Whoever designed the new sprucing up of Eire Og roundabout needs to resign. Looks horrible.
Them, and whoever came up with the new junction layout at Hanover. Oh and right turn out of Tesco on Barracks st.
Matter of taste really. Roundabout decor can only do so much. Thought it looked good this morning. Each to their own I suppose
Does anyone know the story behind why the pulpit was removed from the cathedral?
Very interesting planning notices this week.
J&C Brenco plan on changing a unit on Centaur St. into residential; going down there it's, broadly speaking, on R.H.S. before where Carlow Electrical Wholesalers used to be.
But it's the LIDL one which is comprehensive enough; in a nutshell an enlarged version & complete demolition incl. a part single, part 2 Storey discount foodstore (as they come under; it's not a supermarket) & incl. EV Charge Points & Bicycle Parking.
ALDI got their P.P. but unlikely they'll proceed til 2023; unlikely both multiples would break ground at same time I'd imagine?
But if they did you'd be left with no ALDI & LIDL in the town (Graiguecullen is available) for 6-9 months; the Enniscorthy one (LIDL) was Covid delayed but much improved.
Re Aldi, I went into the Hanover store last week, it seemed antiquated compared to the revamped store in Bagenalstown. The old layout confused me!
Only difference is different fridges and freezers. The stuff is all the same.
Ukrainian Information Centre open in Mr. Snips premises on Barrack St.
10am-4pm 5 Days.
Lunch 1 O'Clock to 1:30pm.
Sister is thinking of sending her son to the Tech.
Has it improved in recent years or does it still attract a rough crowd?
No Saturday Night Fireworks for Eigse this year; there is the Annie Film from 1982 though.
Line up wise the highlights would be Tolu Makay & Ye Vagabonds & Tadhg.
Meanwhile down the road the Festival of Writing & Ideas is occurring in Borris House from Friday - Sunday incl.; they only do day & weekend tickets which is a bit of a shame; there's only about 4 talks on the menu I'd like to attend; two of them clash but one in particular in the Stephouse sees Pat Nevin being interviewed by Danny Kelly; Sunday in the Roundhouse at lunchtime sees Joanne ORiordan of No Limbs No Limits being interviewed by Olivia O'Leary; this is Joanne's second or third appearance on the bill in recent years I think.
Queues this morning as per my social media feed for opening of Penneys; ah here like?
I don't get it, I really don't; am I missing something?
Like the footage I saw from an acquaintance, suitably chastised, indicated 100+ easily.
Press Preview was yesterday & then today there's the ususal live-streaming without consent of women & children etc. at it.
It's Penneys; this isn't Duran Duran playing Eigse like!
Crazy re: penneys. There's no sales on that I know off, it's still the same clothing, so what's the big mad rush and traffic🤷♀️. Cars had to turn around and come out of car park due to it being full.
Dunnes've won their legal battle over the word "Groceries" in their legal action re exclusivity with Mr. Price https://www.rte.ie/news/courts/2022/0614/1304843-dunnes-groceries/
Will be interesting for Mr. Price about what remains they can sell and/or if they withdraw from their lease (probably a pricey thing to do).
One thing you don't see is To Go Retail Store selling such grocery items....or do they?
Am with Dunnes & Barrow Valley Mgmnt. on this but find it odd To Go have escaped censure; would've thought some of their stock overlaps?
Driven by "Influencers"; Tik-Tokkers locally (IT Carlow are putting on a free influencer type course for teenangers this Summer; think they did same thing last year too https://carlow-nationalist.ie/2022/06/13/how-to-win-friends-and-influence-people/?fbclid=IwAR1G0wtI-OvtgHo_8jmfEz-fA2CkMPkw2pUIciIxQZZTTl06Q5-9C6a0GJg) & local media (Press Preview was Monday afternoon;Nationalist & KCLR in attendance; unsure who else was invited in terms of Carlow Live & other such "Influencers); the usual local head-the-balls lost theirs over the transfer of business across the road to a renovated store; sad is being polite.
I asked Heaney publicly did he have permission to film random people shopping in Penny's, he deleted the post soon after.
Our perennial offended Cllr. (got in on last count it should be noted; the Protest Before Practicalities Party & their hard left ilk only got about, or maybe even less than, 2% of the GE 2020 1st Preference Vote.....) got offended........again!
Careful or he'll give you a shout out on one of his many pages before whining to boards about you.
Any plans to locate a coffee shop at Penneys? I suppose there'd be the usual objections and refusals.
Fire at Oglesby and Butler factory unfortunately today
Massive one by what can be seen on a few videos and pics doing the rounds. Hopefully everyone got out safely.
edit--Emergency Times reporting no injuries and all evacuated safely, hopefully so.
What happened?
https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/judge-orders-release-of-men-jailed-for-contempt-of-court-over-carlow-property-1320299.html
The usual nutjobs will take this as a victory and a sign that they're right unfortunately
What’ll become now of the Penneys unit (old SQ) in the Carlow SC now they’ve moved back to Hanover? Management will sorely miss that tenant. Maybe TK Maxx but likely in no rush given the way the economy is headed
A lot of the bigger ones have Insomnias in them. Surely the new Carlow one would be perfect for one
The amount of traffic the shopping centre will lose is crazy. I'd say about 75% of the people were there for Penneys
The pharmacy will be OK but the smaller shops can't last there without the foot traffic.
Already the ice-cream unit that was to the left hand side of the Penneys unit has left the building; even prior to it the old Peadar & Etta Doyles unit, most recently occupied by Centz, was vacant & another unit in between it & the ice-cream unit was empty also.
On top of this there's a sizeable unit empty now beside the Recovery Hub/Wigoders; it was storing stock for Second Chances shop the ISPCA fundraising place & then there's also the unit on the left hand side as you come in from car park; was occupied by Magic Bow Boutique which relocated inside in recent months.
I did hear a story that after Dunnes won their court case last week, that Mr Price are going to close their store in Graigue (in fairness, it can't survive following the ruling) and also the one behind McDonalds and combine them into one in the Carlow Shopping Centre
As of today another concession stand has gone; it was the phone covers & other paraphrenelia stand opp. the ice-cream stand which has also vacated the centre.
Something'd want to go in there fairly lively alright or Christmas will be like Tumbleweed in there; would imagine Peter Marks & MacAuleys're tied into a 5-10 year contract?
Mr. Price probably won't go in; they need independent access to their stores & generally open late til 9 5 days, maybe Saturday too.
But you're right re the unit in Graiguecullen; hard to know what they can sell if Dunnes go in hard regarding what is & what isn't a grocery item now they've won their case; it's already dragged on about a year where they were alredy restricted on what they could sell and now even less items they were already selling during the injunction can now be sold.
Why wasn't To Go Retail Store included by Dunnes in their action; I'd imagine there'd be a number of grocery items which clash even before the latest ruling?
I can’t see that suiting Mr price? They usually go for slightly down market places like old warehouses or units a bit off the beaten track.
Im not a huge Mr Price fan and definitely wouldn’t entice me in there whatsoever. Seems to me they sell a lot of tat that other places can’t sell or short dated. Very downmarket.
Carlow SC is actually a really lovely building and if run properly could be very good. M&S would be a great addition to there
