Correct. De Gaulle was snippy that the UK had a monopoly on the individual who was Deputy Supreme Allied Commander. So he withdrew from the unified command and had France under sovereign command but within NATO in all other respects.
It was basically France pretending it was a peer power of the US in the alliance and everyone just went along with it.
Very French, and quite popular within a country coming to terms with it's empire disintegrating and in particular after the sting of losing Algeria.
+1
The EU is one of the greatest political achievements in modern history. An era of relative prosperity, peace and security in europe. It is serving it's purpose
If you want a laugh go and take a look at the Astrazenica thread from early last year. Dyr and brickster69 were posting the exact same type of shite in there, 90% of it complete bollocks. It's not about Russia, it's not about Ukraine and it's certainly not about being right. It's just **** the EU, Germany, France etc... anything that makes them look bad is worth posting.
Acting as they always have? I don’t see any maginot line or breakthrough at sedan or fall of Paris or Vichy France. France and Germany historically acting as they always have was war at least every 30-40 years. The EU has confined all that to the dustbin of History.
The EU is far from perfect but its accomplishments and its benefit far out weigh its problems IMHO. Plus over time we can continue to work to improve the EU. Given all that it is easy to see why Ukraine wants to join the EU.
Do you have anything actual rebuke to any of the points posted?
Nope, just personal abuse. No suprise lol
You may not have noticed but the peace Europe enjoyed from WW2 to the fall of the Soviet Union was the result of the presence of Uncle Sam and his massive stockpile of instant sunshine pointing at Russia, not the EU 😂 . You may also have noticed that wars of agression between nations to change borders are pretty much a thing of the past too (except with Russia of course), not much for the EU to take credit for there. I suppose you could boast that Germany has not tried to make **** of Europe via war since but thats a result of them deciding to retire from that game to gain readmission to the human race, again, thank the Yanks for that.
But now, with the stabilisers off and daddy America occupied elsewhere, what has the EU, aka France and Germany, managed to do? Put Russian tanks back on Europes lawn. Dustbin of History, you say? They must have recycled it 😂
Whatever, but it has to be acknowledged that these 'brexiteer types' have put their military equipment where their mouths are. Unlike a vacillating, limp wristed EU.
Breakdown of the latest military package being sent by the US to include howitzers and helicopters:
You were in here 9 days ago calling the Germans and French "krauts and frogs", so no, I'm not going to try and debate with that standard of shite posting.
Unfortunately, human memory is terribly short, and we quickly forget just how terrible war is when peace and prosperity is all is known. It leads to an awful lot of complacency and nitpicky sh*te talk over things which completely pale into insignificance in comparison to the need to maintain peace. Russia and China would absolutely love the EU and NATO to break up because they are the very institutions checking their imperial ambitions and preventing Germany and France warring with each other. The west needs these institutions to maintain itself more than ever, because the grim authoritarian alternatives look absolutely horrible.
France did not withdraw from NATO in 1966. This is easily verifiable stuff
And it could be argued that the reason they're doing so is precisely because of Brexit: they find themselves excluded from European politics and the only way to get involved is to provide substantial military aid unilaterally. Also conveniently overshadows Johnson and the Tories domestic woes.
Which is all aside from the fact plenty of EU nations (and the EU itself from its own budget) have also provided military aid to Ukraine. Could certainly do more absolutely; but not sure "vacillating, limp wristed" characterises the response adequately... especially in comparison to the UK.
Also speaking of heavier weapons it seems Chechia is once again punching far above its weight by sending some 20+ howitzers and 20+ MLRS systems:
300 switchblades awsome
In London and the capitals of the EU, Brexit is well in rear mirror and certainly way down the priority list of political leaders.
Have you a notion, or even a smidgeon of a notion, of the stuff that the EU is providing! Was a convoy yes a convoy, of munitions leaving Belgium 3 weeks ago not large enough for you to notice.
Better late than never. The lads on boards were saying Putin is bluffing and Biden & Boris were scaremongering about a war starting. Three months ago !
And if the rumours are to be believed: 300 Switchblade Systems actually means 3,000 actual drones.
I do quite enjoy the idea of the Russians hiding in their little holes in the ground being terrified of every slight buzzing sound in case its a Switchblade 300 diving into their trench...
Multiple sources are saying the Moscow has been hit by a Neptune missile.
Will you go away out of that. Why would Ireland be of interest to Russia? Makes no sense at all.
NATO looks after the military side, Eu covers the day to day economic and social and environmental issues. It has far more influence on the outlook and direction of European countries than NATO. Judge people by their actions not their words. Judge the Ukrainians by their actions if you want to know the truth. It is pretty obvious what they think of the EU. They are fighting a terrible conflict for a better future in the EU. There is no question of that.
Most of us ( or our parents at least) only had to put a tick on a ballot paper for the same privilege.
Sweden should send some archer rapid firing artillery systems
Alternatively it could mean 30 launch systems as each comes with 10 drones
I wouldn't take those sources at their word.
I would wait for independent sources or a video.
Lol if true. Russian warship told to go fcuk itself, got fcuked.
@gandalf
Multiple sources are saying the Moscow "Moskva" has been hit by a Neptune missile.
Corrected that for you?
Ukraine has hit russian missile cruiser "Moskva" in the Black Sea. The cruiser is the one that was told to go **** itself by the Snake Island defenders
Yeah first time I scan read that tweet I saw Neptune Missile hits Moscow. The 'the' makes all the difference!
It's also the flagship of the Black Sea fleet so if that can't stop itself from being hit with neptunes, all their ships are vulnerable
The reality is that if and when Mariupol falls, Russias resupply line via the Crimean bridge will make their Navy less important
"And it could be argued that the reason they're doing so is precisely because of Brexit: they find themselves excluded from European politics and the only way to get involved is to provide substantial military aid..."
More probable is that they're simply providing military aid.
That's why I don't understand why the Ukrainians haven't fired something at the bridge. It's an obvious target and a massively symbolic one.
