It looks like a new scheme is on the way as Limerick County Council have started the procurement of consultants for the Foynes to Limerick Road Improvement Scheme.
This is insanity. I used go to Kerry a lot going on 10 years ago now and this town was at breaking point then. Atrocious that nothing had been done given the scale of the issue. Infrastructure in this country is a joke
In fairness to all the politicians, this postponement decision is by An Board Planala (ABP - independent / impartial national body to make judgements on important planning award objections). It has nothing to do with politicians of any party (who have all expressed their approval of the bypass). Even if the bypass is approved by ABP, based on the number of objections, you can expect a number of High Court appeals if ABP eventually approve the project
Traffic back to the M20 interchange today. It’ll be a long wait for those commuters.
That's true, but ultimately our politicians are responsible for the planning system and how it functions (including an underfunded ABP and a free-for-all with judicial reviews). The system was created by law and can be changed by law. While no individual politician should be blamed in this case, it just provides further proof that the Irish planning system is in need of serious reform.
Still no change to decision date of 25/3 on ABP website. Surprised it is not in the media yet.
What was the source of mention of a further delay?
Ask TOK_1 who posted about the delay
But isnt that only at peak times?
New decision date 27th May 2022
The Inspector has now completed her Report so it is reasonable to assume that the Board will consider it in the coming months. Perhaps a decision in June 2022?
Or the 27th May
Bypass Ireland: Adare residents anxiously await May 27 bypass decision
Good article that conveys well the daily inconvenience suffered by residents and passing motorists!
Sadly, I fully expect the Examiner to row in behind whatever anti-M21 campaigners spring up once that decision comes through... when it comes to large projects, their coverage seeks out opposing views, no mater how unrepresentative they might be..
There have been no organised campaigns against the road up to now. These types of groups are normally quite vocal all through the planning process. Why would one spring up suddenly if planning has been granted?
Indeed it’d be most surprising to see a campaign spring up against this post approval.
The usual environmental people may launch a challenge but they don’t get the same level of press that the NIMBYs get.
Slightly off-topic but case in point - this morning the NTA announced €600m spending on BusConnects for Cork, to build nearly 130 km of bus and bike infrastructure in Cork along 12 corridors, a massive piece of investment with the potential to completely revolutionise how Cork works and make it a leader in sustainable transport.
The Examiner's lead article on the story was headlined "Bus plans for Cork mean loss of on-street parking and some gardens."

There is no need for an organised campaign in our current system. It only takes one single person to launch a judicial review and stall everything for years.
The people who launch judicial reviews are always vocally anti the project during the planning process. There is nobody who fits that description here. Again I'll say to you to stop using the M28 as the yard stick for how these things go.
I hope you're right. We'll find out soon either way.
Is it hoped that this will be done in time for the Ryder Cup in 2026 2027? Is that ambitious?
There'll be pressure to get the Adare bypass section done by then anyway.
Yes. Currently no funding allocated to commence this pre-2026 so that’s barrier number one.
If there is I haven’t seen much of it. It’s only a few years away really and in road building terms would want to be starting soon. If I was a betting man it won’t be completed by then. There’s simply no political will in this country to develop infrastructure.
Delusional more so I would think. There was talk 4/5 years ago about having it done for that. Not a shovel has moved in the meantime nor will it.
It could easily be done by then based on previous experience.
As for funding this will be assigned when the project is ready to be constructed.
Isn't the funding for this project European money already allocated / ring fenced? if I recall from some sort of strategic infrastructure fund in relation to the access to Foynes port.
Decision due this week unless TOK_1 has the inside track to another delay?
“Could be”, yes. Do you think it will be? I see no evidence to support that but would be happily surprised if it did. ‘22 half over and not a sod has been turned yet.
Bit hard to turn a sod on a scheme that doesn't have planning yet.
But it would definitely be possible to tender and construct it by September 27.
Exactly- doesn’t even have planning yet. So that’s not even guaranteed- meaning more delays are very possible. I’m happy to be proved wrong
There will be no decision by an Bord Pleanala today - deferred until the end of June
