Texas School shooting 19 children and 2 adults murdered

A murder suspect on the run had a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) issued for their arrest at the time they reportedly ran into a school in Uvalde, TX and started shooting. The killer ~~hasn't been named yet~~, but they are 18 years old; their motives aren't shared; it does not appear to be the same fugitive as Gonzalo Lopez, who is on the run in TX for the stabbing of a prison bus driver. As recently as the past hour, Texas officials said Lopez was still on the run, this shooter meanwhile died in custody reportedly.

Abbott identified the shooter as 18-year-old Salvador Romas. He was killed by officers. According to the governor, the shooter abandoned his car and entered the elementary with a handgun and possibly a riffle [sic]. He horrifically shot and killed a total of 15 people.

Spraying bullets isn’t a feature amongst most hunters, though if you encounter a hog, it may be a good idea as the first round or two will probably just make it angry. Many states will limit magazine capacity when hunting certain animals like deer, five-round magazines are available for ARs for the purpose.

At that one moment in that exact scenario where the gunman is already in the building and coming to kill me and my kids, then yes, I'd prefer to have a gun. As long as the gunman is not expecting me to have a gun.

In pretty much every other scenario (which covers 99.999% of the time) having access to that gun makes life more dangerous in the school for me, and for the children, and the public at large.

The AR-15 fires single-shot, too. 5.56 NATO is not a shotgun shell, there's no spray (and don't hunt deer with birdshot). The caliber you could use for hunting, depending on the game would be even higher than that. The rifle I once used to deer hunt fired an even higher caliber, remington 7mm-08.

The only thing the gun lobby would understand is if enough pinko liberals and hippies started walking around starbucks, down the sidewalk etc. all walking their dogs packing shotguns and rifles. Look anyone who things guns are going to be banned are kidding themselves. Minimum federal laws are at least needed such as a licence and maybe trying and a test before you get it just like a vehicle licence. Proof of gun safe and ammo storage. They could try and say what type of guns someone could have but 2 problems there. 1 it be struck down by the courts and 2 how do you take the ones already owned out of circulation

It's just another example of this "Extreme Independence" thing that they seem to glorify in the US.

Every little one-horse town calls itself a city and has its own Police or Sheriffs department with varying levels of training, experience and ability.

In Texas you could have the Sheriffs Office , Police Department , Highway Patrol , State Troopers , Texas Rangers , FBI , DEA , ATF , Border Patrol ,US Marshalls ,Homeland Security and probably a few more I'm not remembering all operating in the same place.

No consolidated chain of command , no consistency in operating procedures, skills or training , no shared communications systems.

And that's before you get into the jurisdictional nonsense between them all.

Just nonsense, largely driven by a mindset that says "We won't be told what to do by "Big Government" so we'll all do our own thing.

The NRA more stewards the firearms sphere in general. In political discourse, they are known for their political lobbying, but in terms of expenditure, lobbying is a minuscule portion of its dollar spend. They are, in effect, the industry standard for training and safety. If you go to a range, the expectation of a professionally run range is that the range safety officers are NRA certified and the range is built and run to NRA standards. Safety training is normally free to whoever wants it, I’m not sure about marksmanship training.

I would again point out that we do have some case studies where in the US teachers may be armed (and at least in two states, students). The parade of horribles hasn’t happened anywhere, to my knowledge, compared to two stopped shootings and one stopped kidnapping. Remember, these are the same people who are allowed carry a weapon off school property.

With respect to the effectiveness of a firearm vs the risk, there are two competing, but not exclusive, arguments. One is that a death by firearm is more likely when you have one. Suicide alone can account for this, but we can also add accidents and plain murder (domestic arguments, etc). The other is the question of what happens when the firearm is used defensively. That is misconception by the media and hollywood. They don't spray bullets, they are not "machine guns". The rate of fire is exactly the same as a what you mentally picture as a "hunting rifle". One bullet is fired when you press the trigger. Only ever one per press.
