What Pagan elements? Indoor plumbing?
I believe there were some outdoor garden features which were pointed out as being 'pagan". The Wagner group must have felt right at home so.
To my very un military mind this war seems to have more in common with world war 1 than ww2. There are no sweeping blitzkrieg type movements on either side. I’d imagine that tanks sweeping across open countryside and refuelling and waiting for infantry to catch up is a thing of the past now with vulnerability to drones.
Multiple entire industrialised modern ( for the time) countries were falling in a matter of weeks during world war 2. Belgium , Holland and France fell in the space of 5 weeks in May/June 1940.

Exactly. The Russians need to concentrate their forces to a massive degree to make minor advances, while losing mountains of equipment. These advances are likely defeats in reality.
What documentaries don't often shed too much light on is the fact that WW2 saw many periods of reduced activity. It wasn't half as exciting for the people at the time listening to the news etc., like us. History remembers the key moments. I'm no expert either, but I'd find it hard to compare this to either world war. I guess it's not really possible to assess until after the fact.
No, there are certain things we can assess right away, like the Russian military isn't half as good as it was feared to be and their tactics have all the sophistication of a Roy Chubby Brown comedy routine.
Maybe similarities with the North Africa campaign. Early Nazi wins petered out when the yanks sent mountains of equipment to the brits. Nazi resources depleted over time whereas allies supplies massively increased.

Holding the island has serious strategic value ,for the future ,but repeatedly knocking out and degrading air-defences sucks more and more air defence units

Where the current tactic of drones hitting it every other day saves men and equipment while grinding the Russian from afar

I wouldn't be any expert on the African front, I only know what i've seen in documentaries etc. No expert at all. From that though I would have said that comparing the german war machine in WW2 to the Russians in Ukraine would be an insult to the Germans. Even in terms of equipment and infantry in the early days, they rolled over Europe and met their demise when Hitler bit off more than he could chew in the eastern front.
I'd say we're lucky that the Russians aren't comparable in today's standards to the Germans in WW2, with the likes of the Luftwaffe and their panzer divisions.

The Russian narrative has a long history of that sorta BS. They teach their kids similar about Comrade Stalin's "tactics" with the Germans. That he let them move so quickly so he could wear them down and encircle them. No mention of him and his special train running ready to rescue him from Moscow... Nor of the Ribbontrop pact. Well they know about it, but it was Comrade Stalin trying to broker for peace. Yeah. No mention of him an Adolf carving up Poland and the Baltics mind you...

So, to sum up, the Russians massively overreached in the beginning phase, pivoted towards a more modest objective and are being fought to a virtual standstill on that.
I would not completely discount tanks. The problem was the way the Russians use them and the fact that there tanks were a very old design.
Moving tanks along roads is a huge disadvantage, they are designed to sweep through open countryside. As well they use there tanks in small groups of 4-10 rather than in groups of 40-50+. In small groups the the tanks are more vulnerable to small anti tanks weapons and to drones. Also you lose the advantages of tanks large sweeping advances
He has his corridor to the Crimea and controls 80% of what used to be Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. I’d say he’ll settle for that and dig in
The necessity of establishing a land bridge to Crimea sounds fairly antiquated. What will the Russians be doing next? Expeditions to South America to bring back some pineapples? Did no-one tell Putin there was already a bridge to Crimea?
They've unnecessarily expended a lot of men on this 'goal', and it's not that Putin will settle for it, but that it's all he may get, so he has no choice but to try and spin that as a victory. Taking Ukraine as he envisioned he could back in late Feb looks virtually impossible now without a full mobilisation of forces, and even then a full mobilisation could lead to political destabilisation in Russia as young people go, "Yeah, f*ck that. I'm not getting conscripted to go die in some adventure I don't even understand or see the point of."

He wants to landlock Ukraine ,the original idea was the Belarusians would push in and grab land in the west and possibly cut off routes into Poland , then the few thousand men in transitaria would push in via Moldova and push to Odessa and grabbing more land , completely isolating what ever is left .
But what he actually got was the biggest kick in the balls from the Ukrainians and he's got very little for the sheer loses and international isolation
They couldn't even take the full coastline, and as they appear to be focusing on the east of Ukraine, it's unlikely they ever will. The main achievement has been establishing control over the stretch of coast between Crimea and the Donbass, but this has been done in an extremely messy way. Mariupol is a smoking ruin and a symbol of Russian barbarity, and it's far from a foregone conclusion that the gains made are even permanent. They haven't even managed to fully cut off Ukraine from the Black Sea.
Stalin would have machine gunners behind his troop dedicated to shooting any solider who retreated…also had anyone in the army who was intelligent/could speak multiple languages shot as well
