Mcilmiss blowing up again as per usual. He really is a hopeless case at this stage. Plain embarrassing. Probably best retiring and coming back to the seniors tour when he is of age.

Some nice birdies by Rory to get back to -1, but there was way too much damage done up to the 11th. 2 holes left.

Are people just gonna accept the just there for the money about Ryder Cup??

Not a massive Ryder cup fanboy btw

Why? He is top twenty in the world and makes a good living.

Roy McIlrory with another bottle job.

Those five holes or so have cost him the title.

    18th hole y'day encapsulated Rory's position vis-a-vis Pereira.

Both hit identical drives . Rory only makes the fringe-Pereira puts it on the green .

Rory three putts -Pereira sinks a bird from 27 ft.

TBF, a 27ft putt has a low percentage expectation of success, that is one of those things that happens when things are going your way. The probability was much higher that both would make par. But I take your point, three putts are a killer on the score card and for confidence.

One superb round. One awful round. Two average rounds.

When it comes to Rory at majors this is the way.

I thought his final round in Augusta might break that mental barrier but clearly it's a deep psychological issue with him now.

The putting goes to pieces along with his confidence. Which is fickle at best on days like yesterday when he’s not striping his irons.

Normally he is below average from 50-125yrds but there has been a few terrible shots from 150-200 yards which he then compounded with bad chipping and/or putting. Not enough grind in him when it’s not going well.

Thought the post about 18th was a good comparison of the 3rd rounds of both Mito and McIlroy.

    Both drive it 300yds+

Mito: 208 yds to the green leaving 27ft for birdie chance

McIlroy: 192 yds to the fringe leaving 58ft and ..bogey

ultimately McIlroy may well shoot another 65 and fin ahead of Mito…but there 20 other golfers also ahead.

If he even got a par on the last It would only be 15 other golfers.

It’s just not in him at these Majors over 4 rounds to consistently eke out a score when he hit’s it slightly awry on a hole.

Yip, I expect a very good round today when he is out of contention and another “what if” tournament passes him by. Rinse and repeat.

He's some man to back door a top 5

Another frustrating weekend for us Rory fans. He was unreal to watch on the Thursday, and then i proceeded to watch him behind the couch for the rest of the weekend.

It really is mental with him in my mind, if we see the Rory we watched on Thursday then he wins this by 6 or 7 shots. Needs to sort the mental side of the game as the swing is probably 95% there.

of course it's mental with him he throws in the towel when it get's tough, he was lucky to win 4 majors early on at least his legacy in the game is secure

So he is lucky when he wins and shite when he loses I suppose? Was he unlucky this weekend, or lucky to finish in the top 10?

what? Not one player managed to play like that all weekend, they all have good and relatively bad days

he ended -2 and the best was -5, he left a few shots out there, but wasn't far off the pace in the masters and now this

There were loads of big names who cam nowhere near

if he hangs around near the top, one will fall in his lap, that's how it works

yesterday it fell into JTs lap in a big way

    Well, he did.

Make no mistake. Thomas played well, but it was the lads ahead of him that blew it.

Rory has a great track record in recent years of finishing strong on the last day of the tournie and sneaking in for a top5, but no chance of winning. The difference for Thomas is that he actually won.

( and I'm a massive rory fan btw. My comments are out of frustration rather than having a go )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,333 ✭✭✭thefallingman

It's a fair point well made, i mean he hasn't won a major in eight years and looks no closer to winning one in my opinion. Great player obviously that go's without saying but i wouldn't be putting money on him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,409 ✭✭✭cosatron

The treble and double bogey on Saturday were killers if he some how can iradicate these type of errors, he will win majors. Also his iron on the back 9 wasn't hectic yesterday either. He could've shot a big score

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,149 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

golf is game where you can go up and down in score, so you always have a chance

a player behind can put in a charge and put pressure on the players to come

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,149 ✭✭✭monkeybutter

hes only a few shots from winning the last 2 majors

so in total the best player across both comps

as close as you can be without winning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,333 ✭✭✭thefallingman

come on monkey he hasn't even been in the last group, when the pressure is off he plays great on a sunday to get a top 10 or top 5, great it'll win him money but he's had no chance of winning. I do think if he wins a major again he'll probably win a few more but for now when the pressure is on his game falls apart. We'll see how he does in the open, but he's not really a wind player either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 408 ✭✭rooney30

He’s an enigma for sure and no amount of pontificating inside here will solve the Mcilroy riddle . Is it mental ? who knows . Will he win more majors ? Who knows . One thing for definite , more often than not , he’s either exceedingly bad or off the charts good , so rarely a dull moment with him , sport is entertainment afterall!

Ryder cup players don’t receive any payment for playing, it is an exhibition match. The PGA of America donate money to their team members, approx $200k if memory serves me right, which of course is a pittance to any top golfer who qualifies to play, this is donated to charities and the players schools, the players do not keep it. The European players just get token gifts from the captain, nothing from the tour.

the finishing score is all that matters

he was second at the masters, only 1 away from first, you can't be any closer, it took a great performance to beat him and he showed on the last day he is as good if not better than the rest

its not pressure, the lad is sorted for his life and about 30 more generations of mcllroys
