With the leader of the main Unionist party applauding speeches calling the GFA 'iniquitous' and 'deceit' are the upcoming elections a test for the seminal agreement?
It's hard to know what will happen if the DUP manage to get their vote out and maintain the majority vote.
Until you said it was not official business you were referencing. 🙄
So the point now is 'People can go where they please, but COveney going where he pleased was bad judgement'.
Ok 😁
He is a fcuking Government minister... he cannot get involved in internal politics in a different jurisdiction...
Irish politicians have always given speeches in other countries - Bertie spoke in Westminster, every Taoiseach speaks in the USA on Paddy's Day - a ploy that continues simply as a vote catching exercise for the current POTUS.
Anyhow, are you referring to SC's presence at the John and Pat Hume Foundation?
This is pretty confusing - surely you'd be in favour of politicians taking an interest in matters and travelling both sides of the border?? An All Ireland basis and all that..
Or is it only Sinn Féin that can straddle the border in your view?
Of course its part of the job but not get involved in party politics... SF have a bit of an edge on this considering they are biggest party North and only one short of top in South...
This crying and complaining is nearly as bad as the whinging that MM didn't congratulate MON on becoming First Minister - except that she hasn't yet.
He wasn't on government business at that event. Politicians travel all over the world speaking at other party's they have an affinity/connection with, events. Jeffery Donaldson got a standing ovation at FG's party conference for instance.
Thats exactly my point what was he doing there in a place where there is not a Government in place...
Also we are a happy clappy people but reality is different...
Seems Boris had a good weekend... No assembly Friday... Mon he in Belfast with loads of criticism... Today proposal that seems reasonable and jeffrey in some sort of agreement i think... Tomorrow business people marching in London...
Bit of criticism from EU and some understanding i also think... Not a bad couple of days for a bumbling fool...
He was addressing another party's event. What had the lack of an Executive (not a government) got to do with it?
And I think Boris's trip showed he is getting ready to shaft Unionists again, nothing more.
Are the assembly not part of Government... i am not really too informed in politics...
Donaldson made positive comments today according to C4 news about new proposal so he doesn't seem to think its shafting...
Nothing today from our own lot North and South...
The British said they might do something.
Been there done that a hundred times before.
This time they're serious
I have to admit i am not too informed on NI politics but i thought this is what SF have always wanted. measning be a dominent force in Irish politics North and South... If the UK are able to tweek the protocol and get the assembly running with SF as 1st minister... is this not amajor step forward...
What do you seem think be the best option at the moment... i expect you have ideas that would work as i assume you SF supporter and expect you know whats happening on the ground... There was very little comment from politicians in this Island yesterday and Dublin and Belfast meetings happened the day before... It may be we are just spectators now and it between EU and UK i do not know...
Please share your thoughts as to what you think be a way forward...
The two governments need to do their duty responsibly. If they did that, NI would be ok.
And that responsibility includes not allowing things to fester.
A question needs to be formulated and asked of the people, do you wish to continue with the UK or do you wish to align with Dublin and the EU.
If that sounds suspiciously like a Border Poll, so be it, the time has come for that question to be asked.
You may say that is divisive and destabilising but it is no more destabilising or divisive as where we are headed now.
Dublin are kindof oiut of the equation on the protocol... between EU and UK... this needs to be sorted before vote...
Do you not want an assembly next week with SF as first minister...
What you mention are all events and invited by the Government of whatever country on the day...
Did you ever hear of a politician from any country canvassing for a perticular party in another country...
Also the event mentioned earlier took place while there was no Government in place...
I see that Sinn Fein cannot manage to run things by themselves, they need to get MM in to talk to the natives to sort things out.
Everyone born on the Island is a native (Irish) I don't think Boris is going to take any sith from any of us natives if he gets the protocol agreed... I expect the assembly will return to normal and the childish bickering in NI will need to be addressed going forward...
Not up to me M.
That's up to whoever are the democrats.
Not true, everyone born on the island is not Irish.
What are they?
I don't know how many times I have to explain the same thing to people. As a result of the GFA, we recognised that people born on this island can be British. It is no longer true to post the narrative that we are all Irish on this island - that is gone.
"(vi) recognise the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, as they may so choose, and accordingly confirm that their right to hold both British and Irish citizenship is accepted by both Governments and would not be affected by any future change in the status of Northern Ireland. "
I was assuming that the people on here all Irish... it may be your a effin foreigner... you can tell me as i do not know the rules...
So you created this thread and though i dip-in you seem to be always there... we are all democrats... also we all have personal opinions... i am not too informed on politics but i will say what i see...
So what do you think way forward...
Your lack of knowledge of the north is ridiculous.
Sorry lad it was my fault for assuming you knew the difference between nationality and citizenship.
You're obsession with Sinn Féin is bordering on creepy now
Can you explain this difference between nationality and citizenship in your terms.
I know I'm a citizen of this Republic of Ireland. I'm also an Irishman by nationality in that I was born here, spent all my life here and identify generally with Irish culture etc.
The GFA recognises that peoples of NI can identify as British and/ or Irish citizenship. That's fine but nationality is a different matter. I'm inclined to think that anyone born on and who has lived their life on the island to be of the Irish nation. But there are those who regard their nationality as NI ish or Scottish or British whatever that is. They were born here but are of a different culture. And culture is really what is used to define nationhood.
Even those in FG are expecting a border poll soon, might as well start discussing it and have a citizen's assembly
She probably looking for a bit of a "real man rebel" security comfort and we all have needs... you kno...
