First 2.5 week cost findings

First 2.5 weeks done in the ID4 and interesting stats.

Total distance covered: 2,600km

Total units: 478 kWh (369 Kwh @home, 89 kwH @Ecars, 20kwh @ionity)

Total cost for 2,600km = €85

Time waiting for public charger: Nil

Total Charge time @ public charger: 2 hours (had lunch , got coffee etc, so no time wasn't wasted)

Old Car: 2006 VW Touran 11.2 L/100 Km ,fuel costs f2 2600 km= €553.28

so a saving of €468 on fuel

less PCP €250

*actual saving = €218 in 2.5 weeks

*just keeping it to fuel and repayments
*additional saving €460 Motor tax annually, €150 on insurance, €60 NCT, upto €500 on tolls.

so great costs saving, but also journeys are so pleasant, the drive is so smooth, with lots of tech and the kids really enjoy the space

Sorry new Boards did something funky to my original post - it looked like it was duplicate.

Here's a rough summary. I enjoyed seeing another user's stats and wanted to share mine in case it could prove useful to someone considering BEV. I'll keep it shorter because I can remember everything I typed last time.

New car: Tesla Model 3 SR+/LFP

Distance travelled (April): 3,600 KM
Total Units: 553 kWh (298 Ionity, 95 ESB, 50 Tesla, 110 Work - no home charger yet)
Total cost fuel for 3,600km: €150
Time queueing for public charger: 15 mins (thanks to CityNorth being down to one stall working)
Time charging at public charger: 4-4.5 hours (although four 30-min stops were on road trips, which would have been a comfort break nyway)

Old car: 2018 Toyota Auris 1.8 - 5.2L/100KM: €350 for petrol for the same distance.

On fuel costs alone this is a €200 saving.

Other factors:

I didn't have loan / PCP for Auris, but do for the M3. With this included, I'm spending about €25-50 more for the month (depending on the petrol price used for calculations)
Motor Tax and Insurance are lower for the M3 (annual expense rather than monthly)
Tolls are half-price

10k. I got the 52 Kwh model. The PCP is €250 not 500

Well savings increase by mileage, and presumably you won't be doing 1000km every week

Still, pretty good that the PCP cost was lower than the savings, fly's in the face of the whole "EVs are too expensive argument"

Yes, we wouldn’t normally do that distance. ( maybe because fuel was to expensive 😅😅) but we may do that distance in a month as opposed to 2.5 weeks.

deffo flies in the face of everyone saying they are to dear. I guess some people think they are too dear tyat they don’t bother looking into them. I think I’ve converted some friends over. I guess owning EV is like being part of a pyramid scheme

Are they savings though? Yes the fuel is cheaper but you are omitting the deposit you paid as well as the final balloon payment that will be due so while you are saving in fuel vs the petrol the EV will be more expensive overall.

Comparisons of a new ev vs an old ice are irrelevantv really because the purchase price negates any savings. You should be working out uour savings against a new ice car not your old car.

Yes they are savings. As I needed to replace my car anyway. ICE cars are not free, they still need to be purchased to

the ID4 and the Tucson are the top selling cars, the cheapest Tucson was 3k more expensive than my ID4 . I image the ID4 will have better resale

but even against my car of car the savings are still there

as for the ballon payment I intend to just change it at the end.

if I walked away after three years , I’d still be up as the repayments, electricity and running costs are still less than what my fuel was.

you could offset the savings and what depreciation an ICE has against the deposit.

ill have to wait three years and see

In your post though you are comparing your savings & mentioned your old touran in the comparison so the savings you posted are meaningless.

I'm not saying you won't be saving & if you are changing anyway than the electric does make sense, just that you need to compare like for like & compare your savings against the ice car you'd be buying. The savings will may be even higher because loans will cancel out.

I don't know if the Tuscan is the comparable model to the ID4 or not.

Sorry I see you say €10k, and monthly pcp of €250. That seems incredible value on such an expensive car.

Just had a quick look on circa €50k Id4 there looking for 15k deposit and over €500 pm. Its a FROM price. That's in a VW dealer in Donegal

Sounds like you're gonna be doing 35,000-40,000km a year though. You'll be penalised heavily at the end of the 3 year pcp if that's the case.

Unless you buy it outright then of course.

I won’t be doing that mileage. It’ll calm down in the autumn and winter. We had Easter and a bank holiday in that period.

It’s the smaller battery. Which is not available to order at the moment. But I did shop around and got a great deal, which saved a couple of K on other dealers . @hogan86 pointed me to the best dealer.

OP got a variant which was around 35k. I think it was called City and not available at the moment.

I think the comparison makes sense as it speaks only about outgoings from his own pocket. There is no discussion here about residual values.To be able to pay the monthly rent and fuel cheaply than just the fuel it is something. I prefer a different model where I get to use the car as long as possible but that's just me.

After a generous scrappage deal I got if for 32k.

The ROTR was €35,436, many dealers where adding things on to that price

Well Ted, you got me there fairplay. Definitely was a good move for you.

Cheapest new Golf is now €30k which is only slightly cheaper than what you paid for a far bigger fully electric car.

I did a cost comparison about 5 years ago of the total cost of ownership between my brand new Ioniq EV and the last car I had before then (a worthless banger) and the Ioniq cost less. Very few people believed my figures, but then most people looked at me like I had 2 heads when I told them I bought an electric car 😂

The figures actually turned out to be much better than I had presented as the depreciation on the Ioniq was far less. I think I spent about €30 in the first year or two on fuel too as all public charging was free back then and I had free unlimited electricity at home (for the first year thanks to Just Energy - an American utility provider who has long since left the market here). My total maintenance over 3 years was €163 for 2 tyres and if I had known I would be selling the car soon afterwards, I wouldn't have bothered with them

All my other EVs since then have actually made me money, not cost me any. Total cost of ownership, so including insurance, tax, tolls, maintenance, depreciation, fuel, everything.
