Unionist vote was split, non Unionist vote was split, that's how party democracy works. An extraordinary day for Sinn Fein by any yardstick, and their vote management across candidates was pretty incredible, although they left a seat behind them in South Down which will disappoint them
I’m not sure where you’re at but they tried it. It failed
Its not that simple
DUP votes went to TUV
UUP votes went to Alliance
SDLP votes went to SF
Only one top office beneficiary of that,(albeit an equal power top office with the deputy FM)
Sinn Féin
No Unionist we’re encouraged every unionist on your ballot 1-4
???
They didn't try it at all tbh
They will next time
Never under estimate the sting of a dying wasp
Yes they did try it. I’m watching every Wednesday and Friday at their rallies up here.
Ohhh aye that’s not galvanising
sinn fein seem to be triumphalist, but despite unionists in tatters, they only go ONE percent more than the last election.
Considering the natural "nationalist" population of voting age has gone up more than that, this in reality is a failure for sinn fein and they are only attaining new seats because the unionist are disorganised to a ridiculous level.
For this to be a success for sinn fein they would have needed at least a 4-5% vote increase.
Looks like new voters and those pissed off with unionists did give votes to sinn fein
Seismic changes up north today according to media commentators earlier. 66000 + fpv ahead of DUP. SDLP & UUP wipeout and Nationalist FM.
Not a bad days work I'd say.
And the tories battered in England.
Forgot about that 👍
Ah here, this smacks of total desperation. I have seen very little evidence of triumphalism, you might stick up examples, it is only natural for them to be deighted with a result like that but triumphalism. Sinn Fein didn't get ONE percent more than the last election, they got 11.6582% (I hope my sums are correct) more than the last election, so I don't see how anybody could paint that as failure, seriously. Going by your own sums this would have to be considered a 'success'
It’s gonna be a change that nobody wanted or expected 2 years ago.
I don't know where you heard that because it was actually remarked on Radio Ulster earlier that there was a distinct lack of tricolours and yahoos and yahooing in the count centres today in comparison to other years. It almost appeared orchestrated was the remark made.
I'd disagree that there's triumphalism
But as I said above votes have been loaned and moved all over the shop
Unionists shouldn't be underestimated as they have a majority
My guess is 15 to 20 years and thats gone
Have you listened to them? I live up here. (Voted alliance and sdlp)
And the first words out of ms mc Donald's mouth is not about the cost of living crisis, or poverty levels or hospital waiting lists, or any number of social issues.
No, the first words out of her mouth are about a border poll.
Would you ever eff off.
Huge numbers are at crisis poverty levels here and this haughty b1tch can only mouth off about a border poll - maybe she hasn't realized that 71% of people did not vote for sinn fein.
Been listening all day and what heard was she wanted to get into govt up there and get the €300,000,000 back which is still owed to the NI people. Perhaps your tears are clouding your senses today.
As do I live up here. North belfast to be exact. You’re talking nonsense
You'd want to listen to her interview again, and this time with both ears
Well a good day for SF vote wise at least, a hard stomach for unionists.
If you want to talk about political progress in the North then the democratic process coming to the day that a nationalist party can become the largest party in Northern Irish politics is some change from the gerrymandering that took place and led to the troubles.
Fair play to SF on their victory and the progress of the democratic process in Northern Ireland I say.
Dreadful day for unionists. But not a great day for sinn fein. Their vote went from 28% in 2017 to 29% in 2022.
That's poor considering the appalling state of the DUP.
Alliance were the winners as more and more people are sick and tired of the nationalist/unionist argument and frankly don't give a damn about the border
You might have missed the earlier post, Sinn Fein increased their vote by 11.6582% from the 2017 election to the 2022 election, by any yardstick that isn't 'poor'
Is that a % increase in numbers who voted for them? (Which really isn't a great benchmark as its more to do with voter turnout and population growth). SF have done very well up north, it will be interesting to see how they can get stormont to sit again now they have the mandate to rule and if cost of living or a border poll goes top of their agenda. A good test would be finding common ground with AP.
I live up north too and that’s complete BS
Yea it's a % increase in numbers which I'd argue is a good reflection of where things are at. Sinn Fein now have a quarter of a million voters supporting them which is an extraordinary figure. Alliance increased their vote by over 60% from 2017 which is another extraordinary figure and which hopefully bodes well for the future of Northern Ireland. By contrast, the DUP lost over 18% (over 41k votes) of their vote from 2017, a lot of it went to the TUV unfortunately but their result is a reflection of their abject performance and the campaign they ran
Vote share based on percentage points is the common way of assesssing performance for a reason. The number of votes cast increased by 7.5% so just holding steady at your share of the vote would mean a 7.5% increase in FPVs received
Using the logic displayed by some posters here you’d have people trying to portray TUV as having increased their vote by 220% - when the reality is that they’ve only increased from 7th largest to 6th largest party.
Right then, % share increase is the metric that matters, the numbers voting affects your number too much (of course it's the number trump fanatics used ad nauseum despite the loss).
It was a good election for SF, but they'll be disappointed at that 1% gain after the DUP did everything it could to self destruct. It could also indicate the high water mark of SF support in the North and indicate the AP as being the next big power there.
Alliance is mainly eating into the unionist pool
Thats a problem (now) for united Irelanders as in a border poll they will still vote no
Population dynamics make a border poll a no brainer in 15 or 20 years I think
Then we are talking an island nation of 10 million in the EU
As per the United Germany example, the EU will pay for this (as will the UK)
All good
Still coalition government's though, with SF in some of them and still with a housing problem probably, health service issues etc but a great country nonetheless
No,this is not sarcasm
SF snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Why are they pushing for a border poll the minute the election is done, when they have stayed quiet about it for the past 4 weeks?
Because the vast majority of people in NI don't give a $hit about a border poll and will vote no anyway, they want their elected representatives to sort out the mess that is in NI.
They haven't gone away you know.
