A cold start to Spring with widespread frost. -4c atm at Mount Dillion.
Who promised it?
The only places promising heatwaves is the rag papers. Up to a few days ago we looked on course for a week long warm spell, but this was extended range stuff and being so far out could go wrong very easily and we are now at the stage where this has already gone pear shaped. The models have downgraded this spell to almost nothing at this stage with most of the warmth pushing north through south-eastern England, low countries and Germany up through the North Sea.
We still look on course for a relatively dry and settled weekend. Eastern areas may get Monday out of it but next week is now increasingly looking unsettled and Atlantic driven, much like this week.
This is the precipitation chart for the next 10 days, most of this rainfall will fall between Tuesday and Friday of next week. Could be very wet in places.
Temperatures will be nothing to write home about either, genearlly 14 to 18C over the coming week. A few places may scrape 20C over the weekend.

Again windy af in Dublin and cold. We mustn't forget it's early May though, it's often freezing till we get the usual couple of weeks good weather at the end of May/beginning of June.

Only in Ireland do you send your child on school tour with raincoat, warm coat, wellies suncream applied(even though it's raining that morning) sunglasses and spare clothes to cover all weather events!

Another autumnal day here in Meath, chilly, blustery showers and fairly windy at times, currently 13C, however it does feel nice every now and then when the sun pops out while being sheltered from the breezes/wind.

It's so true. We arrived in park and heavens opened, so we had all the coats on, 20 minutes later sun is spilting the sky and its roasting!

Agreed. It feels like October, cool blustery and heavy showers that would drown you in seconds. Roll on the weekend for a bit of warmth and dryness.

Saturday seems to be the only decent day we get every week. Other days its constant showers. I guess its better than Tuesday being the only nice day.
Since parkrun returned after Covid I have run it many Saturdays and it's yet to rain. If it was on Wednesday there'd probably have been only 2 or 3 dry ones.
Tomorrow looks like a repeat of today, cool, breezy and frequent showers and possible downpours and a real taste of mid autumn. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will offer a brief respite from what could be a very unsettled second half to May with showers or longer outbreaks of rain from this Monday and continuing throughout next week. Some of the models are showing a write-off situation for next week with up to 80mm of rainfall in some places between Monday and Friday. Next week could well be the wettest week since February with daily deluges possible and possibly localised flooding.
Make the most of Friday-Sunday, a weekend where the lawnmowers will be out in force.

Not looking as wet as the models were showing yesterday but still a fairly wet and unsettled week to come. Generally 20 to 60mm across the country. Each run will be different and the reality may be less than this or wetter. At least next week will be mild.
Those rainfall totals in the east spell SE-E winds and cold onshore breezes, yuck is all I can say. Decent enough here today, not quite as sunny but still fair and dry so far.
huge swings from the 0z to 6z in terms of rainfall, looking considerably drier in the east on this run but still overall a wet week to come from Monday.
The latest run also sees the UK mainland losing out on the heat for next week.
Next Wednesday is looking particularly cold and wet with some western areas remaining in single digits under rainfall.
The 'warm' spell which looked on course just a few days ago is now busted open as bad as the cold Christmas 2021 which got wiped out by the Atlantic.
We could be on the cusp of setting up a fairly big pattern change to something much wetter and potentially colder from next week.
Polar vortex or no polar vortex, the Atlantic still spoils everything. Let’s hope it quietens down during the peak summer months and the Azores high comes up over us.
I hope your right. Sometimes May can be a good indicator for the summer, so it's very hard to know how this summer will pan out, will we see an improving situation for June and July or could we be at the end of the warmer than average temperature anomolies which have persisted for almost a year.
Having said that last May was not a good indicator for June and July which were very warm and mostly settled.
Could we be in for a cool and unsettled summer, I hope not. Next week looks nailed to be an unsettled week with average temperatures or slightly below during rainfall. Beyond next week holds alot of uncertainty. The models are certaintly looking less interested day by day in bringing us a sustained area of high pressure.
Our best hopes for some warm and settled weather probably will be June or July. August of course will probably be typical of Augusts over the past decade.

It's very typical early to mid May weather. Temps around average between night and day.
Some Mays you can have summery weather at this stage, 21-24c. But what we have is more common.

It was meant to hit 19 degrees today and so far it's so cold + windy out there it would cut you in 3 never mind in 2.
There are also big dark clouds in sky so it will probably lash rain aswell.
Working outside and it's baltic. I've just added another layer of clothing and a wooly hat.

On plus side I've never walked back so fast in my life so I've used up enough calories to have a few biscuits with a nice cup of tea🤣
