The problem is they were always going to be problems with Russia and sanctions based off how far the Kremlin has reach inside European countries and businesses , the moment they invaded Russian oil , gas, Money should have been stopped not targeted at a small number of individuals ,but the whole of Russia ,that should have included naval blockades to Stop them from leaving Russian waters .

They put 10 million (likely more) through the Gulags over a couple of decades, WWII happened in the middle of that period. They abduct children and send them for adoption in Siberia. They levelled Grozny. They had a big part in levelling Aleppo (which somehow the Brits get blamed for, see that piece of **** convicted today of killing the MP). Razing cities for them is a legitimate tactic. Killing old women on their doorstep is a legitimate tactic. Rape is pretty much a legitimate tactic. The Ukrainians know all of this, the Poles, Latvians, Lithuanians, Finns, all their neighbours are well. While some who were on the fence and were more Ukrainian, yeah they'll go to Ukraine. But in the end the "proper" Russians will go along with whatever the Czar says because it's all NATO's fault.

People criticise the Austrian chancellor for meeting Putin today but I think instead we should focus on his words after a very short meeting: he's not optimistic about peace and Russia are preparing for a huge offensive. That's what Ukraine is facing now and it's looking grim.
But one thing baffles me about the Russian approach right now: if they want to incorporate the largely pro Russian east, why are they destroying so much of it first? Will surely alienate even pro Russian citizens and leave them with a massive rebuilding job?
