years ….near 90% of cows and all heifers have got fr straws here
Similar here but only did 4 weeks as opposed to the usual 6 weeks
50% served to friesian here in a 3 week ai window. Everything else to beef breeds. Stock bull out then.
With inflation/recession/food shortages cheaper cuts will be in vogue. Fresians could be on the comeback
