Teachers in the US should be armed.

    Just saw this update:

RIP, an absolute tragedy, that only happens on a regular basis in the US.

Right to bear arms trumps right to kids living.

    Horrific yet not surprising

14 students and a teacher killed (various outlets reporting). Horrific.

As a teacher of kids similar ages thats absolutely horrendous. RiP little angels and their teacher who I'm sure did all they could to save them.

Those type of weapons should not be allowed. One shot and reload should be the standard.

not a word the the children who were just slaughter

You couldn't have timed it better with the reply above yours.

I'll pass on your invitation to haunt the Irish domestic politics threads. This is a current affair.

Nothing will change, doesn't matter if 500 kids, or 1000 kids. The place is a lost cause.

Too much money in guns for them to even be restricted never mind banned. If Sandyhook didn't do it it'll never happen.

Is the culprit just another lone wolf having a bad day or from a minority?

Remember more guns and less control will prevent mass shootings especially in schools .

Amazingly enough they are quick to ban school books to protect children

Apparently Texas has more guns per capita than every other state in the US.

*correction - most actual guns, not guns per capita.

Absolutely I've family in San Antonio ,they have something like 10 firearms for every man , woman and child Texans tend to a different breed altogether

And if he'd been shot before opening fire there'd be another thread of indignation

You would be inclined to get a gun if you lived there to protect you from loons, it's a vicious circle.

The press conference from Abbot, it's like he couldnt' give a toss, this is interrupting his day to get the list of abortion clinics that he need to be shutdown.

More guns? I doubt that's the solution. Just get rid of them altogether. Port Arthur in Australia had a mass shooting in 96 and the government moved quickly to outlaw most types of guns and had an amnesty. Murder/suicide rates fell off a cliff overnight. There are too many unstable people in the world to give almost free access to all sorts of dangerous weapons.

I know of a friends brother and his family (2 kids) who are moving from Dubai to Texas in the next month (brothers job) and it just makes me think of how regular these incidents are in the states (I know it’s not just Texas, but still) and how they would be so much better off in Dubai. Just horrific news.

Try to repeal the second amendment in the US and it's likely they would end up in civil war pretty much overnight ,gun owners would rampage and fight to the death rather than give up their guns

Ah yes, the obvious answer to guns in schools is to have more guns in schools.

Christ it baffles me how people really don't get it.

Well it's not going to be an overnight solution to disarm circa a few hundred million weapons from people, especially those not wanting to give them up, an interim solution would be to arm teachers.

It's a discussion forum. For people to discuss.

You don't like the topic? Don't post in it. It's very simple.

Hmm Dubai- live under Sharia law and face flogging and stoning for consuming alcohol or having premarital sex… Texas- risk my six year old being gunned down when learning his ABCs.

That’s a toughie… think I’ll try… literally anywhere else in the developed world.

    Arm teachers?

Wouldn't like the odds on one teacher locking the door and shooting the whole room full of kids.

You're right but it wasn't all that long ago the thought of abortion or gay marriage in this country was seen as an abomination yet we changed our constitution by public vote. Less then a third of Americans own a gun. Maybe they need a civil war to sort themselves out and reset. The casualties caused will be less than the numerous shooting that will be coming down the track over the next few years/decades.

Eh, it's a current event and is big news even in Ireland. The fact that your first impulse is to complain about the op rather than discuss the topic is possibly more a sign of how endemic school shootings are in the US. Every one of them deserves attention imho cause it wouldn't be acceptable in the average developed country.

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

And then you have hundreds of teenagers and teachers who grow up in a country where gun culture is rife having access to a shitload of guns in every school, some of which include military-style weapons.

That sounds like a smashing idea.

    America is a failed state.

Should be broken up into smaller countries.

With the rate of school shootings, you'd have to think investing in security systems with swipe access and metal scanning systems on entry are something that should be looked at.
