It also states that any parliamentary vote is likely to require a 75% majority.

Russia has invaded a European country. Even if Ukraine is a quagmire for Putin, this will never stop as long as he's in power. Pretty strong reasons to join NATO.

I think I understand it. Russia has started a war of conquest and (possibly) a genocide on a neighbour, for nothing other than the leadership's own desires, fears, pure greed etc.. The fact that it hasn't gone very well for them so far, doesn't really take away from that and they've inflicted huge damage on Ukraine. For all the Russia seems to be weaker than thought, militaries of alot of countries around the EU that they might hope to get some support from in a crisis (given they are not in NATO) are not in a wonderful state either (esp. Germany's). With best will in the world, Finland and Sweden are both small countries with a combined population maybe 1/10 to 1/8 or so of Russia's. We all hope the sanctions will work to stop Russia buidling up its military again and threatening others, but that is not certain over the long term (alot will depend on what China does). Putin could be in power another decade or even 2, God help us all.
I would have thought putting a Z on your car would be seen as some sort of incitement to hatred or some other racially motivated crime- I don’t know my Irish racial related laws I’m afraid but there’s definitely something there that would cover that action of the convoy.

Meh, I'm pretty sure the Fins will welcome them with open artillery strikes into the swamps of eastern Finland. They can complain all they want but any attempt at moving into Finland would be pissing in the wind considering how badly maintained the Russian equipment is. Whatever about the thaw in Ukraine slowing them down, swampland followed by tundra, hills and forest and the largest artillery in Europe and a well oiled military would decimate the Russians.

Not so the case in Ireland where, using a recent example, elected officials can sue a broadcaster for defamation. No such thing in the US. Libel and slander maybe, but political figures or public figures pretty much can't sue for those.

We do have incitement to hatred laws - putting a Z on your car right now in the manner that the Russian mechanic did, is definitely an act of racial hatred against Ukrainians in this country at the very least- apparently there’s another “Russian Rally” on the 7th May- I reckon that this will be much bigger and also we’re going to see a lot more Z this time - it’s quite likely the Gardai might intervene next time as this could be a clear act of racially motivated aggression
