Anyone know what this is?

Pulling back brambles and scraping ground and found this, approx 6 feet by 3. Thought was an old tank but lifted the lid and it's only about 1.5feet deep with a mechanism in it.

Thinking some sort of weighing scales but don't see how get the weight as only 4 little holes on each corner, possibly for lifting lid? And there was no sign of how you'd keep an animal on it, and its away from the old sheds. And why underground rather than a platform one or just at the mart ?

There's been no work done on this farm since the 1940s so it's definitely older than that.

Is it some sort of lifting mechanism. Maybe.place what you wanted lifted on top a dso.e winding to lift it to s height so you could transfer the load onto a truck trailer

What would have been farmer in the locality previously.

Good idea but no cogs to wind it up and the cover weighs an awful lot, had to use digger to lift it.

We've one here too, it's a scales, previous owners here used to sell gravel and there's a ridge in ours to steady a horses cart, the old carts were balance in that all the weight was on the wheels so could be weighed just by putting the wheels on the weghbridge....ours is in bits but we painted it up and put it back down on the ground anyway.

Yea, it would've been nice to restore that one too but it was all missing too, even the scales I copped in a scrapyard only a few years ago and stuck it there.

I reckoned when Pooley name was on it it belonged to something similar. It's very like the one in the video

Local town of Arva has such a scales outside the old Market House.

The actual "clock face" was inside the building.
