Chaos at Dublin Airport

What on earth is going on at Dublin Airport? After weeks of stories of people having to queue out the door, staff assaulting passengers, mass brawls, people being asked to pay to use the drop-off zone, goods being stolen from luggage and now today the airport itself treated us to this statement:

The should send someone on the DAA board into the airport with a megaphone, get them to read out that statement and get people to pay to watch the livestream - that would easily provide enough money to properly staff what is apparently our major international Airport. I am due to go on a flight from there later this month and I think I'm going to need xanex to stop myself from completely losing it if this is the way it's going to be.

Yeah maybe but it's also down to the airlines overbooking an airport that doesn't have the capacity to deal with all these flights. It should be interesting to see what measures they can put in place to get things running smoothly.

there were 200 flights cancelled in Gatwick yesterday due to unavailability of staff. There are problems around Europe with flying, we are not on our own being the laughing stock at least.

thats an incredibly backward way to look at things. The airlines pay DAA good money to fly through Dublin, so its 100% the responsibility of DAA to provide the service they are being paid to do.

They cannot.

thats down to bad management, planning, foresight.

the reputational damage this is doing will be wide spread and hard hitting.

Ultimately its the airport that accepts bookings from the airlines so the fault lies with DAA. If DAA don't have capacity they shouldn't accept new routes/additional flights etc.

The army should get involved as their looks to be no alternative. DAA clearly cannot cope at our defence forces are hardly busy in all out war.

This is situation is to some degree an emergency and we should be leaning on them it at all possible.

The chaos at Dublin airport is the biggest **** you to climate change I’ve seen in Ireland. Most want change but nobody wants to change.

The almost daily scenes playing out will probably attract even more bookings in the short term as people try to navigate their way out of Dublin for a holiday.

Army can be mobilised quickly, efficiently and will follow instruction to aid the situation. They were magnificent in the way they helped run Covid vaccine stations, organisation was swift and smooth. The only down side is the optics for foreigners seeing army personnel in our airports, but they would get over that when the lines start disappearing.

Climate Change experts would probably say flying for holidays should be stopped by now,we constantly hear that there will need to be huge changes to our lifestyle and foreign holidays by air should be a low hanging fruit with regard to changing lifestyles.Booked to go to Italy in Sept but would be ok and understand if I was told that is finished for all now.I am sure liveline etc would go into meltdown but really we all know this is coming .I love foreign holidays but prefer to know the roof on my house won't be blown off in night.

Newsflash for you mate, you might want to pick up an atlas, but we are an island. In an era of world connectivity, unfortunately aeroplane is how we access the world.

Nothing that Ireland does will have anything more than the most miniscule of an effect on climate change. We are responsible for a fraction of a percent of the worlds total emissions, whilst other countries who are responsible for significant percentages have absolutely no interest in changing their ways, nor is anybody going to get them to.

People want change but why should anybody deny themselves a holiday when China is over there pumping out 315 times our total emissions with not a word said or done about it. Utter nonsense.

Manchester has been identical to Dublin for a while now. Made the news repeatedly over there the exact same as it has over here, for the same reasons.

This has F all to do with climate change and people feeling on it. This is down to staff shortage. I wish people would stop trying to shoehorn in the topic into this to prove a point one way or the other. As a side note there is a lot of development in airplane engines atm on fuel efficiency and greener fuels. Some even going so far as trying full electric (not possible imo as you would still need fuel as a fall back if something happens to the electrics or hybrid

Manchester is the 3rd/4th biggest airport in the UK in terms of passenger numbers, and the biggest in the North of England. It has an extensive transatlantic catalogue. It is a big deal.

However, I do agree that the sheer volume of airports in the UK helps to hide this issue better. Within striking distance of Manchester airport you have Liverpool, Birmingham, and Leeds Bradford - all with fairly strong destination lineups themselves.

Here, the vast majority of our flights go from Dublin. It is a significantly smaller percentage that go from Cork and Shannon (and Kerry + Knock). Furthermore, the distance between these locations is a lot bigger than the distance between the failing Manchester and it's nearby airports. I could be in Liverpool airport or Leeds airport in an hour from Manchester using public transport - it would take me more than 3 hours to get to Cork airport from Dublin using public transport.

Jesus Christ. Routes, gates and landing spots aren’t sold Willy nilly. They are established for years.

The fact of the matter is that if the airport paid enough, people would stay in the jobs there. DAA / Aer Rianta make plenty of money from the multiple Duty Free sections they own in multiple airports, so don’t think that this is because ‘people won’t get out of bed for 14.14 an hour’, it’s because they can’t live off that money

You could say any small nation or person is not responsible for climate change. We are part of the EU, 500 million people, the EU has a big effect on climate change and fuels the Chinese economy, so I'm afraid we are responsible too whether you like it or not. Irish people are massive consumers.

Going off point here but I hate how Irish people think they should be exempt from emissions targets because of their passport.
