I see the competition authority are investigating the Tesco takeover of Joyces
I find that deeply amusing as Athenry had zero competition until now on account of Joyces and the authority was mute ?
Born in Newtownsymth has a sign saying relocation sale so I can only assume it's closing that location
That kicked off last year, shortly after the announcement and in fairness its fully expected.
It was discussed in another thread and I said I believed the biggest stumbling block could be the Oranmore Joyces. Other than that I wouldn't foresee any issues
That was a preliminary investigation which they've now decided will require a full investigation of the proposed takeover.
I wouldn't expect anything less given the potential negative impacts to consumers in the event of a loss of competition. Its a good thing imho
Why was this not a problem when Joyce had a retail monopoly in Athenry?
Was the Athenry monopoly achieved through buying up others stores / companies, or, opening up other stores? (I genuinely don't know).
There's a difference when it comes to competition between Tesco buying up shops versus a relatively small, regional player doing the same.
They opened a women’s store in the old Burger King store in the Eyre Sq Centre, not a lot of choice left in Newtownsmyth store today.
His monopoly there absolutely was a problem for the locals, as has been seen by the large support for the many attempts by Aldi and Lidl to open stores there.
However, as mentioned, his monopoly did not come from acquisition so would not have been open for investigation in that sense
Some say that complete strangers to Mr Joyce opposed any development of other retailers in Athenry?
I've no idea myself but it was quite nice of them to do so ,hope he sent them a Christmas card at least

Seven storey student complex planned on Westside Shopping Centre carpark by Elkstone Real Estate. The proposal will take up Approx 100 car park spaces.
Its needed but I wonder will they get away with 7 stories there, it seems quite tall based on its surroundings
This will be some change for that area. I presume the commerical units to the North of the Site that would be impacted by 7 story's - but this is the Developer of the proposal?
Very interesting. I can't see them getting permission for 7 stories, but they likely know that already and expect to get the ok for 5 or 6, so better to apply for more.
There should be opportunity in that development to have more than just a coffee shop on the ground floor. IMHO it would be a loss if they didn't set up the majority of the ground floor for commercial/retail of some sort
You wouldn't know, with the new building going on in Circular Road and in Gael Carrig there seems to be high rise apartments going on, a new skyline in westside maybe?
Tend to agree + this is a low lying area of the West side of the City + is on a primary bus corridor for the City + very close to NUIG/UOG/UGH.
The Letteragh Road NOW has a big 5 story apt blocks on it and thats on the edge of housing development.
A lot of the commercial area around this area is wasted really. Should really have more mixed Development here. Former Higgins shop + the existing site across the road from this Development are other prime areas for redevelopment for housing.

Nope, they've been closed since some time in around late March. No posts on social media etc. Had heard rumours they were moving to a bigger unit but that doesn't tie in with what's currently happening.
