Monkeypox virus

fun loving criminal

This has been found in England last week from someone coming back from Nigeria. It is a virus similar to smallpox. Two more people have been diagnosed with it since then and they haven't been in contact with patient zero, the person coming back from Nigeria.

They're saying right now, it doesn't spread easily between people but how did two people get it without contact with an infected person?

How concerned should we be or are we even prepared at all if this spreads further?

I love how they're telling us that transmission is through prolonged contact but I can't find anywhere on how long prolonged contact is. A virus that was with people since 1970. Yet, covid came along, a novel virus, and they were able to tell us 15 minutes face to face.

So far, the vast majority of cases are among gay men.

It's entirely possible that a woman has contracted it - in fact, it would be amazing if it hadn't happened yet - if they have been in close proximity to an infected person. Households should be on a heightened state of alert if they live with a gay man who has attended one of the gay sex saunas or sex festivals throughout Europe.

This is particularly important if they live in a household that includes children or those who are immunocompromised.

I think it's safe to assume that whilst spread is technically possible with utensils and touching surfaces, the vast majority of transmission is taking place among gay men who have engaged in sexual relations.

We're not seeing the same kind of numbers with community transmission, which would suggest that - even if it's not technically an STI - it is effectively acting as one, or closely approximating in that direction.

But the evidence might change on that, I haven't yet seen any data yet to contradict this.

I conducted a quick survey on any upcoming European gay sex festivals, and there are far more than I expected (even as a member of the LGB-T community myself, I thought there'd be fewer!).

There needs to be some serious work done in the coming weeks (given that the 1-month Pride festivities officially starts today).

But note that some cities, such as Birmingham, have their festival later in the summer. This is true of many cities across Europe, actually. So we can expect widespread transmission of Monkeypox viral disease throughout the summer unless the LGB-T community and authorities make an effort to inform our community of the serious risks of the disease not only to themselves, but also to the risk of passing the disease onto vulnerable people: such as children, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised.

To date, I don't think enough is being done by our community to mitigate spread of this infection and it's because of the mentality we've seen evidence of throughout this thread that seeks to minimize what's happening in the LGB-T community and instead pass this off as a general infection the wider public needs to be cognisant of.

Yes. That is exactly what Iand others have been saying.

While not the most at risk there are those in the public who are not sexual contacts who would be at risk from this .

I agree with Dr Campbell in that clip posted by Captain Barnacles that it would not be good if this became endemic through infecting cats and dogs and other animals .

I also take that immunisation of people who want it with the smallpox vaccine might be something on the cards if these cases continue to rise.

Funnily enough its not the older people in this instance more at risk as we have been vaccinated for it .

Here is Dr Campbell's robust defence of "being fact-checked by the BBC". (As an aside, why do I get the impression that you just recently Googled for this as some means of discrediting him?).

It's also quite amazing that the BBC are, for you it seems, the paragon of academic interpretation on viral disease. But everyone has their own sources, and I respect your choice to choose the BBC as yours.

It is travel related but it doesn't say where these cases came from, still no results back and we've now been told a second test is needed before the results of the first one are even back, it's very strange, creche still closed. Why 2 tests, they tested the first one for something else? It's all kids and staff being tested.

Two negative tests needed a week apart to exclude infection or residual bacteria present ..just precaution with small children .

Everyone already knows about Monkeypox viral disease. Good.

Now what's needed is a targeted campaign toward gay men to ensure that this viral disease does not spread like wildfire as syphilis did within the same demographic over the past 5-10 years. And HIV before that.

It's not really relevant, because there's no great concern that this is going to become a large public health issue. Why does it matter how it was spread? We know that it's not particularly infectious, and the infected isolating once infected is the most effective prevention. There's nothing the general public can really do except maybe think twice before snogging someone with great big blisters on them.

The only precautions anyone will ever need to take with respect to monkeypox is to think twice before doing the nasty or fondling someone with blisters. Otherwise you may end up with those blisters yourself for a few weeks.

More than half of Monkeypox viral disease infections in the UK have been sourced to the gay male community, new data suggests (60.6% of all infections can be traced to 2.5% of the population, or you are 24x more likely to contract the disease if you're a gay man).

Only two of the infections are in women.

The London regional director of public health commented that:

We're reminding everyone of the symptoms of monkeypox, and especially gay and bisexual men in particular, to be especially aware and seek advice immediately by calling NHS 111 or their local sexual health clinic if they have concerns.

Yet we are hearing very little from the LGBT authorities about the disproportionate risk leading into the Pride season?
